Vassilis Spanoulis, named bwin MVP of the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague

Vassilis Spanoulis of Olympiacos Piraeus was named 2012-13 bwin Euroleague MVP at the EFES Euroleague Awards Ceremony held at the City Hall in London, England on Thursday. The day before the semifinals tip-off at The O2, the best players from the Final Four teams gathered with the rest of the global basketball elite attending the 2013 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four. The attending members of the All-Euroleague First Team received their awards too, but it was Spanoulis who walked away with the biggest of them all. Spanoulis joined Nenad Krstic of CSKA Moscow, Ante Tomic of FC Barcelona Regal and Rudy Fernandez of Real Madrid, plus former Euroleague MVP Dimitris Diamantidis of Panathinaikos Athens, on the All-Euroleague First Team. Kostas Papanikolaou of Olympiacos received the Rising Star award and Bobby Brown of Montepaschi Siena was on hand to pick up the Alphonso Ford Top Scoring trophy. Tomic and Fernandez were each named to the All-Euroleague Team for the first time in their respective careers. Diamantidis claimed First Team honors for the fourth time, while Spanoulis and Krstic each received First Team trophies for the second time. Spanoulis, a two-time Final Four MVP in as many appearances in the event, was chosen as the Euroleague MVP for the first time.

Impressive as they are, statistics only tell part of the story for Spanoulis, who is the unquestionable leader of defending Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Olympiacos Piraeus. Spanoulis, 30, is the ultimate combo-guard, who can lift his team with his scoring and passing, which go hand in hand to plague opposing defenses. He ranked among the league leaders in both categories, placing fourth in scoring (14.7 ppg.) and third in assists (5.59 apg.). The inability to guard Spanoulis is well represented by the fact that he led the league in fouls drawn (5.41 per game). All told, he is ninth in the league in average performance index rating (15.4). Spanoulis got the Reds rolling early this season and was duly rewarded as bwin MVP for November. He scored at least 9 points in every game before the playoffs, and when his shooting slumped in the series against Anadolu Efes, Spanoulis took over to lead the playoffs in assists (6.6 apg.). Now in his third season with Olympiacos, Spanoulis is also a two-time Euroleague champ, and a two-time Final Four MVP. This marks his fifth All-Euroleague selection.

Vassilis Spanoulis Euroleague MVP Interview
Interviewer: You must be thrilled to win this MVP award?
Vassilis Spanoulis:
"Yes, it's nice because my team goes to the Final Four, because this is the most important. When you take something individually, everything is good, whenever your team has succeeded to make something. So that's why I have a double pleasure, because, first of all my team goes to Final Four, and we have the chance to..to make something good again."
Interviewer: What's made the difference for you this year? How have you been so consistently good, right the way through the season?
Vassilis Spanoulis:
"Working hard, being emotionally in a balance with my feelings, not so much up and not so much down, and every time trying to work harder and harder, see the mistakes and improve it every day."

Yeah but having the best season in the recent history of european basketball doesn't really mean anything...cause it's like a division 2 compared to the nba. And there's no need to be insulting: 14/5 and 15/6 are basically the same thing, especially when he actually averaged 14.7/5.6.
All I need to know about the euroleague is that greece lost to nigeria, who got beaten by a sleepwalking usa by 80 points.
Serious question - how is 14 and 5 MVP-type numbers? :biggums:

They count assist difrently in Europe so you can't look at them to see how good of a passer someone is . And in Europe it's a team game so players don't take a lot of shots even if they are best players on their teams .

The argument that Euroleague is an inferior league BECAUSE 15/6 are MVP stats makes no sense whatsoever.
Euroleague is an inferior league, we all agree on that, but I don't get the logic at all...
Firstly, Euroleague games are only 40 minutes long, and the best teams are incredibly stacked, allowing them to bench players longer.
Secondly, Europe has a more team-oriented approach to basketball. Stars aren't allowed to keep the ball for a full possession and chuck random shots all game long.
Thirdly, assists aren't counted the same way. The NBA is notoriously generous when it comes to counting assists.
Finally and most importantly... those numbers in and of themselves don't prove anything. Theoretically, they could be the result of a league being the best defensive league in the world, a league where the players are so tough and the defensive schemes so well executed that scoring is extremely difficult.

How many more does he need to catch up to Anthony Parker?
Anthony Parker = 2 Euroleague MVPs and 1 Euroleague Final Four MVP
= 3 Euroleague MVPs in total
Vassilis Spanoulis = 1 Euroleague MVP and 2 Euroleague Final Four MVPs
= 3 Euroleague MVPs in total
Dimitris Diamantidis = 1 Euroleague MVP and 2 Euroleague Final Four MVPs
= 3 Euroleague MVPs in total
But the Final Four MVP is historically more important and significant because it was the original Euroleague MVP award. So in that sense, Diamantidis and Spanoulis already edged out Parker.

This is the most important thing to consider. There's no way in hell any serious EL team which wants to maximize its scoring efficiency lets any of its players take a crapload of shots and average 30 ppg. It USED to be the case in the past up to the mid-90's, then defenses became tougher, the game became quicker, the European leagues more coach-oriented, so a deep team nowadays has no reason to play so predictably. A top Euroleague team could now miss its top player and still contend for the title, whereas in the past, losing their top star could doom them to mediocrity.
Some people (barring trolls) claim that the reason such mediocre stats exist is that no top NBA names play there. I assure you, no player, NBA or not, would be entitled to take 25 FGA's per game under a EL coach, unless the team dominated, which is doubtful.
BTW, last time I checked, Jordan didn't average 40 ppg in the NCAA, either. Neither did Hakeem average 30/20, neither did Kareem average 40/20 or Wilt 60/25. So, if you people are that incapable of working out how the Euroleague team works, take as an example the NCAA, only with grown ups instead of 18-22 year olds.

basic principles of euroleague basketball:
COACH - he tends to have strong personality and discipline, majority of coaches in europe are Greg Popovich type. There is no way that you'll have a "supestar" who can jack up 25 shots. NO ****ING WAY.
TEAM - following instructions from your coach, everyone on the floor play for team, every action is for team benefit, no one cant act like a star, otherwise bench is waiting. Offense is controlled, until the last seconds.
DEFENSE - zones 1-3-1, 2-3, 3-2 are so perfectly executed that there is a no room for some crazy penetration points, add that court width is way shorter than NBA.
NBA and European basketball are two different worlds

Yawn. Again lies, lies and more lies. Time now to use facts to prove that every example you gave is a lie.
1. Ty Lawson - played a total of 7 games in Euroleague
2. Ricky Rubio - was the starting pg for the Euroleague champion which he led in assists and steals. Also selected Euroleague Rising Star as the top Euroleague player 22 and under
3. Gary Neal - played a total of 7 games in Euroleague
4. Reggie Williams - played a total of 3 games in Euroleague
5. Jannero Pargo - averaged 12:31 mpg in Euroleague and 15:5 mpg in the NBA, and remember an NBA game is 8 minutes longer. I think a better example is his brother Jeremy Pargo who was selected all-Euroleague 2nd team, averaged 30 mpg in Euroleague and was the starting pg for a Euroleague Final Four team which he led in mpg, points and assists. He came over to the NBA this year and could not even make any NBA roster even as a 12th man.
6. Patrick Beverley - he was a scrub in Euroleague but in between Euroleague and the NBA he played in Eurocup which is the second tier league in Europe behind Euroleague and was selected the MVP of the whole league.
7. Goran Dragic - Euroleague stats 8.6 ppg 2.7 apg NBA stats 9.5 ppg and 2.7 apg and NBA stats are inflated because the game is 8 minutes longer, there are rules that favor the offense and it is easier to get assists counted.
8. Zaza Pachulia - Euroleague stats 4.2 ppg 2.6 rpg NBA stats 6.8 ppg and 5.5 rpg with NBA stats inflated because of the game being 8 minutes longer and rules favoring offense.
9. Flip Murray - played a total of 6 Euroleague games
10. Von Wafer - played a total of 3 Euroleague games
11. Tony Delk - Euroleague stats 7.5 ppg 1 apg NBA stats 9.1 ppg 1.9 apg
So every example you gave was a lie except Patrick Beverley and he between Euroleague and the NBA became the MVP of the 2nd level transnational basketball competition in Europe.
So come list 50 or more cases of Euroleague scrubs who are doing better in the NBA and I will show how they are all lies.

Yawn, lies, yawn, lies, yawn, lies, yawn.
Your level of hypocrisy is truly shocking. You claim Spanoulis was a scrub in the NBA, then you turn around and say guys that spent their time as 3rd stringers and mostly got DNP-CDs while they were in the Euroleague, "were not scrubs".
Your level of hypocrisy is appalling and sickening. You most definitely are a true psychopath.

Spanoulis played 31 games in the NBA and averaged 2.7 points per game. Everybody you mentioned either
A) Basically put up the same of stats in Euroleague as they do (did) in the NBA.
B) Played less than a total of 8 Euroleague games which is not a legit sample size.
with the exception of
1. Rubio - who was a top player on a Euroleague champion. There is no way you can deny that a player who leads a team in assists and was 4th in mpg was not one of the tops players on the team.
2. Patrick Beverly - Yes, again he is the one example you gave which is correct BUT, and now this is what makes you a troll, you conveniently left out that in between being a scrub and Euroleague and a rotation player in the NBA he was the MVP of the whole league of Eurocup, the 2nd best transnational European league after Euroleague..

How hard is it for you to go euroleague.net and check it yourself genius? This guy is claiming that because guys got DNP-CDs the whole time (while being 3rd string) that they cannot be called scrubs.
When that is the exact definition of a scrub. The guys that are 3rd string and usually just sit on the bench.

Again lies, lies and more lies. The reason why those guys only played 7 games or less is because they came over during the NBA strikes (Ty Lawson) and came back to the NBA after the strikes.
As everybody knows even the scrubs play in games when there are blowouts and you can't honestly believe that every Euroleague game is close so scrubs get DNP for every game. Why do you think Spanoulis played in 31 games in the NBA as a super scrub?. When the games are out of reach McGrady and Yao get to sit down and the scrubs like Spanoulis get to play.

You keep saying nothing and wondering why your topics become running jokes.
Some guys says Rubio was good in europe..."He was a scrub" isnt explaining otherwise. You claim to know thel eague. Explain why he wasnt good. Or why awards dont mean what someone who doesnt watch the league claims. Ive seen you say guys like Josh Childress who won awards/were named to all ___ teams sucked.

Theoretically, they could be the result of a league being the best defensive league in the world, a league where the players are so tough and the defensive schemes so well executed that scoring is extremely difficult.
and thats why an african team beat greece and then we went on to beat said african team by 80

:applause: Props to V-Span for this accomplishment. I see that this is his first Euroleague MVP ever. I think we have to credit Deron Williams for this. After he went to the Euroleague and ended up being the GOAT and having his jersey retired after 3 months, Guard play shot up. I feel that if more NBA players can treat the Euroleague as hobby, the European leagues can be better.
It also helps for these same players to struggle in the NBA. Averaging 3 ppg in the NBA taught V-Span humility and that he should stay where he belongs. I've always believed that people should go where they fit. Span just wasn't good enough but realized that and went to a league that was worse but matched his skill level.
Congrats :applause:

Completely agree. Euroleague always tries to make threads personal instead of actually discussing basketball, especially when he's confronted with anything that conflicts with his views. He really does the Euroleague and international basketball a disservice.
