View Full Version : Roy Hibbert fined $75k for remarks

NEW YORK -- Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert has been fined $75,000 by the NBA for using inappropriate and vulgar language during postgame interviews following the Pacers' 91-77 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
"While Roy has issued an apology, which is no doubt sincere, a fine is necessary to reinforce that such offensive comments will not be tolerated by the NBA," said NBA Commissioner David Stern.
Well I expected it to be 100k, but seems fair.

it was for the "mother****er" and not for "no homo". Whether we like it or not, a player of the best basketball league should not be calling media members "mother****ers" even if he feels like media isn't doing its job well. This way coaches/media members can call players "mother****ers" for playing bad and wasting their time.
also, Kobe got fined $100k for his incident in 2011. Kobe didn't even say those words while sitting near a mic like hibbert.

Athletes swear during their press conferences or comments, it's not a big deal. I've seen Kobe drop f bombs more times than I can remember without repercussions. It's a casual and loose, saying "MOtha****AS" wasn't an insult to the media.

I strongly believe that he got fined for using the word mother****ers. No one outside of ESPN thinks "no homo" is a gay slur.
As a professional in that position he is entrusted with certain responsibilities, one of which is to not use certain language. And it's not just implied, every player coming into the league is taught certain things, this being one of them.

Disagree. Can't call the media "motherfvckers" on national TV. That's an obvious fine to me

No problem with a 75k fine, hibbert knew it was comming and said at the time he'd accept it. The issue is that flopping fines which affect the actual game are so small and not a %. Any number they pick is crap because it just means big name players can afford to wear the fine while others can't. Should be an in game play like a technical foul or should be a % based fine on their salary or match fee.

KG had the intelligence to realize that he shouldn't say that stuff in a nationally televised press conference
Feel bad for Hibbert as I don't think he had any malice behind his words, but its about what I expected. No way was the NBA going to tacitly approve of his words by not taking a chunk out of his wallet in 2013. Still relative to what he earns, it should be a big deal.

then have the problem with the rule. Stop bringing lebron's name into things that are not related to him. There is no set fine for using "mother****ers" in press conference but there is a set fine for flopping. I think there should be a tech called for flopping but stop bringing lebron into every thread to make your players look better when lebron didn't call media "mother****ers" for writing about him every day.
I am sure if a white player said something like ""Nah, I didn't steal it, I'm not black.", he would be fined and ridiculed by media for months. Both "no homo" and "i'm not black" are jokes. The "no homo" thing was said after calling every media member "mother****ers".

It's not a gay slur, ESPN and the media got it wrong but it's still an insensitive remark because you know people(media and activist groups) will twist it the wrong way, which they already have.
The fine was a little excessive but you can't blame the NBA for trying to cover their own butts. If the NBA didn't do anything about it, you know damn well some media watchdog group will make a big deal out of it.

Hibbert put Stern in a position where they basically had to fine him to cover their own asses. All in all its no big deal, Hibbert didn't harm anyone and a fine equivalent to 0.6% of his annual salary isn't going to bankrupt Hibbert.
Stern has no sense of humor. He is a fascist dictator. Cant wait for him to retire.
 When Stern starts using secret police to kill people then you will have a point. No player actually has to pay any of Stern's fines. They could always choose to leave the NBA. Stern has been the greatest commissioner in American sports history. Where the NBA was when Stern took over, to where it is now. Stern is the GOAT commissioner.

Do most of you people have real jobs? Jobs have rules. Some jobs require you to travel or take people out, etc. During those times (for jobs that don't make people $12M) if you say something really dumb, you might get scolded, lose money (bonus, etc.) or get fired. Roy Hibbert has a job where he is required to talk to the media. During that time he has rules. He broke the rules, and thus he got fined.
He makes $12M A YEAR. And some of you are butthurt on his behalf he's acted not to talk like an immature teenager for the 30 minutes or so (at most) he needs to talk to the media. And this was after a win. Where you just need to talk about positive things. EVERYTHING IS POSITIVE. And he called the media "mother****ers".
I don't feel bad for him, sorry.

i don't think it is a gay slur but it could be taken the same way like if a white player said that "i never stole anything in my life, i am not black".
What? How is that even in the same ballpark?

If you don't think the word HOMO is a gay slur you better educate yourself..It is..It has been for decades.. I know Hibbert did didn't mean anything by it but its not much different then using the n-word...

He didn't call anyone a homo. He used a phrase that a lot of people apparently don't understand
Ok this really has to be explained to you...Homo is a gay slur...he is no homo, meanimg he is not a home..This means he was referring to gay people as homos..Once again that is a gay slur..
This thread shows again how dumb many people are..
The freaking guy used a gay slur. many people would be fired for using that at wor. How old are you?

The NBA's statement said he was fined for his remarks, it says nothing about gay slurs. They aren't about to start a national debate on homosexuality by defending such a stupid phrase like "no homo". At best it was a crude joke about butt sex, at worst it was offensive to gay people. Either way he shouldn't have said it, and he shouldn't have said mother fcker either.
Hibbert's statements have brought a ton of negative press to his team and to the NBA. If you think this fine is unfair you are a moron.

Homo is not a slur. Do you even know what the definition of slur is? How does saying the word 'homo' insult or damage the reputation of gay people?
Gay people ARE homosexual.
He wasn't being derogatory.
He didn't say, "Gay people are retarded." He didn't call anybody a homo.

Was thinking the same damn thing. What a player says outside of the game has NOTHING to do with the game yet theyre still fined for it for an amount more than 7X that of trying to CHEAT in the game.
If thats how they prioritize penalties, the only logical next step would be for LeBron* to either get a 100k fine for his flop or a suspension. Won't happen of course, cuz when LeBron* said 'no homo' nothing happened.
Absolute disgrace.

I am losing patients with you idiots. Homo has been used as a gay slur for decades..The two words that have most been used are homo, and ****..If you don't know this you must be about 15 years old..
Because in the internet age a bunch of non funny morons go around saying no home everytime they bring up something gay doesn't mean it isn't a slur and hasn't been for decades.
The ignorance of young people who spend their lives are the internet is scary...
Go educate yourself and do some research...Amazing..
If you want to write some gay groups and ask them or take the time to research go ahead..But stop with that nonsense that its not a slur..

Like I said I am sure you wouldn't bother spending 20 minutes looking into the FACT that the word HOMO has been used a as a gay slur for decades..Because you are a 15 year old idiot who gets all his knowledge from internet boards..
Its the history of the word not what it means..Bitch is a female dog, but I think we know from the history of its use you can get yourself in trouble by using it..
And what a surprise because idiots always do this, you equate me knowing about the word homo to be gay myself...Like I said you are a moron..

I can turn on my TV right now and watch all manner of deplorable violence being acted out right there. But don't you DARE utter a no-no word on television or you're going to pay.
But you know...freedom and all that.
'Murica, ladies and gentlemen.
It wouldn't go down very well if you were holding a press conference for your company and you just blurted out the words 'motherf**ker' and 'no homo'. Its casual language for the bar or the internet, but not for talking to the press.
