View Full Version : Are tattoos out of style?

I think tattoos are so 2000's.
I am glad that I never got one. People got tattoos to be different than everyone else. Now everyone has one and I am proud to say I have never got one and I am different from everyone else.
I am also into building my body and I am glad my body is aesthetically pleasing without misplaced tattoos.

If you have to ask people if it's ok to get tattoos, then you shouldn't be getting any tattoos. Simple as that.
And no people don't get tattoos to be different than other people. Again, if you don't have any, don't speak for people that do.

8 right now, probably gonna be 10 soon. And it's pretty simple how these always go. People without tattoos say negative things about them (which is why they don't have them) and people with tattoos defend them (which is why we do have them). Repeat every few months, rinse with warm water.

No tatts.
Won't get any.
Don't really care if you have them ...
but don't get mad if you're some Chris Anderson lookin' nigha, get starred at a wonder why.

Of course. Doesn't need to be acknowledged, I mean, that's how all the discussions on most sites go. But in this particular instance, I'm right by saying tattoos are for insecure punks because you don't really have an argument against it.

This isn't a pissing contest. I'm just saying that it's no longer trendy to get tattoos. I have seen people and celebrities remove their tattoos.
It's out of style in my opinion.
It's a no win situation. Some tattoos look great but some look horrible after all these years. Your first tattoo isn't going to look the same when it was fresh.
Like I said, I build my body and I prefer not to have tattoos. It would be graffiti on this otherwise beautiful body.

No you know what's for insecure losers? Dressing like an idiot hipster with big lenseless nerd glasses in a desperate cry for attention like your idol (unless you've found a new mancrush).

But back on topic, as usual you couldn't be more wrong. My tattoos are covered 90% of the time and have zero to do with attention or what other people think of them. They just represent things that i feel strongly about or i feel describe me/tell a a story about myself. It's kind of like a sign of dedication to an idea/time/aspect of your life, saying that you'll stand by that specific thing as long as you live. In that regard it's actually one of the MOST secure things a person can do...to feel so strongly and firmly about a belief that you're willing to have it marked on your skin forever.

Tattoo's can be symbolic but oftentimes I feel they're used as a way to attract attention, like those guys that walk around playing their acoustic guitar.

To be honest, it does show insecurities. You don't need a permanent reminder of who you are.
If you are an honest, hardworking, loyal or caring person, these are just examples, I don't know who you are, then you don't need some ink to remind you of who you are.
I know I am a loyal and caring dude. I don't need a tattoo to tell me that. I know that inside my mind and heart.
Like I said, it's more for fashion. I rather a person admit it was for fashion than someone saying it's a reminder or representation of themselves. You don't need ink for that.

I never said it was a reminder i said it was a representation. Insecurities are the result of a lack of confidence in something, and a sign of uncertainty. If I was uncertain about something I wouldn't have the confidence to get the tattoo in the first place.
Again, if you don't have any, you can't say why people who have them, have them. I know you like playing devils advocate, so I'm not gonna get worked up over this, but I also know that there are people who legitimately think the things you're saying and I'm just making it known that the stereotypical reasons why non-tattooed people assume people get them, are inaccurate in a lot of cases. Do some people get them for attention or to look cool? Yes of course. But there are also just as many people who have legit/personal reasons for getting them.

If you think someone would care about whether a tattoo is in or out of style, then I could see why you think the way you do about people who have them.

don't care for them and will never get one but Im ok with people getting them.
I do want to point out that tattoos of a kid's face is just the dumbest thing anyone can get. your kids will look nothing like the tattoo after you leave the shop and these things usually look awful. look at Wilson Chandler, he looks like an idiot, he has a creepy looking small head of a child on his neck.

There are different types of tatted up people from everyone I've known well that has them..
You have the guy who has tattoos as a legit hobby.. Sleeving legs and arms big chest tattoos etc. They aren't trying to look cool, just kind of get caught up in it and look at it as a hobby.
Then you have the guys and girls who get the remembrance tattoos for someone that died or some other reason.
Then you have the meatheads or cool guys slutty girls that only have one or two tats in the most visible places.. Girls all variety of tamp stamps and guys lower arms inner biceps tribals etc.
^^those are the worst and you can usually tell a lot about someone based on what kind of tats they have and where they're located.

Exactly. Like I said you can tell who has them for appearance and who has them because they mean something. An example is a lot of the abstract tribal stuff that isn't even a picture of something/they can't explain what it is. For example:
The Rock has a tribal tattoo. There's a whole writeup on it: " In early 2003, Dwayne traveled to Hawaii to have his family history tattooed on him

Until tattoo removal because super accessible and affordable, I feel like tattoos are going to be forced to be in style. Well, on second thought, I guess "out of style" could mean the new folks coming through (youngsters) may opt not to go the tattoo route, leading the current era of people being on sort of an island of tattoo, where they're known as the generation for widespread tattoo application.
The more I think of it, I suppose there's a good chance that'll happen. If this era of random people getting tattoos eventually comes to an end, there's going to be a big pocket of people identified by the mere presence of body sketches (i.e. "Yeah, she's from the tattoo era").

I would personally never get a tattoo because the things that mean enough to get tats from my life are things I don't feel the need to have inked onto my skin. My brother is the opposite tho and I can appreciate why people get them. Just not my style.
Anyone who gets too judgmental either way usually ends up looking foolish.

The tattoo removal industry makes more money off people, than the tattoo industry. Amazing how that works.
I don't care either way, until someone has the dumbest reason ever to get inked up.
Oh, you have barbed wire, Chinese characters, a tribal pattern, a bird, a skull, a flame, and your kids names tattooed on your chest.
Yeah, wow, original, cool. /sarcasm
These are the idiots that take what could be artistic and symbolic, and turn the whole culture into a group of meatheads. The 75% that make the 25% of amazing tats look bad. And of course, if you're dumb enough to buy into it with a piss-poor reason, you're stuck defending it.

WIthout getting too specific, they represent different people/phases/aspects of my life so far, and as I have more big influences and events I'll get more to commemorate those
I have one that represents the bond between me and my dad, one that represents my childhood, one that i got to commemorate my college graduation because that was something people always said I could never do, 2 to represent my development as an adult after college and growing from the mistakes I made during those years (got those alongside the college one), one to represent my family's New Orleans heritage etc etc etc. Each one has a different meaning and I could type up paragraphs upon paragraphs explaining the story behind each if I felt like it. Of course a lot of people say "you don't need a tattoo to remind you of those things" blah blah blah. But hell by that logic we don't need photographs to hold onto memories of life's events. We lived them so why should we need a visual representation? Again, it's just something I like to have and something I will continue to add onto as time goes on, whether it's "in" or not.
But yeah that's always been my thing: if i can type out an explanation of WHY I got it, then there's justification for getting it. Some people will get like a flower and there's no real justification besides "it's pretty". I mean if that's their thing then fine, it's their body, but I personally wouldn't get one if I didn't have a reason I believe justified it, and in the case of all of mine, I do.

You don't need to justify your tattoos to anyone but yourself. Anyone in here saying a tattoo that means something is "OK" and a tattoo that someone just thinks looks good is "stupid" is being ridiculous. Absolutely, have your opinions about tattoos, whatever, but when you start drawing the line at "Oh ok you have a reason for your tatty thats so cool dude!" to "Oh you just got a tattoo cause you wanted one, that's retarded," that's just absurd to me. It's an individual's body. They don't have to f*cking explain themselves to you. Get over yourselves.

I agree with this, but the only difference is those that later regret those tats. If you get a tattoo, then do it because it's what you actually want. Treat it like a permanent decision.

I've thought about getting tatted many times...*IF* I ever did I would acknowledge it completely a fashion statement and just because I do think it looks cool, but as awesome as a lot of tattoo art is right now I still have troubles thinking about what I would think "looks cool" the rest of my life...

It seems like we have two types of people and their tattoos. The ones that mean something to the owner and the owners that think it's cool.
Here's why I think they are the same exact people. Trendy types or ignorant types.
Tattoos with meaning: If a part of your life was meaningful, shouldn't you always remember it? You don't need to be that feeble minded to need something permanent to remind you of that person or moment.
Fashion Tattoos: Equally bad. They get tattoos based off of fashion. It's now out of style, now they are stuck with it. Tramp stamps fall into this category.

How can your opinion be "right", it's subjective, of course there's no argument.
No hositility here, but I also wonder what compels someone to say something like "tattoos are for insercure punks". There was obiviously a reason behind it, whether it was to get a reaction, or maybe someone with tattoos violated you in the past? Curious.

I still have troubles thinking about what I would think "looks cool" the rest of my life...Ha, yep. Same here. I don't have anything I feel that needs to be memorialized on my body and I most certainly don't think I could think of something cool enough to make myself believe that I'd always love it.
Sometimes I look back to my senior year of high school (2002) and try to imagine what kind of "cool" tattoo I would have gotten if I somehow decided I was undoubtedly going to get inked up. I'm pretty sure it would have been an unmitigated disaster. I figure it would have been either a Hieroglyphics logo, a basketball with my high school jersey number inside, or perhaps my girlfriend's initials.
Tattoos on everyday folk don't really bother me either way. That said, I do tend to see a few different categories of people in this regard. It seems I know a few who are sincerely interested in the idea of body art and committed to it. More often, it feels as if most I know went the "cool" route. It's those tats I tend to look at years later and think, "Man, they're stuck with that forever."

I dont have one, but maybe I will someday. Name of my children, some nice quote or something like that. Or some reminder of smt big in my life. Right now, I cant tell surely, but I simply dont see a problem with it. Tattoos, smoking, alkohol, drugs, whatever. Its your body and you have right to do whatever you want with it. I dont like guys who are arguing because someone is doing things that he likes.
But I must say I dont like those tattoos with no meaning, like that one posted here already. My friend has 2 greatest ones that I have ever seen on his back. Couple of lines for his dead mother on the left side, and nice quote on a paper on the right side. And it looks cool too.
