View Full Version : The Knicks are the only Big Market Franchise that has never had a "Mega Star"

Every big market team besides the Knicks have had a "Mega Star".
Lakers: Magic Johnson, Kareem, Shaq, Chamberlain, West, Kobe etc.
Celtics: Larry Bird, Bill Russell
Bulls: Michael Jordan
Heat: Dwyane Wade, Shaq, LeBron
Nets: Julius Erving during the ABA days.
Knicks: Absolutely no one that could be considered a "Mega Star".
Kind of goes to show how shitty of a franchise the Knicks have been for several decades now. :lol
Edit: Forgot to include the Clippers, but they're the epitome of shitty so there's no point in even mentioning them. :lol

Um, yeah he was. You kids must not have been around back in the 80s & 90s, but Ewing was a mega star. Not on the level of MJ, Bird or Magic, but he was on that second tier with Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Dominique, Olajuwon, and Robinson.

I know he was big, but what I mean by "Mega Star" is a player of MJ/Magic/Bird's caliber etc. It's actually kind of weird that the Knicks have never had a player of that caliber considering that they're located in the biggest market in the NBA.

Ewing was a mega star. Those famed Dream Team photo's from back in the day feature 5 players. Jordan, Magic, Barkley, Malone and who else, Patrick Ewing.

He was voted a starter on the All-Star team his rookie season (though he was injured) ... who does that? Not even LeBron.
Mid-late 80s to early-mid 90s only Magic, Bird, Jordan, Thomas (older Kareem I guess) were more famous than him. He was right there with Barkley until he joined the Suns. He was more known than Stockton and Malone, Olajuwon, Wilkins, Robinson, Worthy, ect.
And Walt Frazier was a mega star also.

No, not even a little bit.
And Miami doesn't count as a "big market" if we're talking about households.
Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Boston. The End.
If you want to drop to Miami's Level, then you have to include Orlando, Golden State, Dallas, Houston, and a host of others.

In the 70's they had Walt Frazier, Earl the Pearl Monroe, and Willis Reed ... all well known stars. This was also before the NBA was a global hype machine. So yes, they have had mega stars. Walt Frazier was at a time the coolest, most swagged out player / superstar. And Earl Monroe was known as a street game legend.

I'm guessing by mega star, you mean someone who either transcended the game or was a top 3 player for an extended period.
Well, probably true then. I love Patrick, but he was never a top 3 player in the NBA. Closest was probably 94, but he was behind Hakeem, Pip and David Robinson then.

Of all the guys you listed, only Lebron and Shaq left their teams in free agency in their prime.
Free agency is great for adding sidekicks, and additional pieces, but it's almost impossible to get the true franchise players from it.

Plenty of great players without titles. Ewing was on of the best players to ever play the game, no doubt.
One of my favorite old school videos is the 1984 Olympic team (College) vs. NBA All-Stars... and Jordan and Ewing taking it to guys like Magic and Isiah.

Also I remember Marbury was highly rated back in the day... Wasn't he considered the best offensive PG in the league or something?

I'm sure it has already been pointed out, but Miami is not a "big market" team. Nielsen designates market size on a formula called Designated Market Areas (DMAs), which takes into account many factors.
Here's how NBA cities rank according to Nielsen...

It's a tradeoff. If a star goes to NY and wins, he'll be the biggest star there since Babe Ruth.
If LeBron won a title in NY instead of Miami, it would give him a stronger case for GOAT. Winning on Wade's team will always be a knock on his record.

So is Willis Reed and Patrick Ewing. But hey, don't talk history to some of the kids these days. If they didn't play before the explosion of 24 hour ESPN coverage, they weren't stars.
