No no that was him. The weight he put on made him slower and too much pressure on his knees so he dropped from 215-220 lbs back down to 205ish the following seasons.

Kobe came into the league at 178. The heaviest he has ever played at was 230lbs and that is HEAVY for his frame, I don't remember which season he was 230 but he cut back to 215-220 for a bit then in 2008 I believe he trimmed down to 205. And he specifically stated it was to recover his quickness, because you lose quickness when you increase mass no matter how strong you get. Old players with a lot of mileage on their joints in particular, also try to stay trim for longevity because the leaner you are the more mobile you are. If Kobe tried to gain weight at his age (which he won't, for all aforementioned reasons) it'd be nothing but a mistake - he'd lose what's left of his mobility, quickness and on top of that he'd probably be at increased risk for injury with the added strain on his joints.

178? Kobe was skinny when he entered the league, but I don't remember him being THAT skinny. I think Kobe said he was 200 when he was a young player.

Here's a few seasons where Kobe gained or lost noticeable weight.

2002-2003

The Los Angeles Lakers guard hit the weight room hard during the offseason, adding some 15 pounds to his 6-foot-7 body to bring his weight up to about 225. He said he wanted to be stronger this season and keep defenders off him.

2003-2004

At 205, he's 15 pounds lighter than he was a year ago.

"I've been through a lot of stress recently so I didn't really train that much [and] lost weight that way," he said. "But I'll pick it back up here. Phil wants me to be on the ball a lot more than I have been in the past, and to do that I have to be a lot lighter."

2004-2005

Bryant certainly looks ready, having bulked up to 230 pounds and spearheaded weight-lifting sessions and pickup games with the new Laker family for the past few weeks.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&id=1895217

2005-2006

After reporting to camp last year at 230 pounds, Kobe Bryant is a lighter 214 this season. Bryant focused on increasing his speed this summer and the results have been surprising, strength coach Joe Carbone said. strength coach Joe Carbone said. Bryant now is as quick as even the the NBA's fastest point guards, Carbone said with sprint times that matched those of Charlotte Bobcats rookie Raymond Felton who had the most speed of any player the Lakers worked out before the draft.

2007-2008

On his weight loss of 19 pounds, he said it was the first time in nine years he had weighed in at 200 pounds. "I started watching what I eat. I had something to eat, I think it was pepperoni pizza and grape soda, and I started feeling a little bloated. And I didn't know what that sensation was, and I tried getting out on the track and running and felt a little heavy, so I had to cut back a little bit."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2944034

Kobe had a career year at the time in '03 when he first put on a lot of weight, although he had his knee surgery after the season, which may have had something to do with extra weight. '05 weight gain wasn't as successful, and he again had injuries, I believe he played with plantar fasciitis that year. '06 weight loss obviously worked out very well for him and it was his best season up to that point, arguably his best even to this day. '08 weight loss clearly helped his game as well. Was quicker and more explosive than the previous year, better defensively than he'd been in years and slimming down at 29 in his 12th season may have added to his longevity.

Also, it's been said before, but some of Kobe's weight gains were highly suspicious considering how quickly he was able to gain the weight.

No, he put on the weight intentionally because he felt he was getting beat up too much. He wanted to get in the post more and felt the extra weight/muscle would help.

And that picture wasn't photoshopped, btw. I remember that training camp when everyone was talking about how big Kobe had gotten.

The poster who talked about weight and injuries and why Kobe pretty quickly decided to lose weight in favor of speed hit the nail on the head.
