View Full Version : WIS Rookie Seasons Draft

Rookie seasons only.

Notes:

1) The draft will run from 54-55 through 12-13 (I don't have anything against pre-shotclock player seasons, but including them could potentially cause confusion).

2) ABA seasons are permitted (though if there's overwhelming opposition, we can limit the ABA to 74,75,76 or whatever we collectively decide, or potentially eliminate it entirely).

3) There's no salary cap. Here's the link to search for players:

Player search: http://www.whatifsports.com/nba-l/playersearch.asp?pg=1&pos=6&season=1954-55&season2=2011-12&sal_min=239000&sal_max=99000000&format=2&showsecondary=1&sb=1&order=1&max=500&searches=-1&replacesearch=-1

10-12 members, as per usual, seems to be the sweet spot. Post in this thread if you're interested, and after we've gotten enough members, I'll randomize the draft order. I think we'll draft 8 rounds, and then you can fill the rest of your roster with undrafted free agents.

4) I'm not going to place a time restriction to begin with, though if people are taking an incredibly long amount of time it might be necessary. BTW my PM box is full, so perhaps somebody else should volunteer to send reminders/receive selections.

5) Remember, rookie seasons only!

It would be a good idea for everyone to put their time-zone so we can set times to do the draft because they usually drag on for about a fortnight and by that time everyone loses interest.

I'm GMT, the time here is 23:21

Okay, added everyone (I think) and posted all time zones in the OP. Let me know if I missed you on either count.

I'm going to give this a few more hours to see if we can get 2 more people to go to 12, but 10 is fine (and perhaps more manageable). I'll randomize draft order after the members are finalized.

Time Zone = BST (British Summer Time) GMT+1

Not that much, if you sign up it gives you an option to add a 'dream team' or something of the sort. After choosing players here, just add them to that team, and let us know your team name.

Somebody else here can probably explain better, since only one draft I've participated in has actually finished and gotten through play lol (FWIW Twiens won like 90% of his games in that league).

You would probably want to set your depth chart too. I don't know about the rest of you, but I normally go 7 or 8 deep and I run up the minutes. Seems to work out best. Not sure if that's the same when most of the team is even

I'll follow. Don't have the time tho

http://arhe.co/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/shaq_rookie-560x350.jpg

Season: 23.4 ppg, 13.9 rpg, 1.9 apg on 56.2 %FG/58.4 %TS in 37.9 mpg

The big man from Louisiana state came into the league dominating with his raw strength, breaking backboards and posterizing the premier centers with his thundering dunks. Shaq was the real deal, finishing the season 8th in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 2nd in blocks, and 4th in field goal %. The team narrowly missed the playoffs with Shaq at the helm but the big guy’s success would only improve in the upcoming years.

The greatest point guard ever. A game without flaws, shot really well from the field (especially for a guard), got to the line and shot a good percentage there, the best playmaker of his generation and probably any, given how for he was above his peers. He rebounded really well for a guard (albeit pace inflated his raw totals).
Then I saw his WIS estimated turnovers.

so, no explanation necessary

I wanted to pick a C first and I thought there could be a slight chance D-Rob or even Hakeem would be available. Evidently not, but it's okay because I now have two of the best passers in Magic and Larry. My theme is now ball movement

Edit: added season stats for both

Magic: 18/7.7/7.3 on .530 shooting, Finals MVP
Bird: 21.3/10.4/4.5 on .474 shooting, Rookie of the Year

Was debating between two players, but I'll select... Elvin Hayes.

Didn't even win ROY. However, he had a great statistical rookie season, gives my team a low post scorer, and his defense is overrated on WIS.

SF - Larry Bird
PF -
C -

I wanted to pick a C first and I thought there could be a slight chance D-Rob or even Hakeem would be available. Evidently not, but it's okay because I now have two of the best passers in Magic and Larry. My theme is now ball movement

Edit: added season stats for both

Magic: 18/7.7/7.3 on .530 shooting, Finals MVP
Bird: 21.3/10.4/4.5 on .474 shooting, Rookie of the Year

http://www.alleniversonlive.com/wp-content/gallery/hair/afro.jpg
Allen Iverson
1996-97 Rookie Year: 23.5 ppg, 7.5 apg, 4.1 rpg on 41.6 FG% and 34.1 3PT%

http://www.behindthebasket.com/storage/post-images/SOneal%20AIverson.jpg
While it's often thought that the Answer and the Diesel would be incompatible on the same team due to their ball-dominant natures, Iverson played along the perimeter a lot more and tallied one of his highest assist totals of his career in his first year out of Georgetown. AI will undoubtedly be able to find the perfect balance of scoring and deferring, like Kobe Bryant, Penny Hardaway, and Dwyane Wade.

Sorry, my pick fell whilst I was asleep. Anyway I belatedly pick Chris Paul (assuming that's okay) because he's the best pg available and numerically the best pg of all time by advanced metrics.

This may be a collosal error because he was a rookie in a low %, low pace league and so his stats aren't that impressive out of context.

How the f**k does rookie Tyrus Thomas have a 100 defensive rating? Bill Russell's best defensive rating on WIS is 90.

And, that begs another question...why did WIS downgrade Russell to a low to mid 70's defensive rating player? That's messed up.

I have a vague recollection of 8 rounds (and if I recall/understood correctly fill the rest with "not drafted rookies" which would allow for duplicates occuring on different teams) but I can't see anything to back that up (either it's been edited, I've made it up in my head, or I'm half asleep and missing it; quite probably the middle option).

We're presently in the 6th round.

Are 2012-13 players eligible? The opening post suggests they are but (I believe) they haven't been in WIS database for most of this draft, and certainly weren't in the opening post link (which searched only for 55-12, I assume because '55 is the first year eligible and '12 was the last year available).

Any opinions/thoughts?

Should allow Shade's players to be redrafted, or leave them off-limits (I'm assuming the latter)?

Anyhow, for seeding I figure we can split the teams into 2 pools (A and B, randomized), and run a home-and-away round robin. Then teams B4/A5 and A4/B5 play a five game series, the winners facing A1 and B1 respectively in 7 game series while B2/A3 and A2/B3 play each other (the rest is pretty easy).

I nominate using 2-2-1-1-1 for the 7 game series (and 2-2-1 for the play-in round), let me know if you object.

Apparently we are finished?

I'm fine with the same last 4. As long as we have at least one guard, one forward, and one big because I still need a guy who can spot some PG minutes and I'm sure others have the same problem for another position.

If not, damn, I wanted Phil Ford. Was going to go with an all Carolina last 4 and Phil was on the top of my list. He would have been a truly great PG had it not been for injuries and, then later down the line, alcohol problems.

Not sure if you need an account. I think you do.

But...
1) Go to this link:
http://www.whatifsports.com/dreamteams/

2) Scroll down to "National Basketball Association (NBA)" and click on "NEW TEAM" You may need to delete an old team if you have already created the max of 3 Dream Teams.

3) Click on "click to draft" and draft your players. Search by inputting the first and/or last name. Or team or year, I suppose. Remember to draft the player's rookie season since that's what we are doing. It naturally sorts by salary, not year.
--Maybe you guys know the rookie season off the top of your head. I don't for most of them. What I have been doing is typing in the last name, highlighting the player's entire name when the search completes, right click, search google for, and clicking on basketball ref to check the year. Do as you please.

4) Enter your "Teamname" and "Home Arena". I don't believe either has a role in how your team performs. You can change your players if you accidentally draft the wrong one later. However, you can't change your name and arena without deleting the entire team.

5) It should take you back to:
http://www.whatifsports.com/DreamTeams/default.asp
Which then you find your team, click on the green + sign, and scrimmage and change line ups.

6) To change your lineup, just click on "Edit Depth Chart", which is located under your team. I think you need to allow pop ups if you have the should not be spoken word on ISH installed in your browser. Self explanatory in there. Move players around, and adjust the minutes until each position has 48 total minutes played. Click on the "Set Depth Chart" at the bottom of the page when you're finished.

7) Then to practice, there's the "Historical", "Dream Teams", and "Search" tabs. Historical to play a real team from the past, "Dream Teams" to play a team you created (similar to the one you just made, except I don't think you can play your own team), and search to play a specific team, including other people's dream teams. That's the one I would use to practice against the lineups of other people in this league.

8) To do that, click on the "Search" tab, under "Type", change "Historical Teams" to "Dream Teams", then type in the team name. Obviously we will need to post our team names in this thread after we are done creating them.

9) After you choose the opponent, you can click on the blue arrow to swap the home to the away and vice versa. Then check "Generate Play-by-Play" if you want a PBP and hit "Play Game". The result should pop up with the box score. Sim as many as you want or change opponents by click "Change Away" or "Change Home", depending on which is which.

That's about it. Although we can't truly complete rosters until the last 4 are decided. You can still create your team now and edit the last 4 later. Like I just threw in 4 random Z letter players for now so I could step by step this.

Obviously if you want to edit later, find your dream team on the dream team page (the link I posted twice), click on the team name, and then "x" the players you want to remove and redraft.

Oh, I've done all that before with both of my teams (this one and an older one from a different draft). Just last night I lost 4-2 to the Heat with this rookie team. I thought we were setting up a league. I had Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, Luke Walton and Kwame Brown though so I'll switch them.

My teams called the Magic Birds

Ok, what're your team names? So far I have:

Twiens -
iamgine -
MisterAmazing - "The Big Aristotles"
Owl -
jcsrplumply -
Beatlezz -
hangintheair - "Brookie"
fpliii - "fpliii-Rookies"
IGotACoolStory - "Frosh"
KobesFinger - "Magic Birds"

Once I get everyone's team name, I'll start simulating.

Reminder—the tournament format is a bastardized Olympics-NBA Playoffs hybrid:

Anyhow, for seeding I figure we can split the teams into 2 pools (A and B, randomized), and run a home-and-away round robin. Then teams B4/A5 and A4/B5 play a five game series, the winners facing A1 and B1 respectively in 7 game series while B2/A3 and A2/B3 play each other (the rest is pretty easy).

I nominate using 2-2-1-1-1 for the 7 game series (and 2-2-1 for the play-in round), let me know if you object.

EDIT: Feel free to simulate until everyone posts his team names. You might want to adjust your rotations. Sim both home and away games to get a good idea of where you stand.

I used the players hangintheair mentioned (zeroed them out for minutes though). It's probably easiest if everyone uses the same four, but I don't really mind if someone wants to change. Up to you guys though.

First few simulations I was getting destroyed by team Brookie, and was having a tough time with Magic Birds as well.

Team name: Frosh

Messing around with my lineup now. Some games my team piles up 25+ blocks :lol Can't seem to get Oscar going... I was hoping he would be that dude, but some games he drops a triple double and the next he's 2-8 from the field. :confusedshrug:

Oh, I went with the 4 hangintheair mentioned.

Managed to improve the consistency of O. Now if I could figure out how to get Blake to stop shooting so damn much without killing his minutes (because he's apparently my x factor)... That would be nice. I'm going to wait for the rest of the rosters before I change my lineup again.
