Because YOU don't have to pay Kobe & the Lakers do. They obviously feel like it's in their best interest to keep him.

Chill out. Kobe will be off the books next year & can renegotiate a more Franchise friendly contract.

Pre CBA contracts... they were pretty wild. Rashard Lewis, 20 mil a year??? ridiculous. and at the time of the extension, the deal made sense for both the team and obviously kobe.

and to answer your question about decent teammates, when kobe was extended those 30 mil a season, that was the peak time all the haters on here kept saying, the Lakers are super stacked, blah blah blah. and they were able to keep that "super stacked team" dubbed by ISH even with kobes albatross of a contract.

Kobe probably brings in 100 million to the Lakers. The team has been over the cap since forever. You obviously know nothing about how the salary cap works.

The Lakers won 2 Rings & made 3 Finals appearances since that contract dude. It's worth it & you can't have it all.

The vast majority of teams could only hope their huge wasted contracts turn into Rings. Nearly a 3 peat.

No matter how half heartedly they still offered Howard $118 million.

Lakers don't seem as upset as Kobe haters with the contract.

I'm talking about NOW with the current CBA. Of course it didn't matter nearly as much with the old one. Now it does b/c the penalties are extremely severe. Also, the titles they won were under the old CBA so that doesn't strengthen your argument at all.

Actually, the lakers really DGAF about paying penalties if it's worth it. Everyone, including the FO knows MWP brings nothing to the table at this point, and the team itself is far from contenders. So why spend the money if they don't have to?

When were the lakers ever known to be cheap over potentially winning a title?

I've always been jealous of that team because they're willing to spend [when they have the potential to WIN] while the Jazz live off their sell out tickets with mediocre 1st or 2nd round exits.

Laker stans have no defense for this. He's freakin old, injured -- he doesn't deserve 30m. Almost no one in the NBA is worth that much of the cap. That also explains why the Lakers look like total crap and haven't been contenders last year or this coming year. Can't build a TEAM when one player takes up half the cap.

HorryIsMyMVP
07-09-2013, 08:42 PM
I'm not even certain that Kobe helped them "win 5 rings". Maybe 2 rings and even that is pushing it. What helped the most is the system the Lakers were playing and the overall depth of talent on those Lakers teams. Their bench players were equal to some team's starters.

Even if Kobe made less they'd still be over the cap. It's not like his contract prevented them from being contenders. They made 3 finals appearances and got 2 rings. I guarantee you any team in the league would pay 30 mil for that. It's the final year of his contract too, what do you expect? Such a stupid thread. Can't believe there are actually people that think him making 10 mil less would make any difference.

Goldrush25
07-09-2013, 09:19 PM
This is a bad topic. His contract is guaranteed and was signed years ago. The players union would never allow players to be paid year by year based on their current worth. Kobe isn't worth what he's being paid now but tons of players aren't worth their current contract. Other players are underpaid. It's just the way it is.

Kobe gets paid that much because his contract, along with Garnett and some others were grandfathered in with the new CBA. And honestly, if you base it off the revenue he brings into the team it's probably not enough. You don't think the Lakers signed that 3 billion dollar network deal with time Warner because of Steve Blake do you?

Lots of ignorance in this thread even outside of the childish arguing about Miley. :/

Kobe is actually underpaid considering the immense value he has brought to the Lakers. He easily makes the team more than $30 million a year. He led the team to 3 straight Finals and won back to back rings. This is all in addition to the fact that this contract was signed under the old CBA. Nobody obviously knew what the new CBA would be like years ago. Come on now...seriously. :kobe:

the point isnt that he doesnt earn the lakers more than he makes. The point is that it is really hard to put together a 12 man roster for 58 million when 1 player is making over half of that. Unless you can get something for the other large contracts when the leave (trading expirers for picks, etc), it leaves you in a very inflexible position. Even if they amnesty their second biggest contract, they still cant actually sign any players to help their roster.

Funny how sensitive kobe fans are. I dont think anyone blames kobe or thinks hes not worth it (in a bubble). But the fact remains that the reason the lakers are unable to improve this roster for next season is because of this contact.

if he was making 15 mil, they could amnesty pau and have about 13-14 million to go after a free agent. Thats the point. Is kobe the only problem with this rosters cap? No, but when he makes over half of the entire roster cap, its obviously an issue.

I'm not even certain that Kobe helped them "win 5 rings". Maybe 2 rings and even that is pushing it. What helped the most is the system the Lakers were playing and the overall depth of talent on those Lakers teams. Their bench players were equal to some team's starters.
I really hope this is a troll or at the very least a joke

right, I dont disagree. I dont really agree with the OPs premise, but this thread is full of people saying "he earns them more than that" or " he won them 5 titles" (if thats how they hand out contracts based on past titles, they should still be paying magic). Thats not the point. Their flexibility is ****ed by having any player make over half the cap. They cant do anything about it, but it is the reason why they cant do anything.

Again nobody knew the rules of the new CBA years before it was created. They can't just nullify contracts signed years ago because the rules now are more restrictive. Well they could once with amnesty but amnestying Kobe would be franchise suicide for the Lakers. Come on now.

And "Kobe fans" have to constantly diffuse all the ignorance and misinformation that is continually spouted especially around here. It's almost a job unto itself. Lots of ignorance ... :kobe:

there is a difference between acknowledging the role this contract has in hamstringing the lakers and being able to do anything about it. They cant do anything about it. It doesnt mean that it isnt resetting any chance of roster flexibility.

They just swung for the fence with Dwight Howard on the roster & it flopped. Doesn't get much better than that on the Free agent market.

Now Howard walks & then you amnesty Pau & I doubt any other free agents can make this team a contender.

May as well reward the 2 guys (Kobe/Pau) who got you 2 Rings(nearly 3 peat) than bringing in Free agents ........Big contracts for Josh Smith & Monta Ellis ?

More mediocrity?

Both Kobe & Pau will be off the books next year so no need to worry about the Buss' money/Lakers future.

There are no superstars that the Lakers could land for 13-14 million. And asking Kobe to take a severe pay cut(and I mean severe) 7 years ago when he signed the contract doesn't really make sense. The Lakers didn't know about the luxury tax rules and they couldn't have assumed the amnesty rules. When he was making 30 million the Lakers were already so far over the cap that it didn't matter. Knowing that we know now it's easy to say what they should have done, but I don't even see the point next season they'll have cap space. One season isn't going to make a difference.

again, I am not saying they should have done anything differently. Or that there is a way to fix this. Or that kobe is to blame or any of that hogwash. I am simply pointing out that the reason they have to room to improve for this coming season has quite a big to do with his contract taking over half of the cap.

Also, what do you think he will do next year? How big of a paycut is he willing to take? Is he willing to be the 2nd highest paid player on the team? Because I dont see it.

Kobe's $30 million contract is hogging up a ton of the Lakers cap and is hamstringing any moves they can make now. It's been acknowledged all over the place. And ... ? Nothing can be done about it. The Lakers aren't serious contenders this year and wouldn't be even if they amnestied Kobe and used that money to sign other players.

It is what it is. The Lakers are stuck this year but can make some real noise next offseason. Kobe's contract is a non issue and a scapegoat. :kobe:

I think the Lakers could have improved if they would have been smarter with their draft picks and FA signings. Plus they pretty much got screwed on the Chris Paul trade which would have changed the whole dynamic but I digress.

As far as Kobe taking a pay cut it really depends on his level of play and if the Lakers can show that they're serious about building a championship team. He's made tons of money and I would think he's willing to take a pay cut, maybe even vet's min to play for a championship team, but not if the Lakers plan on going no where. If he asks for a ridiculous contract then the Lakers should just say thank you for your services and part ways. I don't think it's about being the highest paid for him, but it's about contributing and making sure he leaves the team in good hands.
