Yeah I saw The Doctor documentary. In the end, he dunks but they cut it out before he finishes. Maybe he misses but Dr J still gets up there. He'll probably out ball most people on this site.

6'7, huge wingspan, genetic freak and not overweight

Wouldn't surprise me if he could still dunk, still :applause: :applause: for doing it after 60

i don't care if it's only a fingertip barely-sending-the-ball-down type of dunk, if you're friggin 63 years old and doing that, that's nuts.

He only needs a 18" vertical to dunk.

06-11-2013, 07:26 PM
That's not him and you know they have the ability to lower the rim right?

He's not dunking at that age. It's a movie and they use special effects.

No.

I would sh!t on him and that's no disrespect to him. He's not going to beat anyone here who actually plays.

No, you wouldn't. You'd get destroyed than sit there in shock.

But believe what you want.

He was dunking with ease from some distance in 1998 in a commercial with Jerry Stackhouse.

Should we just say this was real too.

No he wouldn't, he is 63 and there are some actual ballers on this website.
I'm slightly shorter than him and in my 30's and can play, no 63 year old is beating me.
That's not me being a douche bag either, its just that the guy is 63. His speed, strength, skill, coordination is greatly greatly reduced.

In regards to the video, I believe that is him.
The ball does look really small though.
However he is 6'8 with long arms and in shape, so I think he could do that.

There is a big difference between 48 and 63.

That's called an editing decision. The whole doc is about how great he was, and they're giving you a flash of 'he could still do it' to continue the theme.

They didn't cut him bricking a dunk.

There is a big difference between 48 and 63.

Which is why I wouldnt assume he could take off from far away with ease now. But dunk?

Its being made out to be harder than it is.

This guy is over 50 and doing 360s:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVSZU5TmsQo

And hes 6 inches shorter than Dr.J.

Marques Johnson is 55:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLvjAbYKIsg&feature=player_embedded

And wasnt as athletic as Doc in his prime(though he was athletic).

Its a joke dunk over a "car" but its a real full height rim dunk.

Doctor J being able to dunk in his early 60s isnt shocking.

You can watch Connie Hawkins get the back of his fingers to the rim on a layup at age 62 in his Basketballography episode from 2006. And he broke down well before Doctor J did.

That's nice, considering I said I think he could do it.

I was merely pointing out that I don't give a stuff what he did when he was 48. It's 15 years ago.

I wasnt arguing with you. I saw what you said. I just find the disbelief funny.

And people from 48-62 jumping high enough to dunk I feel is relevant. Especially the person in question doing it easily near 50. He did not lose it quickly.

15 years is not "quickly", especially for someone who has taken the wear and tear of an NBA career. Hell, it's 25% of his life regardless what he did for a living.

These threads about aging are always a great source of information from those who have yet to age.

Kblaze8855

The "Quickly" was in reference to the old commercial which was 10-11 years after he retired. Not now.

Actually it may not have been that long. If it were after 96 maybe AI is in it with him not Jerry Stackhouse who was the Philly star at the time.

Yes, the commercial initially stated to be with Stack from 1998. That one would be 15 years ago, 11 years after Doc retired.

96? You realize that's an even longer time ago than 98, right?

Wouldn't surprise me if he could still dunk, still :applause: :applause: for doing it after 60That about sums it up. Tying into your wingspan comment, the ability to palm a ball with ease makes dunking many, many times easier. Not being able to palm doesn't mean someone has to Darrell Armstrong cuff it, but it does typically mean dunking becomes a downward arm motion whereas a palming dunk can become more of a hand/wrist flick, which can be executed at a much lower elevation.

All that said, it's still cool he can pull that off at 63, even with the height and the giant hands. He just happened to have a few built-in advantages over, say, a similarly aged player who was also very athletic but was not quite as tall and could not palm a rock like grapefruit. I think Michael Jordan would be another example. Freakishly long hands means he barely has to rise above the rim to flush, thus pushing his dunking longevity further down the line than others even though his athleticism might no longer be considered ultra elite.

Though it was slow motion, it seemed like his first steps were quite explosive for his age, as well. I'd like to see that video in normal speed.

Rim was sagging in the front. And you can tell by the angle the ball was travelling just befor the vid cut that the iron was unkind lol

But I believe he can do it no problem

This is a guy that was able to dunk from the free throw line, that is how far he has had to come from. It is reasonable to think in good health he can dunk at 63 given his previous athleticism and his height/wingspan. It isn't like he is doing a 360 windmill or something. It is a one handed dunk where the ball hits the rim before it goes in.
