What are some things in pick up games that others do that annoy you. For me it is

Teammates who do not use a pick when you set one for them
Big man who get a rebound and just holds it and does not look up for an outlet
Players who drive to the basket shoot and call a foul after they shot the ball 3 seconds later
Teammates who yell shoot when you are open. Maybe I do not want to shoot because I am out of my range or I am looking for a better shot for me or a teammate
Good or Great Shooters who think just because they can shoot the ball that means they are some great basketball player. There is more to being great at basketball then shooting.

I'm posting from Korea. People play ball here, but pickup is different.

1. No one wants to play full-court
2. Any sort of touching is a foul.
3. When they try to play no 2's rule (no 3's).
4. When one player or two players out of 8 suck. (4 on 4)
5. When one player or two players out of 8 don't try hard. (4 on 4)
6. When you win, and then don't retain the court (it's a Korean be nice let everyone play thing..not that bad).
7. When people get mad playing ball. It should be fun.
8. When people are smelly.
9. When people always wear completely wrong clothes, i.e jeans, or a full track suit in summer.

I play in England...

-Everyone runs 2-3 zone. Some german guys came to my gym last week and INSISTED on running a 3-2... I have no idea.
- You always inbound - you never check the ball.
- If you shoot from halfcourt when at least 2 of your players are behind mid-court, you get 1 point for shooting and 9 points if it goes in.
- Im jk about the last one.

2-3 zone in pickup is ridiculous in my American playing.
As for Korean ball, I think the everyone being nice court-change rule and the players in jeans/track suits is pretty funny.

How about oc players throwing bows and shoulders who think their wildness is somehow 1.good/a skill 2.within the rules of basketball.

I hate those players who won't stop asking for the ball and keeps telling what people need to do during the game. I mean it is fine with me to follow what they are suggesting but if you keep turning the ball over or you can't drive for shit or shoot the ball then you better shut up and let someone else run the plays.

Guys who shoot 3's every time they get the ball.

Guys who don't play defense then leak (cherry pick).

Guys who call fouls (we play defender calls the foul) that do not impact the game i.e. foul called on a completed pass or on a drive when the handler gets by someone.

When somehow your tallest player can't seem to get a rebound from a guy who's WAY shorter than him. (5'6 out rebounds a 6'4 9 out of 10)

Boxing out and get accused for an elbow (when clearly, I never really did raised my elbow higher than my chest or at his head level). Almost got into a fight with him :facepalm

Players who don't pass to you when you're clearly wide open underneath the rim. Sometimes, taking over 5 seconds before doing so.

Players who DON'T PASS AT ALL.

No defense, only offense players.

Players that just always yell a foul whenever he drives in hard even if everyone avoids contact with that guy.

Players who drive in to the lane and calls a foul the minute they're breathed on. Typically when their layup doesn't go in.

Players who you destroy when they're on the other team, and then for some reason when you're mixing the team up, they become your team mates, they're constantly telling you what to do...What is up with that?? As in, "you need to cut your guy off", "box out", "play better man"!!!

Team mates who tell you to shoot, damn man, I'll shoot when I'm going to shoot. I don't mean the odd time to encourage someone who doesn't take the open shot, I mean every time I get the ball, they're going shoot that!

I have to admit I am a no defence, cherry picker player....I often let my guy go by to the left and then try the reach around...:D :D

-When a guy is yelling/complaining about everyone else's performance, while he's shooting 0/14 with 0 rebounds.

-When people care too much about winning a pickup game.

-When people constantly foul since nobody gets to shoot free throws in pickup games or constantly push off on screens and drives to the hoop.

-When people throw lazy passes when you're heavily covered
-When people call fouls because they get blocked or stripped and don't want to look stupid
-When people intentionally try to add points or subtract points from the other team thinking no one will notice.

People that call for touch fouls whilst elbowing you in the throat for a post up whilst on the other end full over the back foul when boxing out.

The bigger/heavy player thinking its okay to commit a offensive foul because they "overpower" the smaller guys.

on top of my head
-people who never ever pass.I played in my team that for 3 matches gave like 5 passes i mean wtf
-people that ask for offensive foul
-people that act mad, shout and cursed like you killed them just cause you make a strong physical contact foul.not something that you can get injured or dirty foul just strong. If you don t want defence to get physical then go play badminton
-people who never ever play defence ( even if they are good offensive players )
-old guys that think they are still 25 years old and talking trash but can t do anything.I love it when i play with trash talkers it gets me pumped up but they got to back up their talk
-people that try to do all that and1 mixtape but fail most of the times

I hate playing with the guys who have watched nothing but And1 Streetball so their whole mentality is to just do crossovers and other shit, usually while carrying, traveling or double dribbling.

I hate the guys who are really good at shooting so they think they can take EVERY shot they want to, even while being covered heavily by a defender.

The guys who start screaming and oohing and awing over a blocked shot or a basic dunk annoy me, too.

Quick list of other annoyances:
- Guys who try to coach their teammates in a ****ing pick-up game. Wtf? We're not playing organized b-ball. Gtfo here with that b.s.
- Guys who don't use screens or picks.
- Guys who try to call plays they learned in high school or wherever as though we've been practicing them & know the maneuvers perfectly, and then get pissed when the play doesn't get executed properly.
- Guys who don't pass.
- Guys who can't play defense at all, so they foul every chance they get.
- Guys who can't tell the difference between a reach & a clean a steal.

The guy that plays point guard just because he wants to have the ball all the time so he can take shots. He never passes and is usually of the African American demographic. He is also very vocal, takes(and misses) long two pointers often, and thinks hes way better than he actually is. teams with this guy also have a 80% chance of losing.

Well he only annoys me when hes on my team, I love playing against those guys.

There are some guys that I play with that always want to play PG and can not handle any type of pressure. One guys always wants the in-bound but if the defense closes in he always picks the ball up. I usually try to pick him up at our foul line then take off and double the next pass away so he ends up standing with the ball on the wrong end of the court by himself lol

It's already been mentioned, but dudes who don't pass the rock...ESPECIALLY if they suck.

And guys who are TOO aggressive and don't really play the sport. Maybe they play football or something and think tackling you when you drive to the hoop is legal.

When you are behind the 3 point line without the ball and your man is guarding you close. I am not even near the basket why are you crowding me in a pickup game.

Players who you are guarding and getting physical so they start calling fouls more often and complaining that you are getting physical with them.

Having played my days on vars and many streetball games not using a pick is actually a good idea since the defender might see it coming and think you may use it. Just pretend your going to use it and hit em with the quick cross and just get to the rim.

When you give a nice no look pass(or regular pass) to your teammate under the rim and he misses a wide open lay up.

dudes that grab your shirt or jersey on defense, gtfo me.

dudes who basket hang.

dudes who only play defense only when their man has the ball.

dudes who are too lazy to go for the rebound.

dudes who instead of trying to grab the rebound, slap the sh1t out of the ball in a random direction.

Things that annoy me:

1. Dudes who lie and cheat about a foul call, out of bounds, or on the score....
2. Dudes who get mad if the call did not go their way. So now they are playing extra physical.

3. Dudes who takes 10 shots, makes only 3 of them. But the minute you take one (1) shot and miss, folks are yelling at you for missing....one shot; your only FG attempt the whole game.

4. The one dude that thinks he is Isiah Thomas, dribbling all over the place, ignoring screens and people flashing and cutting.

5. The dude who throws the ball to you at 100 mph and you are 2 feet from each other. Then he yells at you for dropping the ball. :facepalm

6. Players who don't yell when a screen is coming. But will yell at you for getting beat by your man.

05-22-2013, 10:19 PM
People who try to cheat the score definitely pi$$ me off.

Also people who lie that their shot was from 3 when the whole time their feet were inside the arc. There is never any refs or unbiased 3rd party to confirm if it was a 3. They are adamant and of course you have to take their word for it.

From playing with french ppl:

They use soccer rules so they don't know that there is such thing as 3 second violations. They camp in the key and I call them out on it and they think I'm lying. They seriously don't believe there is such thing.

When they are close to the sidelines or baseline, their feet are outside but as long as the ball is still bounced inside it's not out. A soccer thing yet again. I call them out on it and they think I am cheating.

the dude that is really awkward, probably plays rugby or hockey or something, that looks like an injury waiting to happen everytime he plays.

I see these guys all the time at my gym, stepping peoples feet, stepping under dudes when they shoot, banging knee on knee with people all the time. smdh

Also that guy who gets the ball and for some reason goes to the corner and gets trapped every time. That shit bothers me so bad.

And the guy who always posts up but is completely useless. Turns it over if he passes and never makes a shot. Also will be standing in your way everytime you want to drive.

And lastly the guy whos getting beat everytime off the dribble but refuses to switch. "i got this, dont worry" is usually what he says. :lol

When your player rebounds and puts back the ball for a score and your teammates yell at you for letting your man score but they are just standing under the rim watching the ball. I am supposed to rebound for the whole team?

When you are running back on defense for a fast break and none of your teammates are hustling back.

When you are running back on defense for a fast break and none of your teammates are hustling back. That's a big one. Nothing squashes a fun chasedown block like watching another offensive player stumble upon the rebound for an easy score because none of your teammates chose to run back.

On the flip side, I am also frustrated by teammates who don't run the floor on offense. I'm not a fan of snagging a defensive rebound and taking off downcourt with a purpose, only to realize none of my teammates are running with me.

And this is why I despise playing full court. Halfcourt is way better because it forces players to go up against set d.Ah, I am the complete opposite. Even with my full court pet peeves, running half court all the time vanquishes my soul. I can't live just playing half court all the time, for it's missing so many aspects of the game I love.

I need to get out and run. More times than not it tends to work out. If other people aren't willing to run, then I look like LeBron James. More likely, at least most of the players on the floor are willing to give an effort and it turns into a great and competitive way to exercise and have fun. But during those doldrums when there's either not enough people to run full or they're not willing to... a piece of me dies inside.

If you play with people who hustle back on D it wouldn't be a problem.

I don't like half court because if you make a stupid pass or dribble too much and turn it over, you have time to set up your D because the other team has to clear. If it's full court, it's a fast break dunk/layup. With that in mind, you actually have to play smarter in order to avoid giving up easy baskets.

It's not going to matter with good 3 point shooters. I literally had no choice one in 3v3 sometimes because another guy kept making them on the other team. We played like 5 half court games and must have drained 25 threes each in each others eye. Boring as shit and felt like a damn shoot around but I wasn't about to let that guy think that he was the only one that could shoot lol.

- People who hard foul. Seriously its a fvcking pick up game I have other sports I play and cant risk hurting myself. That's a big one for me. And I'm not referring to guys who make a play and just want to prevent a bucket with a solid hack. I'm speaking of those whose fouls would be considered flagrant or intentional in real games. I'm also not fond of bear hugs or wrap ups.

And to be clear, my issue with these plays doesn't have to do with me despising contact or something. It's just, streetball is merely streetball - I'm playing for fun and it's real life. I can't really afford to have people undercutting me or pushing me from behind on dunk attempts. If there was something at stake, I could better understand it. But with my terrible health insurance, I literally cannot afford to have folks taking me out on purpose during random pickups.

This is by far the worst. When I see a guy we picked up wearing Kobes, I always groan. I know what to expect :lol. 13 missed threes and really dumb shot selection.

Calling for a pass when your teammate is in the motion of shooting. I just don't get the knowledge behind that. Go for the rebound. People who don't have a basic grasp of spacing/angles. Ie if I'm posting on the left block(my go to move) and you go post it the middle of the paint 3 feet from me. There's nowhere for me to go now(and I don't mean people who are cutting to that area trying to get a layup, I love to pass out of the post, I mean people who stand there like they are posting too), guys who refuse to cut when it's basic to the game. Ie you throw an entry pass and you aren't a shooter, cut through and I'll find you if you are open on the cut or you'll clear space. Guys who try to throw a post entry pass from taking it out when the angle is so much easier when someone you give it to someone on the wing.

Guys who spot up, never cut, but then don't shoot the ball when they get it and are wide open. If you spot up you have to take wide open looks when they are there even if you aren't a great shooter(if you know you can't shoot why are you spotting up????) guys who foul on one end but throw a fit at any contact on the other. Guys who "take" fouls anytime the game is to game point. I don't mean hey I'm trying to d up and I might foul you, I mean if you get the ball inside the three point line I'm gonna bear hug you guys. Absolutely hate that.

Guys who take traveling/carrying to ridiculous lengths. I know it's pickup but don't run 6 steps and expect me not to call it.

Jailblazers7
03-28-2015, 09:32 PM
Yeah, people who don't cut is really common in your average game. It's a really simple concept to make a pass, cut, and rotate through the offense but a lot of people have never learned that.

A pet peeve for me is when guards don't use or know how to use a pick when u set it. It's just annoying to see someone take 10 dribbles and wave me off instead of just running a simple pick and roll.

I mean hey I'll yell no layups if it's game point on d and I may foul on those points but I at least try to block the shot/play defense.Right. I don't know if the former is cheating the game, but it's close. Typically, there's a reason not to foul (free throws, fouling out). In pick-up ball, it's kind of an honor code thing.

Yet in that end-of-game "no 1's" scenario, if the defense executes as they so desire, it just creates an endless stream of bear hugs and check-ups. One option is to settle for jumpers, but I choose not to let the terrorists win.

Like I said I'm generally a post player, and that option completely negates posting. Entry pass-bear hug-ball up top. Really annoying. We thought about and seriously discussed instituting a rule that 3 intentional fouls in a row equals a point in those situations but decided against it. The thing is this goes back to what someone else said about people worrying too much about winning. I mean I'm competitive and I always want to win but not to that extent. We don't get anything for winning other than fun. And that isn't fun

- Players who put zero effort into defense but shoot every time they touch the ball

- Players who trash talk for the sake of trash talking, aka constantly being a dick because they saw one Reggie Miller documentary and thought it was cool

- Players who play off ball but don't move whatsoever, make no cuts, set no picks, just spot up and wait

- Players who emulate Brandon Knight in transition..aka blatantly ignore teammates in 3-on-1 fast breaks, put their head down and barrel into the defender. Brick the layup, call a foul

- Players who have terrible handles and footwork but insist on attacking every time. Get stripped or swatted every drive but are totally oblivious to how ineffective they are

- Players who have no skills or understanding of the game whatsoever, but compensate by playing way too hard, constantly fouling hard

Dude must've been a regular James Harden if you guys kicked him out without first trying to talk to him :lol

But for me it's less of a basketball issue and more of a mentality issue, just doesn't sit right with me when a teammate isn't engaged in half the game. Don't care if we give up easy buckets if a guy just sucks at defense..but when the guy just doesn't care it's frustrating as fvck.

Ironically I modeled my game a lot off Tony Parker, a scoring PG who sucks ass at defense :oldlol:

I play tough defense and set mean picks. I don't drive though, I'm that type of guy who spots up. I don't have handles whatsoever but I do have a wicked 3 point shot. When it's on, I have hit 2-3 in a row before (once it was 8). When it's off, I gotten better at give and gos for guys on the perimeter. Also my mid range at the corners is probably my best shot. Very rare for me to brick that shot. If I think a guy is playing dirty, I may run my mouth. Like rough defense or asking for a lot of calls that really weren't fouls. I rarely call fouls despite being hit on the hand a lot while shooting.

I also can't stand cherry pickers at all.

That guy who won't pass the ball no matter how bad he's missing.. Watched an entire team of players like that at the gym the other day. Whoever dribbled it down the court was likely to shoot it 90% of the time

Then that one guy who never moves and wonders why he never gets the ball despite a man being all over him

That's why I don't post up and that's why I'm the tall guy that shoots a lot of threes. If only there were free throws in pick up games...

-People that find any reason to get rid of the game winning point(this problem only comes from HS kids that have been raised on this soft Micky Mouse era of basketball. Foot on the line, push off, off ball "fouls", trying to call time outs on defense, over the back on put backs.

-People that can't handle a little bit of contact. Some of you that complain about people hustling and playing physical need to stfu.. I'm not gonna blatantly hit you, but I will play hard and physical. It's basketball.

not a pickup game situation but what I find annoying is when I'm on the court by myself working on my shot or some moves and then a guy comes up to me and asks if I want to play some 1on1 (which is fine) but when I tell him that I don't want to play the guy then starts shooting on the same hoop even though there's nobody playing on the other hoop on the other side of the court. Probably thinking: "I'm gonna play right here untill you change your mind" :facepalm

This doesn't really annoy me but once you play at our gym for a few years, there is a certain group of people who play within their own group. Unless you looked really ripped or you're tall, they would rarely pick you up. All of them are great players some are former college ball players. I think one time we called next and got rocked 11-2 and 11-4 in consecutive games and they were barely trying.

Also about 2 years ago, we played a team with everyone in the lineup being at least 6'3''+. We only had two dudes out of 5 who were over 6'0'', one was 6'1'' and the other was the tallest on the court at around 6'7''. This 6'4'' guy guarded me, I'm 5'9''. I got rejected like 6 times. :lol

On the fast break, I tried getting his missed shot's rebound. He missed 2-3 times in a row and easily rebounded over me lol. Talked a ton of trash too :facepalm. Didn't mind, I thought it was pretty funny myself.

Happens SO often at my gym at night if you go after 10pm. It closes a 12 on weekdays and 10 on weekends. A lot of people just play ball during that 2 hour gap period to finish off the light cardio after their workouts.

Occasionally you see a dude shooting around with a girl he was working out with, that's usually annoying if you only need one more and you know he probably won't offer to play so you end up having to do like 4 v 4 with an alternate.

I don't really celebrate but if I am in a heated game where there is a lot of trash talk and a lot of tension, I will/would/already have chest bump my teammate after hitting a Reggie Miller off the screen type game finishing 2 :pimp:

But yeah, celebrating is pointless. Usually say good game and shake everyone's hand.
