The '03 Spurs are the weakest of the 4 Duncan championship teams. I don't see them getting out of the region. I like the '02 Lakers or '02 Kings.

Not necessarily. They did finish with the best regular season and playoff run. They also did beat the 3 time defending champion Lakers with Kobe&Shaq both in their primes (something all the other Duncan teams failed to do). And they did have Duncan at his peak (all other championship Duncan versions were worse) and they did have basically all the other good teammates of Duncan (Only championship team with Parker, Manu, and Robinson) though they weren't in their primes.

But really the 2003 Spurs accomplished more than any other Spur teams in franchise history.

Interesting idea

One thing I think we'll notice is the east will struggle in this tournament. The seeding was given based on record, however I expect a 50 win team in the west to be much tougher than a 50 win team in the east, especially early on in the decade. Thus, upsets will likely happen places where an eastern conference team was given a high seed due to an inflated record or postseason success.

16 2005 Chicago Bulls

Preview: The 2003 San Antonio Spurs finished with a 60-22 season. They then went along and won the NBA Championship. Many would call this the weakest Spurs team but I would call it the strongest. It featured Tim Duncan at his peak, winning his 2nd MVP award in a row. In the playoffs they knocked off the 3 time defending champion LA Lakers in route to a title. They were a strong defensive team while being very good on offense. All the important pieces of the Spurs championship runs were present on this team: Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Robinson.

The 2005 Chicago Bulls were the 1st Bulls team to make the playoffs after Jordan had left them. They surprised many people that year after years of struggle. They played good team basketball and were led by Curry, Hinrich, and Gordon all averaging above 15. Their strength was their defense and they will need to give it all they have to force an upset here.

2 great defensive teams so it figures to be a good tough series. The Bulls offense wasn't that strong and the Spurs are a top defensive team. They will cause the Bulls to struggle, the Bulls have to find a way to score the ball effectively to have a shot here. The other question is can they stop Tim Duncan. He was at his peak here. Tyson Chandler is their best bet to slow him down.

Game 1: at Spurs 98, Bulls 86

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8054232&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: B.Bowen 14pts/6reb on 6/10 FG

Recap: In a game where Duncan was mostly a non-factor, the Bulls still failed to get a win. Duncan struggled as the tough Bulls was focused on stopping him, but it led to open looks for the rest of his teammates as they won in a balanced effort.

Game 2: at Spurs 104, Bulls 75

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8054250&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 21points/18reb/6ast/6blk

Recap: The Spurs dominated Game 2 with a 29 point blow-out win. Tim Duncan continued to face tough defense but still found a way to control the game dominating on the defensive end as the Bulls overall as a team shot just 31% from the field. The Spurs continued with a balance effort on offense to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Kind of odd Duncan only got 35 minutes in game one since he wasn't in foul trouble or anything.

Game 3: Spurs 97, at Bulls 95

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8054365&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 22pts/15reb/3blk

Recap: The Bulls played their best game giving everything they had in this crucial game 3. But the Spurs pulled away again behind another great effort by Duncan and once again good-balanced scoring on offense. The Spurs now lead the series 3-0.

Game 4: Spurs 88, at Bulls 83

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8054372&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 17pts/15reb/6blk

Recap: The Spurs sweep the Bulls 4-0. The Bulls played very hard at home once again, holding a 10 point lead in the 4th, but the Spurs scrambled back and finished the game strong sweeping the series. This was a tough defensive battle but the Spurs came up on top.

Can't believe how inefficient Duncan was, but still, an 18-15-4-4-1 stat-line is pretty nice. 18-4-5-1 on 47% shooting from Parker was pretty good, too.

Didn't think about that. Still, only 35 minutes in a semi-close game where he only had 2 fouls seems a bit odd.

And despite that inefficiency the Spurs swept. Like I said this team had a lot of good balance and is going to be a tough team to beat in this tournament. A worthy #1 seed.

2 2002 Los Angeles Lakers

http://www.yazarkafe.com/images/blog/0tkIS91vVpIR.jpg

15 2004 Memphis Grizzlies

Preview: The 2002 Lakers finished with a 58-24 record and helped complete a Laker 3-peat. Most people call them the weakest of the 3-peat, as they had a lot of trouble getting past the 2002 Kings. Nonetheless, they were champions and have Kobe and Shaq both in their primes on this roster.

The 2004 Grizzlies finished with a 50-32 record, the most wins in franchise history at that time. Pau Gasol had turned this franchise around and put them in the winning direction. Along with Gasol this team had 4 other players scoring in double-figures giving them a balanced look on offense. Their season success did not last long though as they got swept in the 1st round.

We have seen this matchup before, as the 00 Lakers beat the 06 Grizzlies in 6 games. That series was competitive so this one maybe too. The 06 Grizzlies did a good job of slowing down Kobe throwing Battier/Eddie Jones at him, however this 04 Grizzly team may not have that luxury ,and even Kobe was a better player in 2002. Nonetheless, if the Grizzlies want to upset they will have to at least slow down Kobe/Shaq in this series.

OT - Did you see Kblaze's thread on Shaq? If not, I'd give it a look. To summarize briefly, he's contending that he'd draft nearly a dozen bigs before non-bigs, and that we in general undervalue guys with size. We had a conversation on this a few months ago (I think either when talking about peaks, or in the best players on offense+defense thread), so I think you'd appreciate the discussion.

3 2006 Detroit Pistons

vs.

http://posterizes.com/wp-content/uploads/blazers2.jpg

14 2003 Portland TrailBlazers

Preview: The 2006 Detroit Pistons went 64-18 in the regular season. They are possibly the best team in the decade to not make the finals. They have 4 All-Stars on their team, more than any other team in this tournament, they have excellent chemistry, and are great offensively and defensively. They lost to the 2006 Champion Heat in the ECF being upset. But otherwise this team enjoyed quite a bit of success.

The 2003 TrailBlazers went 50-32 in the regular season before losing a tough series in Game 7 against the Mavericks. Rasheed Wallace was the leader of this team, and is actually in both teams in this matchup. They had other good players like Bonzi Wells, Pippen, Damon Staudomire, but overall this team was on the declining end and a shell of their 2000 Blazer team.

This should be a good series of 2 veteran teams. Obviously the Detroit Pistons have the advantage here with their starting 5 being one of the best starting 5 in NBA history not just this tournmanet. These 5 have had a lot of success together and are a strong 3rd seed. Watching Rasheed vs. Rasheed will be interesting, but the Pistons Rasheed will have to do less as he has more help. The key for teh Blazers is going to be stopping the Pistons backcourt duo of Billups-Hamilton, if they are able to do that they can produce an upset here.

Game 1: Blazers 87, at Pistons 83

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8077885&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: R.Wallace 13pts/13reb/4blk

Recap: The Portland Trailblazers upset the Pistons in Game 1 winning a thrilling battle. With the game tied at 83-83 with 1 minute left, Bonzi Wells hit back to back clutch shots to give his team the Game 1 win. Rasheed Wallace played good defense and overall the Pistons were held to just 39% shooting. They will need a better performance than that to take Game 2.

Game 2: at Pistons 110, Blazers 86

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8077947&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Billups 35pts/14ast/7reb on 10/18 FG

Recap: In a must-win game the Pistons played their best. Excellent offensive execution while continuous stingy defense. Billups especially had a career-level performance. He was unstoppable today. His great offensive performance and good overall defense by the Pistons evens up the series 1-1.

Game 3: at Blazers 98, Pistons 92

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8077972&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: R.Wallace 20pts/6reb on 7/13 FG

Recap: The Blazers outscore the Pistons 30-16 in the 4th quarter to erase the Pistons lead and take Game 3. R.Wallace was once again key, as the Pistons really had trouble scoring down the stretch. Good defense has been the key for both of the Blazers wins now.

Game 4: at Blazers 94, Pistons 87

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8078061&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: R.Wallace 27pts/12reb on 12/22 FGs

Recap: The Blazers-Pistons once again came down to the 4th quarter, and once again good offense down the stretch got the Blazers the win. They win both their games at home to take a 3-1 lead over the 3rd seeded Detroit Pistons. Rasheed Wallace was huge today having his biggest game of the series. These 2 teams have battled it close both times in Portland but the Blazers have come up on top.

Game 5: at Pistons 110, Blazers 97

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8078073&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: B.Wallace 17pts/18reb on 8/12 FG

Recap: Facing elimination the Pistons stay alive. They had no offensive struggle as they came in with 63pts in the 1st half. Rip Hamilton led them in scoring with 26 as they shot almost 55% from the field. They will have to now win in Portland to keep this series alive.

Game 6: Pistons 112, at Blazers 98

Box Score:http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8078083&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: R.Wallace 32pts/5reb 7threes

Recap: This time the Pistons had no problem finding their offense in the 4th quarter with a 32pt 4th quarter. It was another close game entering the 4th, these type of games the Pistons have lost 3 times before. But this time the Pistons got the job done led by Rasheed Wallace who had 7 threes tonite forcing a huge Game 7.

vs.

http://www.sportsgatherings.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/houston-rockets-logo-222x300.gif

13 2005 Houston Rockets

Preview: The 2002 Sacramento Kings went 61-21 in the regular season and lost in Game 7 to the eventual champion LA Lakers in one of the most controversial series ever. Many still feel this was the best team in the league in 2002 and deserve to have a championship. Nonetheless here they are again alive in this tournament with a shot to redeem themselves and make a statement of how good they were.

The 2005 Houston Rockets went 51-31 and had the all-star duo of McGrady-Ming. They lost McGrady in the playoffs thus did not get past the 1st round in a series that was also very controversial, but he will be healthy here in the tournament. Yao Ming was still getting better but McGrady was already as good as they got. Besides for McGrady and Ming this team did not have much more to offer so both McGrady and Ming will need performances for this team to win some series.

The Kings believe they should have gotten a 1 or 2 seed and now have something to prove. Their path to retribution starts with Houston, where they will have to stop McGrady and Ming to win this matchup. The Rockets also felt they should have gone further than they did and will have to upset the Kings to move further now. How well Doug Christie can guard McGrady will be key in this series.

Player of the Game: C.Webber 21pts/9reb/4blk

Recap: The Sacramento Kings take Game 1 in the series with a very good defensive effort holding the Rockets to 39.5% shooting in Arco Arena. Tracy McGrady was well-defended by Dough Christie as the Kings win by some good defense in Game 1.

Game 2: at Kings 95, Rockets 86

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8090752&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Recap: IArco Arena and their cow-bells were once again ringing and it was loud. The Kings trailed by 8 mid-4th quarter but went on a 17-4 run in the 4th to take the lead for good. They played great defense again, especially on McGrady who went 7/27 allowing the Kings to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8090808&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Webber 33pts/10reb

Recap: In a must-win game for the Rockets, the Rockets fall short again. Webber dominated on the offensive end playing very aggressive, as the Kings played their best offense of the series. McGrady continues his struggle in the series.

Game 4: Kings 97, at Rockets 92

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8090822&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: V.Divac 11pts/11reb/6stl

Recap: The Kings sweep the series 4-0 against the Rockets. This game was tied 88-88 with 90 seconds remaining, but Divac and Webber combined 9 points in the last 90 seconds to finish the series off. The Kings advance to the 2nd round.

5 2003 Dallas Mavericks

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r48/RoniH/4.gif

12 2004 New Jersey Nets

Preview: The 2003 Dallas Mavericks went 60-22 in the regular season before losing to the eventual champion Spurs in the WCF. This was probably the best Nash-Dirk era Maverick team. Besides for Nash/Dirk, they also had prime Michael Finley giving them an effective Big 3. This team

Game 1: Nets 127, at Mavericks 116

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8121006&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: J.Kidd 28pts/15ast/8reb

Recap: The Mavericks were absolutely terrible on defense Game 1 allowing the Nets to score like it was nothing. 4 Net players had over 20 points while altogether they shot 58% from the field and turned it over just 8 times. Jason Kidd led the charge with a huge performance, Kittles, Jefferson, and K-Mart also had over 20 points. The Mavericks played great offense too especially from Nash-Van Exel, but the Nets were at least able to limit Dirk holding him to just 16 points.

Game 2: at Mavericks 111, Nets 107 (OT)

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8121073&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.Nash 26pts/12ast on 10/18 FG

Recap: Both teams played much better defense here in Game 2 with Dallas coming up on top at the end. This game also came down to the 4th quarter, the Mavericks led 79-70 entering the 4th but that deficit was easily cut allowing us to see a thrilling finish. K-Mart hit a shot with 4 seconds left to send it to OT, where big 3s by Bell and Dirk in the clutch gave the Mavericks a must-win game 2.

Game 3: Mavericks 115, at Nets 89
Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8121115&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: D.Nowitzki 29pts/10reb on 11/21 FGs

Recap: After a close up and down 1st half the game was tied at 57-57. But in the 2nd half the Nets just could not keep up with Dallas

11 2009 San Antonio Spurs

Preview: The 2004 Minnesota Timberwolves went 58-24 in the regular season before losing to the Lakers in the WCF. They were led by MVP Kevin Garnett. He was at his best, and this was the most talented roster he played with in Minnesota. Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell both were healthy and had good seasons giving them an effective Big 3 with big KG in the middle.

The 2009 San Antonio Spurs went 54-28 before losing in the 1st round for the 1st time in Duncan

Game 1: Spurs 103, at Timberwolves 93

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8124204&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 30pts/19reb/3blk

Recap: The Spurs take a tough Game 1 on the road. The Spurs were in control throughout but the Timberwolves would not go away. However the Spurs continued to play tough and held on to the lead to the very end. Duncan was huge for them in Game 1 leading all scorers with 30 points. KG also had a big game with 26pts/21reb/9ast/6blk but the effort was not enough as both Cassell and Spreewell struggled. He will have to do more if he wants to win the series himself.

Game 2: at Timberwolves 116, Spurs 113

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8124288&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: K.Garnett 30pts/21reb/7blk/6stl on 12/22 FG

Recap: With Kevin Garnett in foul-trouble, the Spurs built a 20 point half-time lead. Garnett did a better job staying out of foul trouble in the 2nd half, and scored 16 of his 30 points in the 4th to rally the Timberwolves back to win the game. The Timberwolves trailed almost all game but finally were able to take the 109-108 lead with KG

Another tight series that goes onto only 5 games. Great effort from KG, but the Timberwolves really had no other big man while San Antonio along side Duncan had some servicable bigmen (Gooden, Kurt Thomas, etc.). That and Tony Parker outplaying Cassell made the difference in a lot of those close games.

The Spurs are doing really well in this tournament, 4 of their 5 teams have already advanced to the 2nd round including the lowest of the 11 2009 Spurs.

7 2001 Milwaukee Bucks

vs.

http://posterizes.com/wp-content/uploads/heat2.jpg

10 2000 Miami Heat

Preview: The 2001 Milwaukee Bucks went 52-30 in the regular season before losing to the 76ers in the WCF. They were led by a big 3: Sam Cassell, Ray Allen, and Glenn Robinson. All 3 players were in their primes and could put the ball in the hoop. These 3 made the Bucks one of the top offensive teams in the NBA.

The 2000 Miami Heat went 52-30 in the regular season. They were led by Alonzo Mourning, who was one of the top players at this point in time. He won DPOY and was a threat on offense as well. Along with Alonzo they had a prime Mashburn. Tim Hardaway was also on this squad though not in his prime anymore.

This matchup consists of 2 eastern conference teams from the early 2000s. Both teams were full of talent and could run with any team. To beat the Bucks you have to slow down their Big 3, and to beat Miami you have to worry about Zo on both ends. Which team will accomplish their goals? I expect a tight 7 game series.

Game 1: at Bucks 96, Heat 90

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8173129&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: G.Robinson 34pts on 15/29 FG

Recap: The Bucks take Game 1 off a strong performance from Glenn Robinson with 34 points. Sam Cassell added 21 points and 11 assists as the Bucks lead 1-0.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8173152&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: A.Mourning 26pts/11reb/6blk

Recap: The Heat even up the series at 1-1 with another strong performance from Mourning. Zo has been a beast both games so far and is the reason the series are tied at 1-1. Big dog Robinson and Ray Allen each had over 30 points but it was not enough to win the game for the Bucks.

Game 3: at Heat 100, Bucks 95

Player of the Game: A.Mourning 33pts/11reb/3blk on 15/21 FG

Recap: Alonzo Mourning continues to be a big problem for the Bucks as he dominated in the interior defense of the Bucks for another big game. Ray Allen and Cassell both played for the Bucks but Robinson struggled.

Game 4: at Heat 108, Bucks 102

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8173177&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: A.Mourning 31pts/12reb/3blk on 13/19 FG

Recap: Alonzo Mourning came through in the clutch as both teams fought hard for another thrilling game. The game was tied with just 1:30 left, but then 5 straight points from Alonzo Mourning gave the Heat the lead for good. They now lead 3-1 in the series.

http://www.nba.com/media/celtics/CelticsLogo_History.gif

9 2002 Boston Celtics

Preview: The 2008 New Orleans went 56-26 and were led by Chris Paul at his best. This team was a lot more talented than that as well, they had another all-star in David West and good other players like Peja and Tyson Chandler. Nonetheless, this team revolved around Chris Paul. He was their heart and soul, and if they want to advance in this tournament, Chris Paul will have to lead the way.

The 2002 Boston Celtics went 49-33 in the regular season before losing to the Nets in the ECF. They were led by the all-star duo of Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker. Both were young rising stars for this Boston Celtic team which had become very entertaining to watch. They had the star power and could score in bunches.

Chris Paul and the balanced Hornets take on the young all-star duo of Pierce and Walker. The key for the Hornets will just be containing both Pierce and Walker, if they can do a well job defending even one of them they will have a good shot at winning the series. For the Celtics, it starts with stopping Chris Paul and ends there. Kenny Anderson will probably be the primary defender on Paul, not good news.

1 2003 San Antonio Spurs

vs.

http://www.thebestshoppers.com/NewOrleans-Hornets.gif

8 2008 New Orleans Hornets

Preview: The 2003 San Antonio Spurs finished with a 60-22 season. They then went along and won the NBA Championship. Many would call this the weakest Spurs team but I would call it the strongest. It featured Tim Duncan at his peak, winning his 2nd MVP award in a row. In the playoffs they knocked off the 3 time defending champion LA Lakers in route to a title. They were a strong defensive team while being very good on offense. All the important pieces of the Spurs championship runs were present on this team: Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Robinson.

The 2008 New Orleans went 56-26 and were led by Chris Paul at his best. This team was a lot more talented than that as well, they had another all-star in David West and good other players like Peja and Tyson Chandler. Nonetheless, this team revolved around Chris Paul. He was their heart and soul, and if they want to advance in this tournament, Chris Paul will have to lead the way.

Both teams were impressive in the 1st round. The Spurs swept the Bulls in 4 games, Duncan averaged 18.0ppg and 15.2rpg leading the way for the Spurs. The Hornets only needed 5 games to beat Boston, Chris Paul averaged 21.2ppg and 14.8apg while Chandler was a beast with 17.6ppg and 13.6rpg on 77.1% FG. If the Spurs want to win this series, they will have to stop Paul. Tony Parker is not the best defender so good help defense will be key. Luckily Duncan and Robinson will be waiting in the paint to stop Chris Paul. Chandler dominated the interior of Boston, but he is going against a much tougher interior this time in San Antonio. He will have to also guard and slow down Duncan as much as he can. I think this can be a close series, both teams have the players they need to win it, an upset is possible.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8190692&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 21pts/16reb/4blk

Recap: The Spurs dominate at home in Game 1. It was all San Antonio right off the bat, as the Spurs took an early lead and never looked back. Duncan was well defended but the Spurs shot well from downtown going 10/18 as a team, Bruce bowen led the effort going 6/8 from downtown with 20 points. Chris Paul was the only one who had a good game with 22pts/11ast but overall the Spurs did a good job on defense anchored by their twin towers Duncan & Robinson who combined for 8 blocks.

Game 2: at Spurs 102, Hornets 93

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8190709&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 23pts/12reb/5blk on 9/17 FG

Recap: The Spurs take a 2-0 lead in the series commanding the game the whole way. It was not a blowout this team, but San Antonio remained in control throughout. They played great offense again and their defense was strong. Duncan led the way with another 20-10 game as he has gotten off to a good start in the series. Chris Paul played well again for the Hornets but West struggled against Duncan while Peja could not find his flow against Bowen.

Hornets make adjustments to give more minutes to Chandler and Paul.

Game 3: Spurs 93 ,at Hornets 84

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8191250&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 24pts/22reb/5blk on 11/19 FG

Recap: The Spurs take a 3-0 lead in the series continuing to show everyone why they were a 1 seed. Tim Duncan had his best game of the series with a 20-20 game and played outstanding defense throughout. He scored 22 of his 24 points in the 2nd half for the Spurs. The Hornets overall shot just 34% from the field and had no answers on offense.

Game 4: at Hornets 102, Spurs 78

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8191257&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Chandler 14pts/19reb

Recap: The Hornets show heart and keep the series alive. Chandler had a big effort today while Chris Paul dished out 18 assists to win the game. The Hornets also played great defense as almost everyone besides Duncan struggled.

Game 5: at Spurs 95, Hornets 93

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8191349&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 28pts/16reb/6ast on 11/21 FG

Recap: The Spurs win the series in 5 games in a close win. The Spurs led by as much as 18 points before the Hornets rallied back tying the game. But the Spurs had the final shot of the game and who did they go to besides Duncan. Duncan hit a buzzer-beater winner over Chandler to win the game and finish the series. He led all scorers with 28 points and showed why he was one of the best in the game.

Definately MVP level performance by Duncan in this series, against Tyson Chandler too. 2003 Tim Duncan was as good as anyone in this tournament. Chris Paul played well too, but he seemed to struggle more against a tougher D.

2 2002 Los Angeles Lakers

vs.

http://posterizes.com/wp-content/uploads/heat2.jpg

10 2000 Miami Heat

Preview: The 2002 Lakers finished with a 58-24 record and helped complete a Laker 3-peat. Most people call them the weakest of the 3-peat, as they had a lot of trouble getting past the 2002 Kings. Nonetheless, they were champions and have Kobe and Shaq both in their primes on this roster. Just having 2 of the top 10 players in their primes makes this team dangerous.

The 2002 Lakers swept past the 1st round against the Grizzlies dominating the series. The Heat on the other hand had a tough series against the Bucks which they eventually won in 6 games winning all their home games and getting a road win. Alonzo Mourning was a monster that series averaging 27/11 on 64% shooting. This series matchup might be decided between Shaq and Alonzo, both of which were playing their very best basketball. Mourning was even the DPOY that season. They also had a prime Mashburn and an overall deep team. But lets not forget about Kobe Bryant, who was also in his prime. Kobe could probably keep up with all the Heat role-players, but this matchup will probably be decided between Shaq and Zo.

11 2009 San Antonio Spurs

Preview: The 2006 Detroit Pistons went 64-18 in the regular season. They are possibly the best team in the decade to not make the finals. They have 4 All-Stars on their team, more than any other team in this tournament, they have excellent chemistry, and are great offensively and defensively. They lost to the 2006 Champion Heat in the ECF being upset. But otherwise this team enjoyed quite a bit of success.

The 2003 Dallas Mavericks went 60-22 in the regular season before losing to the eventual champion Spurs in the WCF. This was probably the best Nash-Dirk era Maverick team. Besides for Nash/Dirk, they also had prime Michael Finley giving them an effective Big 3. This team’s strengths were obviously on offense and overall will be tough to beat because of that.

Both the Kings and Mavericks easily advanced in the 1st round. The Kings swept Houston while Dallas needed just 5 games to beat the Nets. Both those teams are pretty evenly matched. They both won over 60 games in the regular season and both teams were #1 seeds in the West before eventually losing in the WCF to the eventual champions in 2002 and 2003. So you can see the similarities in the level of both of these teams. Both teams also were excellent on offense making this series a fun one to watch. The battle between Dirk and Webber could decide series.

Game 1: Mavericks 136, at Kings 125

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305586&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: M.Finley 39pts/13reb on 15/24 FG

Recap: The Mavericks and Kings go on a shootout in Game 1 both teams trading buckets all game long. The Mavericks though had more firepower as Michael Finely has a huge 39 point performance to take Game 1 from the Kings. The Mavericks had a 22 point lead in the 3rd but the Kings battled back and cut it down to 2 in the 4th. But that is as close as they would get as Dallas got hot again and finished the Game off with a win. The Kings will need to play better defense if they want to win this series.

Game 2: at Kings 113, Mavericks 106

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305607&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Webber 30pts/11reb/7ast

Recap: The Kings even up the series at 1-1 in a must-win home game. The 1st half was close but the Kings pulled away in the 2nd half of this one. Webber was huge as he had another 30 point game and this one in just 33 minutes of play limited due to foul trouble.

Recap: The Mavericks take a 2-1 advantage in the series winning a close thriller. Nowitzki hit a buzzer-beating 3 pointer to win the game for Dallas. This game was as close as it got as the whole game was close, Webber hit a big shot to tie it up with 5 seconds left but that was enough for Nowitzki to get a good look and win the game. Nash was also big in the 4th scoring 11 of his 22 points in the 4th.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305634&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Webber 26pts/15reb/8ast

They totally demolished Dallas today who did not play good defense at all alowing the Kings to shoot 54% while shooting 41% themselves. This game was a complete slaughter as the Kings had a 30+ point lead at one point. Dallas will need to regain their composure to comeback in this series.

Both teams higher the minutes of their stars with the series tied at 2-2

Game 5: Mavericks 119, at Kings 102

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305642&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: S.Nash 27pts/11ast

Recap: The Mavericks came in with the energy this game winning a big one on the road to take a 3-2 lead in the series. The Mavericks Big 3 had their best performance. Finley had 32/7, Dirk with 31/13, and Nash with 27/11 as they combined for 90 points tonight. The Kings also had a very tough 2nd quarter scoring just 12 points, and in an offensive series like this, thats all it takes to lose.

Game 6: Kings 127, at Mavericks 123

Box Score:http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305649&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Webber 38pts/11reb/8ast

Recap: The Kings stay alive and force a huge Game 7. In a high scoring close battle, Dallas had a 3 point lead with 2:30 left in the game, but Webber turned his game up a notch and scored 10 points in the final 2:30 to win the game for the Kings. He finished with 38 points while Peja had his best performance of the series with 35 points. Now this amazing series comes down to just 1 game. Game 7.

Both teams higher the minutes of all their stars for a Game 7 battle

Game 7: at Kings 114, Mavericks 102

Box Score:http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8305663&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1
Player of the Game: C.Webber 45pts/16reb/10ast on 18/33 FG

Recap: The Kings win a classic Game 7 and the series. Chris Webber delivered probably the best game of the entire tournament thus far, with a 45 point triple-double performance in Game 7 of the series. This game was pretty close the whole way but the Mavericks finally ran out of answers in the final 2 minutes as the Kings put them away. Amazing series.

Just started working on them. Can't promise I'll have them done real soon, because I get sidetracked sometimes. Usually I don't even work on one series straight through until it's done, but I'm pretty excited about seeing the stats for this one, so I'll probably try and get it done by the time I got to bed.

1 2003 San Antonio Spurs

vs.

http://www.enbiej.pl/wp-content/2012/10/Kings-300x300.gif

4 2002 Sacramento Kings

Preview: The 2003 San Antonio Spurs finished with a 60-22 season. They then went along and won the NBA Championship. Many would call this the weakest Spurs team but I would call it the strongest. It featured Tim Duncan at his peak, winning his 2nd MVP award in a row. In the playoffs they knocked off the 3 time defending champion LA Lakers in route to a title. They were a strong defensive team while being very good on offense. All the important pieces of the Spurs championship runs were present on this team: Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Robinson.

The 2002 Sacramento Kings went 61-21 in the regular season and lost in Game 7 to the eventual champion LA Lakers in one of the most controversial series ever. Many still feel this was the best team in the league in 2002 and deserve to have a championship. Nonetheless here they are again alive in this tournament with a shot to redeem themselves and make a statement of how good they were.

One of the most anticipated matchups of the Sweet 16. The 2003 San Antonio Spurs have dominated in the 1st 2 rounds, going 8-1 overall. They have had no trouble, played excellent defense, and have been led by MVP Tim Duncan. The Sacramento Kings many consider the best non-championship team of the 2000s swept in the 1st round and then went on a tough 7 game series against the Mavericks coming up on top in Game 7. Chris Webber was phenomenal averaging 32/12/7 for the Kings including a classic Game 7 performance. But now he has to go against Tim Duncan the Spurs. The Kings have more firepower than the Spurs but the Spurs have that championship experience and the best player on the court. This is going to be a tough series.

Game 1: Kings 114, at Spurs 104

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8335787&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: C.Webber 31pts/10reb

Recap: The Kings come out strong on the road once again and take Game 1 from the Spurs. The Spurs played great defense in the 1st half but everything collapsed in the 2nd half as the Kings overall scored 72 points in the 2nd half on the Spurs. Webber continues to be huge for the Kings as Peja and Bibby added 24 and 21 respectively.

Game 2: at Spurs 100, Kings 76

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8335788&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 29pts/23reb/3blk on 13/23 FG

Recap: The San Antonio Spurs even up the series at 1-1 with a dominating win. This time they played strong defense all throughout the game holding the great Kings offense to just 36% shooting and 76 points. Tim Duncan had a monster Game 2 as he easily outplayed Webber this time.

Spurs make some adjustments and give Bowen more minutes to help guard Peja. Both teams higher the minutes of their stars.

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 39pts/24reb/9blk on 17/25 FG

Recap: The Kings stun the Spurs in San Antonio to take a 3-2 lead in the series. The Spurs were up by as much as 19 points in the 1st half when the Kings offense caught fire in the 2nd half and the Spurs defense collapsed. Tim Duncan had probably the best performance on a losing team this entire series, finishing with 39pts/24reb/9blk on 17/25 FG, it is shocking that despite his performance the Spurs lost the game. Webber was huge today just missing a triple-double, the Kings have a chance to finish the series off at home.

Game 6: Spurs 113, at Kings 94

Box Score:http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8335837&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 17pts/13reb/7ast

Recap: The Spurs keep alive in the series and force a Game 7. Tim Duncan finally had a lot of help from the Spurs as the Spurs got a huge win in Sacramento. Six players were in double-figures. The game was close all the way as the Spurs led by 3 entering the 4th. But that is when they played their best knowing that if they lost today the season would be over. Webber struggled tonight going 8/23 from the field.

Both teams higher the minutes of their stars for Game 7

Recap: The Spurs win the series in 7 games advancing to the elite 8. Duncan and Parker got in early foul trouble but the Spurs depth kept the lead to 9 at the end of the 1st, when Parker and Duncan returned in the 2nd, they help extend the lead to 23 points as it looked like the Spurs would run away with this one. But the Kings battled back eventually tying it at 71-71 with Bobby Jackson

Classic series by Tim Duncan :applause: Maybe the best series performance of the tournament?
I think he reminded everyone why he was the best player in the NBA in 2003 and how good he was at his peak.

Very good series though, not surprised it went to 7. With how many San Antonio Spur teams remain and how good they have looked in the tournament, I will say I will not be surprised at all if a Spurs team wins this whole thing.

Working on the stats now, but I've got to leave in a little bit so I won't finish until tonight or tomorrow. Thought this was a great chance for an upset. The '02 Kings were legit and really good for a 4-seed, and I feel that the 2003 Spurs are the weakest 1-seed.

11 2009 San Antonio Spurs

Preview: The 2002 Lakers finished with a 58-24 record and helped complete a Laker 3-peat. Most people call them the weakest of the 3-peat, as they had a lot of trouble getting past the 2002 Kings. Nonetheless, they were champions and have Kobe and Shaq both in their primes on this roster. Just having 2 of the top 10 players in their primes makes this team dangerous.

The 2009 San Antonio Spurs went 54-28 before losing in the 1st round for the 1st time in Duncan

These '03 Spurs series have reminded me how "meh" Ginobili was in 2003. Which makes sense and is understandable since it was his rookie year. A 25 year old rookie, but still.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8343361&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 20pts/16reb

Recap: The Spurs stun the Lakers in Game 1 giving the Lakers their 1st loss of the tournament. The Spurs played tough defense, and at a level the Lakers had not previously seen in this tournament. Tony Parker had 24 points with Kobe guarding him primarily, while Duncan added 20. Kobe struggled scoring just 14 on 5/15 shooting.

Player of the Game: S.O’Neal 35pts/14reb/4blk on 13/21 FG and GW

Recap: The Lakers take a 2-1 lead in a thrilling Game 3 victory. The Spurs controlled most of the game playing tough defense again, limiting the Lakers to 37 at halftime and 59 through 3 quarters. But in the 4th O’Neal had enough, Shaq scored 18 of his 35 in the 4th including the game winning finger roll. Spur’s Parker had given the Spurs a 1 point lead with a jumper with 5 seconds left, but Shaq was not done. What was more remarkable is he also went 5/5 from the FT line in the 4th.

Game 4: at Spurs 95, Lakers 89

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8343417&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 17pts/9reb/6ast/3blk on 7/12 FG

Recap: The Spurs and the Lakers go in another thriller in San Antonio. This time the Spurs come in top with tough defensive stops near the end and they did not allow O’Neal to dominate. Duncan had a great all-around game while Tony Parker added 26pts/8ast. O'Neal getting a bit frustrated with Kobe Bryant at this point.

Both teams higher the minutes of their stars as the series is tied up in a close 2-2 that can go either way now

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8343424&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 27pts/19reb

Recap: The Spurs stun the Lakers in Game 5 in Los Angeles. The Lakers led by as much as 15 points in the 1st half and played good defense holding the Spurs to 42 at halftime. But in the 2nd half their defense collapsed, the Spurs routed them outscoring LA 69-43 in the 2nd half as Duncan and Parker both had huge halves. Both finished with their best game of the series and that is what it took to win it and close up on winning the series.

Game 6: at Spurs 110, Lakers 87

Box Score:http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8343426&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 18pts/12reb/6blk on 9/16 FG

Recap: The Spurs stun the Lakers in Game 6 finishing the series off. Lakers once again kept it competitive in the 1st half but the Spurs just ran away with the game in the 2nd half. O

11 2009 San Antonio Spurs

Preview: The 2003 San Antonio Spurs finished with a 60-22 season. They then went along and won the NBA Championship. Many would call this the weakest Spurs team but I would call it the strongest. It featured Tim Duncan at his peak, winning his 2nd MVP award in a row. In the playoffs they knocked off the 3 time defending champion LA Lakers in route to a title. They were a strong defensive team while being very good on offense. All the important pieces of the Spurs championship runs were present on this team: Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, and Robinson.

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8886781&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 28pts/9reb/7ast

Recap: The 2003 Champion Spurs take a 1-0 lead in the series. They got off to a quick start and held of the run at the end of the game by the 2009 Spurs. MVP Duncan was too much for his counterpart going 28/9/7 while holding 09 Duncan to 6/16 shooting. The 2003 Spurs had a balanced effort with 6 players in double figures.

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 31pts/11reb/3blk

Recap: The 2003 Spurs take a 2-0 lead in the series and this time they did it with strong defense. They held their 2009 counterparts to just 33.3% shooting and just 33 points in the 2nd half as nothing was going for them. MVP Duncan led the way again with 31/11 as he has been too good to stop for now.

09 Spurs higher the minutes of their stars down 2-0

Game 3: 03 Spurs 91, at 09 Spurs 88

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8886785&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 21pts/11reb

Recap: The 2003 Spurs take a 3-0 lead in the series as they are looking forward to reaching the Final 4. This one was tougher as they trailed by 10 at halftime but had a strong 3rd quarter to overtake the 2009 Spurs. Both teams played great defense but the difference was rebounding as they outrebounded the 2009 Spurs 62-47 thanks a lot to David Robinson who has been the x-factor for the 03 Spurs this series giving them the edge inside.

Game 4: 03 Spurs 94, at 09 Spurs 83

Box Score: http://whatifsports.com/nba/boxscore.asp?GameID=8886794&nomenu=1&teamfee=-1

Player of the Game: T.Duncan 26pts/12reb/3blk

Recap: The 2003 Number One Seed San Antonio Spurs advance to the Final 4. They were led by another strong performance by their MVP Tim Duncan as he anchored another great defensive performance holding the 09 Spurs to 83 points including just 33 in the 1st half. The champion Spurs were too much for the 09 Spurs and look like a strong contender in the finals.
