Call it an over reaction if you want to but I feel I have a good eye for talent, anyway, just saw a few Summer League games and I gotta say hopefully the Hawks matched Teague's offer sheet to trade him cause damn they coulda save a buck or two by letting him go cause this kid Dennis Schr

It's not just you, pretty much every hawk fan has noticed that we may have a very great player on our hands
First time i've heard someone compare him to gary payton though, most comparisons i've heard have compared him to a rajon rondo that can actually shoot.

Teague is a good player etc, not a $42M player (God bless him, he got paid) but I don't see special or that "it" factor like I see in Dennis.
Congrats Hawks, y'all gonna have a helluva player on your hands for awhile.
I thought it was 32million which is a very fair price for a player of Teague's quality, Teague is a starter in this L and will remain one most likely this upcoming season.

8m per year for Teague is a steal. If this kid will develop into a great player, you can still trade Teague. He is young and really a solid player.

All jokes aside, can he knock em down from the perimeter? Have you seen enough of him to determine whether he's a score or pass first type guard?

Who knows what Danny Ferry is doing?
Is he trying to win? Then why not keep Smith and Pachulia and add Millsap so we are really strong at the bigs with Smith, Pachulia, Horford, Millsap and go after Miami the way Indy did, with a strong inside game? If Smith doesn't work out, then trade him out the way we traded out Johnson in the middle of his contract.
Or is he trying to clear out the roster and rebuild? If so, then he should have let Teague go and not re-sign Korver and play Schroeder, Cunningham, Jenkins to see how good they are and develop them?
Who knows.
There is still cap space to add another player, but even then how much of a difference will it make.

He was shooting 40% from 3 in the German league. Not very good off the dribble though, mostly catch&shoot. His form looks like some kind of a strange 2k13 set shot, if he cant adjust it, his shooting will mostly be from spotting up.

Could you guys have afforded to dish out 14 million for Smith and then an additional 9 (correct me if im wrong on the 9) to acquire Milsap?

Yes, because Millsap took Devin Harris's spot and we had Bird rights to Smith.
Also we could have gotten Millsap through a sign and trade, so there were ways to get him.

I think even now we have enough cap space to take on Kris Humphries' expirer. We would be over the cap, but under the luxury tax. Would be a solid backup at the 4 and 5 behind Horford and Millsap.
I'm not sure what Ferry is planning on doing.

Because Smith isn't worth 15 million a year and has a low bb iq? Pachulia is coming off a serious injury? Because they don't fit with the new coach?
If Smith doesn't work out, then trade him out the way we traded out Johnson in the middle of his contract.
Than you don't have the money to make the other moves you made if you have him taking up 1/4 of the cap space.
Or is he trying to clear out the roster and rebuild? If so, then he should have let Teague go and not re-sign Korver and play Schroeder, Cunningham, Jenkins to see how good they are and develop them?
Teague is a 25 year old vet. He fits in either a rebuild or a team shooting to compete which appears to be what the Hawks are doing with Millsap, Horford, Korver, Williams, Deshawn and Teague. Look like they could still use some more vets to fill out the roster though.
Who knows.

Depends on the player.
we could have gotten Millsap through a sign and trade
Assuming the Jazz wanted to cooperate.

I'd think they'd look at more size to replace Pachulia with a small starting front court.

If the Hawks were going into full rebuild mode, better to have done a sign and trade of Teague to Milwaukee for some draft picks and a trade exception, play Schroeder, lose a lot, and then try to get Wiggins and spend money next season in free agency.
Which is what Utah is doing - got draft picks for taking on Biedrins and Jefferson, will play Favors and Kanter, will lose and will try to get a high draft pick next year and then spend money in free agency.

Not sure DuMa even saw Gary Payton play, maybe some utube clips but trust me Dr Ice, the way this kid gets into other PG's chests, slides his feet either beating them to a spot or staying with em, with his arms spread wide, up in the air, or back, and the crafty way he pretends to help defend off his man then jumps back to guard his man in anticipation of a pass being made back to his guy is uncanny cause sometimes a move like that jams up the ballhandler and they get stuck thinking they have an open pass when they don't.
He's a decent set shooter w a "flicked" shot which also reminds me of GP, not really his shot so much, just how both were seen as decent shooters initially.
He's smart w the rock, too on offense and what I like most is that he actually looks to make a pass to the post when it's there.
Hope they show Hawks on NBATV Training Camp cause he's gonna give Teague fits in practice and I'm sure Teague will go right back at him defensively as well, I just think his skills and IQ are better than Teague already, and Teague isn't bad at all, just not the type of PG that'll take a team to the top.
Trade Teague and get a vet PG to backup Schr

I totally fell in love with Schroeder watching him at the Hoops Summit, same as everyone else. Then went nuts looking into him, and came away even more impressed. He went from shooting 25% from three to 40% last year in Germany, which perhaps is an outlier, but looks like real progress.
I'd never heard the Payton comp, but in a lot of ways Payton does have a lot in common with Rondo. Similar size and athleticism, similar off kilter offensive games. Wrecking balls defensively. Obviously Payton has a more offensive persona. And his jumper, while not great, is clearly a notch above Rondo's. I had written a huge mock draft prior to the lottery even being picked, where I do this gimmick where I guess who will go when, then what I would do if I were the GM, and I personally had Schroeder way up the board. Like fifth IIRC. I like his upside more than any other PG in this draft.
All that said, I did watch him in the Summer League this week. And there's a ton of work. He's got a great defensive motor, and physical traits, but man he's a mess in terms of fundamentals. He had his back to the ball. Totally lost track of his guy a few times. Turns his back on the ballhandlers he's guarding in transition, like he's being completely turned around, like he's playing cornerback. A lot of this stuff is certainly teachable, especially so early in his development, but man you have to wonder a little about instincts.
And the other thing I worry about is size. He does have those freaky broad shoulders like Rondo, which gives him that rediculous wingspan. And while he is young, and does have really good wiry strength, but Rondo is a freak athlete in all sorts of ways. And Schroeder you really have to hope develops strength wise a great deal still. He's definitely tough and stronger than he looks, but he'll be really hard pressed to go 80-100 games a year at 160 lbs, which is what I heard he came in at.
I do love what I've seen out of Bebe Noguira.
I completely understand the Teague matching. That deal is just too good a value not to match it. It reminds me a little of what the Nugs did with Nene a few years ago. His market dried up to the point to where the deal he was offered was too fair a market offer that matching him just made sense as almost like buying a house to flip in the current economy, and eventually they were able to flip him. Unfortunately the guy they got didn't pan out like they'd hoped, but it's a nice play for them. I'm sure Teague will be moved at some point as Schroeder develops. Fair deals with team control have some value, like the Holliday deal being moved this past draft. If you leave Schroeder overseas, and Teague blows up a bit, you've got yourself a young, affordable, controllable asset to sell.
I have a similar feeling about Milsap. It's almost hard for me to believe that he only got 2 years 19. I know he doesn't bring the specific skill that Big Al does with his post game, but at the end of the day Milsap was the better player consistently. Rebuilding or not, that deal is too good a value not to take. Maybe you trade him to a contender during this season even. I think that may have been the best value of the offseason.

Yah, Hawks have a solid 8-12 mil to spend. 8 technically, but they could waive non guaranteed guys like Stevenson. That doesn't count Noguiera though, but it does include Schroeder.
Interesting lineup they have now
Teague Schroeder
Jenkins Williams
Korver Cunningham Carroll
Milsap (thinking maybe they still bring I.Johnson back here)
Horford Noguiera
They still need an upgrade on the wing, as they have a bunch of role players and bad defenders there, but they don't look too terrible.

Jenkins and Jeff Taylor who the Bobcats took last year were my favorite two players of that ilk last year. Those sort of shooting defender type role players. Taylor looks great in summer league. And Jenkins too from what I've seen.
What I really want to see is if Noguiera and Horford can play next to each other. I sort of feel like they can from what I've seen. And I have this hunch they'll compliment each other well defensively.

Don't take this as a jab at Jeff Teague either, just stating what type of player he is and most of those assists in the above clips woulda been shots by Teague, clips was just to show how well he runs an offense, is heady, etc.
Just would've liked to have seen defensive clips in there, not just steals but body position etc, that's where I see the Payton comparison cause that's exactly what GP would do to ballhandlers.
Anyway watch the kid play if you're able to, gonna be nice, STEAL of the draft.

Nope. Tho I was in the stands for his first game against a better summer league team (and PG) and I didn't see anything that warrants a comparison to arguably the greatest defensive PG ever.

His defence was so much improved from game 1 to game 2 it's not even funny.
He will be better than Trey Burke or MCW by a mile.
GP is a crazy comparison. But given Hawks situation he should see significant minutes. PG position is a tough one to enter the NBA and play along with C imo.

he's not ready yet. hasn't adjusted his range out to the NBA 3 very well and forces the issue a lot. Of any position in the league, the jump in talent between summer league and the real deal is biggest at the point. If he were to start an NBA game tomorrow he'd be in trouble.
he has the tools though. and he has professional experience so his transition off the court should be smooth, hope he's a gym rat.
