I like players who can run a fast break instead of just finishing it, guys who do more than just score on it, but pass adequately too. The best are MJ, Wade, Worthy, Magic, and LeBron.
This may handicap big men; but then again, fast breaks are pretty much guards play.

Magic, nobody in the history of the game ran a break better
Jordan, like pretty much every other aspect of the game he excelled.
LeBron, just a freight train of speed and power
Iverson, lightning fast and could finish at the rim
J Kidd, great court vision
Worthy, he and magic were just beautiful to watch
Kareem (75% of the Lakers fastbreaks were because of his amazing outlet passes)
Westbrook will be in this discussion soon, atheleticism, speed and finishing ability are ridiculous.

Of course he's not even the best 3 point shooter, rebounder, shotblocker, stealer, passer, etc. :lol

I still think he's the best in fastbreaks though. Every time I see him on a fastbreak, I hold my breath expecting a masterpiece of epic proportions. Ending in a beautiful mesmerizing dunk or an amazing acrobatic layup. Often dunking on big guys and posterizing them.

I know your idol LeBron is good in the fastbreak but he's nothing compared to Jordan's fastbreak awesomeness. :applause:

I guess some players showcased it more than others, and it was mostly due to the type of offense they played in.

Magic and Worthy showcased it shitload more than others because that's the offense they ran. It also helps that Magic at 6'9 created so many mismatch issues and had great court vision, so credit is given to him as well. Not just anybody can run a break that way no matter what the coach draws up.

I'm not sure if I put Worthy on the list because he benefited from Magic more than any one player has in this instance.

Bron is an obvious choice for most, but while he's great on an open court he isn't as great as others when there's defenders in the way. Yes he's great but if it's not a dunk he has trouble finishing at times, which why some may have included Worthy on the list.

Kidd used to create breaks out of nowhere somehow. And he's not even a fast player compared to most point guards.

Are people forgetting how well Bill Russell ran the break? it was text book everything. From floor spacing, passing, having the proper timing, angles

Not as great at the fast break as Magic, but John Stockton was NOTORIOUS for doing this. I don't remember too many people doing it while he did (at least in the mid-90's; my late-80's/early-90's memories are shrouded by being 10 years or younger). Something I have mimicked on the court and love that Ray Allen (and Jason Kidd) have definitely kept alive.

Magic
Jordan
LeBron
K. Malone
B. Walton (outlet pass)

Looks like you were the only one to mention him, but his outlet passing and ability to nab that defensive rebound and have it shot out to a streaking wing before the other team knew what was happening had to have been amazing to see in person. I have only seen them in youtube videos, but wish more bigs would do this today (obviously Bill Russell, Webber, Divac and Sabonis did it as well, but none aswell as Walton).

Great topic.

C - David Robinson (ran the floor better than any center before or since)

I don't want to start a mini-controversy, but I would argue Hakeem ran the floor just as well as The Admiral did. Not better, but just as well. I know Robinson had elite athleticism, but Hakeem may have been the MOST athletic NBA player of all time (until LBJ hit the scene).

Also, props on dropping Cousy in there. The guard who set the standard.

I didn't say it's the best ever did I? It's MY selection. You could easily argue for Lebron to be at SF instead of Pippen, I do understand that. But growing up a Bulls fan i saw so many Pippen led fastbreaks I couldn't possibly leave him out. He could finish over ANYONE with his tomahawk jams, go for the sweeping layups with either hand or dish it off to his teammates at the exact right moment. No two-way combo has ever been more devastating in the open floor than MJ and Pip. They constantly stripped you and covered so much ground in the passing lanes that they were a constant threat.

Pip is more versatile at finishing than Bron.

Pip is also better at understanding timing and decision making. I've seen Bron give one to many bad passes or mess up a two on one situation because they tried to go for the highlight film play, instead of the correct play. At least compared to Pip in this instance.

Pip understood timing, spacing, and angles better.

They may not have always made an incredible play, but they made the correct play (by they I mean MJ and Pip vs Wade and Bron btw)

Me either. Wilt was blazing fast all right, and the Lakers, especially, had a torrential fast break... I always figured that we were seeing the fine hand of Bill Sharman.

But Russell was phenomenal at starting the break and fast enough that he could fill the center lane to either snowbird the finish or blast in the miss from outside. Russ was an awesome offensive threat at all times and gets very little credit for that side of his game.

Somebody else that gets 0 credit but was truly amazing at starting the break? Kurt Rambis. His court vision was astonishing, his outlet passes often went to an unexpected lane.... and they translated into ez buckets downstream

More spectacular doesn't mean better. Danny Green ain't stopping prime MJ/Pip.

6 fer 6 Finals > LBJ/Wade
This argument really fits the fastbreak discussion:bowdown:

Blake Griffin might be up there once he hangs it up... I've seen some crazy fastbreak dunks from him his whole career

So I went nuclear on these young punks. Yeah, 6 > 2 argument doesn't fit in this discussion but I added that to get a rise outta these cats and it worked but whatever.
MJ/Pip > DW/LBJ overall and on fastbreaks too. Don't hate the messenger.

And yeah, I started watching basketball in the mid 80s, first NBA Finals I really paid attention to was Boston Celtics vs Houston Rockets in 86.

Jordan and Pip ran the fastbreak beautifully. Both were so fundamentally sound on the break. Many times they would make 3-4 passes without the ball even touch the floor.

Wade and Bron are good. They tend to look for the lob a lot. IMO, Jordan and pippen were better at pressuring full court and running the break.

Jordan/Pip > Bron/Wade. It's close though.
