View Full Version : World Basketball Club Championship Officially Starts - NBA Refused To Take Part
Euroleague
08-05-2013, 07:34 PM
YEARS ago, FIBA World, all the FIBA regional zones, the NBL league of Oceania, the CBA league of China, the FIBA AfroBasket league, the FIBA Americas league, the FIBA Asia Champions league, and the Euroleague agreed to play a world club championship.
However, the NBA, despite numerous invites and even offers of $10 million to join in, REFUSED to take part in it. Because the NBA refused to play (Miami Heat, or the "North American League Champions" would be the team representing the NBA currently for instance), and instead only offered the NBA D-League champions to play, the Euroleague then refused to play, meaning the champions of Europe's first tier Euroleague and 2nd tier Eurocup (also run by the Euroleague) would not play.
So, FIBA Europe could only offer the champions of the 3rd tier European competition EuroChallenge (league Deron Williams played in), which is something like the 12th-15th best basketball league in Europe.
So....................the tournament was finally cancelled because no one had any interest in it. For YEARS FIBA and Euroleague tried to get it going, asking the NBA EVERY YEAR to participate in it and start it up. But the NBA refused every year.
Finally, FIBA and the Euroleague have said to hell with the NBA, and are going to start it on their own without the NBA. They have decided to reorganize the old William Jones FIBA Intercontinental Cup of Clubs.
The new FIBA World Cup for Clubs has been created and joined in the agreement are FIBA World, FIBA Americas, FIBA Europe, the FIBA Americas League, and the Euroleague.
The new World Clubs Cup will start this October. The champions of Latin America, Pinheiros Sky Sao Paulo, Brazil, will play against the champions of Europe, Olympiacos Piraeus, Greece, in a two-legged series that will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the home of Pinheiros, to make the games more competitive.
The games will take place here:
16,000 capacity:
http://f.i.uol.com.br/folha/esporte/images/11136303.jpeg
More teams will be invited in the future, if this is successful, like teams from the NBL ("Oceania League Champions") or the FIBA Asian Champions Cup ("Asian Club Champions") for example. They are starting with the champions of the FIBA Americas League ("Latin American Champions") against the champions of the Euroleague ("European Champions") because they believe those are the two best leagues, along with the NBA (the "North American League") that refused to take part.
FIBA said that they will continue to invite the NBA every year, but from now on the new World Cup for Clubs is going to happen whether the NBA is willing to participate or not.
Since the NBA refuses to play, despite being invited, FIBA World is officially recognizing the winners of this new tournament as World Club Champions, and the title of "world champion" will be official to the winners, and the claim of NBA champions as being "world champions" will officially be considered an illegitimate and invalid claim officially by FIBA World, since the NBA champions were invited, but refused to take part in the tournament.
So.......................the NBA is absolutely OFFICIALLY SCARED to have the NBA champions play against the Euroleague champions in an official World Clubs Cup.
This is the official club world championship trophy:

I love the NBA and been watching for 25 years now but I don't really blame the NBA.
Would you honestly want to send a Lebron-led team in international play? I know I sure as hell don't. They will lose with him at the helm.

Wouldn't it hurt the team the NBA sends there to compete by giving them a shorter offseason?
I know that association football has things like the Champion's League and all that good stuff. But you know... those competitions actually have a lot of prestige behind them. I doubt any NBA franchise cares about competing in this. I don't even think the Bobcats would accept such an honor.

Well, for Olympiacos, they play about 15 preseason games, then about 70 games during the season, then about half of their team has to play about another 15 to 20 games with their national teams.
So it comes to about 85 games for about half of the team, and about 100-105 games for the other half of the team.
The Greek League also is from October to June.

Well in the case of Olympiacos, a bunch of their players have to play at EuroBasket, so they would have a much shorter off season than the Heat would. MUCH SHORTER.

I understand that you're really passionate about international basketball, and we all know that it's a growing sport with many excellent players from around the world. But surely you can at least admit that the NBA is by far the greatest league in the world? You don't have Americans out there parading MLS like the Seattle Sounders could beat Manchester United or Barcelona.

That would not be true either. Champions League is a tournament full of teams from one country. Premier League is a season of clubs playing specifically against teams based in England.
The NBA would be the BPL and the Euroleague would be like Ligue 1. Let's be honest.

no. ligue 1 has one of the best teams in europe. nba is like the top 6 teams from the epl, real and barca from la liga, the top 5 from the bundesliga, top 5-6 from serie a, porto, shakhtar, cska, zenit, ajax, psv, psg, lyon, and marseille while the euroleague is like the mls
just like some euroleague teams win preseason matches against nba teams, mls teams have defeated chelsea and juventus in the past year.

Because he played 31 games in EL but you need to add games in Greek league and cup to see how many games he played.
Also in Europe there are more practices (I think Radmanovic said he doesn't want to play in Europe because he doesn't want to have practice 2 times a day) while in NBA you don't have time to practice because you're always traveling. In my oppinion 5h practice is harder than playing a game so I don't get why people think that players in Europe have it easier than players in NBA.

that is not how it is
in football, there is not one clear cut league with all the best talent like the nba in basketball
the best teams in the world are spread throughout a few of the top leagues in europe so a more appropriate analogy would say to take the top 30 teams in europe and say they played in a single league = nba while euroleague would be on a level to the mls or the colombian league

Yeah, Josh Childress said he thought it was odd how every American media person that interviewed him wanted him to talk about how the playing schedule in Euroleague is so much easier than in the NBA, where players have to play so much more.
Childress said he had full 2 a day practices in Olympiacos and that it was much more tiring and grueling than an NBA season. It's really just another myth that NBA only fans have created that NBA teams play a much harder schedule.
It's all part of the myths they try to create around Team USA.

This makes sense because Euroleague and the South American leaguse are pretty close talent wise so it will be a good competition. As for an NBA team it would be a waste of time, like making the premier league champion play against the MLS champion. It will not be competitive and not exciting. They had something like this from 1987-1999 in the McDonald's championship although it was not always the NBA champion who were set. The NBA teams won all nine tournaments. 9-0
This might be fun in the future but right now the NBA is so far ahead of the other league it would not be competitive.
I mean the Euroleague MVP and Final Four MVP is Spanoulis. The same Spanoulis whose team got eliminated by Nigeria in the Olympic Qualifying tournament. The same same Nigeria that lost to Team USA by 83 points in the Olympics.
The NBA champion against the Euroleague champion would be a similar lopsided blowout. Probably even worse. I mean at least the Nigerian team was athletic. Spanoulis and his Olympiacos teammates would have difficulty against a team from the local Y. Remember Spanoulis is the super scrub who averaged 2.7 ppg in the NBA. He is an embarrassment to his nation and his family. I feel bad for them. Really.

This is actually a decent idea for the future, not the present. Currently, the NBA as a whole is really vastly superior to other leagues. It's closest competitor, the Euroleague, is still way behind, not just in talent, but financially, and stability as a business enterprise. The other problem are the rules. What rules will govern the event? NBA rules or FIBA rules? Imagine an NBA team playing an entire season of games without the FIBA zone rules, and then suddenly meeting a Euro team whose specialty is zone defense? Or a Euro team used to playing it's own zone rules, and then having to play man to man more often vs explosive NBA players?
For this to be a real marketable event, the Euroleague and other leagues will have to draw more talent to their leagues with higher payroll, and a higher fan base. That doesn't look feasible in the next ten years, maybe 20.
An agreement on 1 standard rules of basketball will also have to be sat down on. Really, without the NBA, all this talk of a world club championship is just that, talk.

FIBA on the other hand is trying to be that but isnt. The NBA still has all the power and these two completely incompatible formats dont work well together. I mean the NBA isnt even a domestic league; it has a Canadian team. It is a private entity.

Would absolutely LOVE to see a real worldwide league emerge one day...
But as it is, it's more likely that this league would be the result of the NBA expanding rather than FIBA led efforts. It might start with an NBA team from London (since they've had all those NBA games there, they're clearly contemplating it as a long term plan), Paris, and then cities like Beijing and Rio.... They would have to rethink the schedules, obviously, but on the whole the risk would be worth it. Stern clearly believed in global expansion... it remains to be seen where Silver stands on this.

I only skimmed through the post, but I think I got what OP is getting at. I strongly disagree. Why should the NBA ask its players to be involved in a tournament that doesn't matter to anyone? I don't know if it was mentioned, but I'm assuming the players won't get paid. So you want the NBA, which has teams that pay millions to their players to play for them, to risk injury of said players just for a tournament? No thanks.

And you assumed wrong. FIBA offered $10 million to the NBA to participate, $5 million for the NBA, and $5 million for the NBA champions. So yeah, they would definitely be getting paid.
Unless you think $5 million for 2 games is beneath an NBA team.............

Like all the other posters said why would the NBA play in a scrubbish tournament with their best talent?
Football (soccer) is different, where the top world talent is spread through Europe but the top basketball talent is concentrated in one league and OP is dissing the NBA for them not wanting to participate in a down leveled competition?
This kind of stuff should be considered MAYBE in the far future where top basketball talents are spread throughout the globe. Not now.
Personally I don't think a Champions League format of basketball competition is ever gonna happen with the way of the NBA recruiting all the top talent. Let the D-League play in this thing, no problemo. They'll do their best to impress NBA scouts.

If that was true, then the NBA would play the tournament, dominate it and officially have the right to claim of world champion.
There would be ZERO reason to not accept the opportunity to officially have claim to the world champion title, that they have been bragging about for so long and that people outside the USA laugh at.
The ONLY reason to not accept this, is being afraid of losing.
Anyone that thinks the NBA wouldn't accept it, IF they really thought there was no way to lose, is an undeniable moron of the highest magnitude.

well I can understand why the NBA refused to take part in it. (if Miami lost a game it would hurt the NBA's reputation) Furthermore they already have enough games on their schedule and all the travel would be a pain in the ass.
However I think the NBA (and all other US sports organizations, the US media etc.) should stop calling their champions the "world champions". Even if there are no better teams or players anywhere else I think it's pretty disrespectful to any other league or organisation. The NBA and US sports media has no legal right to make that claim, only FIBA World does.
In the past, this tournament was either in non professional era (pre 1991) or it was just a one time event invitational (1996).
But now FIBA has finally made the ongoing professional official world championship. So the winner is the official world champion, and they invite even more teams next year.
The NBA has NO EXCUSE and NO CLAIMS otherwise now, since they were invited and refused to participate.
But without any question now, it will be a fake claim if the NBA and US sports media use the "NBA world champion" claim now. Because FIBA has the ACTUAL tournament now legally in existence.
The NBA has ZERO legal grounds to make the world champion claim now, and if US sports media still makes those claims, I am sure they could be sued over it.

The soccer comparison to this is not the Champions League its the Confed Cup. The NBA is already basically the Champions League. Confed Cup is a mini tournament with the Champion from each confederation and so it includes very weak teams from Oceania, Nth America etc and doesn't hold huge prestige.
The thing is, the European and South American power-house teams still take it seriously, because, unlike you Americans, they have respect for their sport globally. And soccer is a much more physically intensive sport than basketball with a shorter off-season. Players at the top clubs play about 60 games a season (or more in some cases), which means 2 90 min games a week, in which they run around 8-9km a game. Then every second year there is an International tournament that is taken VERY seriously, which means they get basically no off-season. The Confed Cup is on top of ALL that and still teams and players take it relatively seriously.
The truth is the NBA is arrogant, soft and disrespectful in this regard and should stop calling the champs "world champs" when they're too soft to show up for a tournament they reckon they'll win at a canter anyway.

The original Intercontinental Cup — officially known as World Cup for Champion Clubs — is a defunct competition gathering the best clubs from the continental federations affiliated to FIBA (therefore excluding the professional NBA teams). The Intercontinental Cup was actually a tournament intended to "officially" decide the best club of the world
In October 2013, however, the efforts of Euroleague and FIBA Americas to re-establish this competition crystallized in the "new" Intercontinental Cup, with the participation of the champions of Europe and America (extended in future editions with representatives from Asia, Africa and Oceania).

The last official edition of the "old" Intercontinental Cup was held in 1987. Between 1987 and 1999, the newly created McDonald's Championship, contested among different continental champions and a selected NBA team, replaced it as the "de facto" Club World Cup.

Oh, I'm sorry. The correct sentences would've been: All the World Championships taking place between the years 1987 and 1999 were won by NBA teams. I specifically exclude years where there was no World Championship. So to clarify: In years where no World Championship was played, no team did win the respective World Championship. Mainly because it didn't take place. So if I'm saying that NBA teams were World Champions from 1987 to 1999 I'm only referring to tournaments that actually took place. By no means I'm claiming that NBA teams won cometitions that weren't played. I also didn't want to give the impression that "NBA teams", in the sense of multiple teams at once, were World Champions at the same time. The term "NBA teams" refers to different teams winning the competition in different years, not simultaneously.
I hope this helps you...we all know you're big on semantics and making sense in general...YOU LYING PIECE OF INBREED REDNECK PSYCHOPATH SHIT!!!!!

But that's not what you asked. You asked how come they won it every year between 1987 and 1999.
technically YOU ****ING LIAR ****** (as you might put it), I said 'between 87 and 99' which does not imply every year.
It's a bit like saying Italy were world cup champions between 1934 and 1950 (which is true, even though they only won it twice in that span)

First of all, it's two separate tournaments. Not the same one.
Interoncontinental Cup was the original world championship for basketball clubs. Then after that they made the McDonald's Championship, which also was not named "World Championship" because that name already existed, proving what a moron dr. hee is.
Anyway, it was two different tournaments. The first one existed a long time, then ended, then the second one came, then it ended.
Now the original one started again just this year. It's not hard to grasp.
Yes, in the years NBA teams actually played, yes, they won the world club championship.
This isn't hard to grasp. So like the Spurs won it in 1999. Now Olympiacos in 2013.
And of course this is FIBA, so it's official. McDonald's wasn't sanctioned by FIBA as far as I know, so those are actually not official.
But yes, NBA teams won for those years. What the hell does that have to do with THIS tournament? NBA got invited and they REFUSED to play in it.
So what exactly is your point?

Because you added "every year" to it.
What exactly is your point anyway?
NBA teams won not this tournament, but something similar to it in what they had then. OK..................
What the **** does that have to do with THIS tournament? The NBA was invited and refused to participate. They have been supposedly invited for next year also.
All FIBA can do is invite them. They can't force them to play. But if you get invited to play and refuse to participate, you forfeit.
So what the hell is your point? They invited these teams and also the NBA, but the NBA wouldn't play.
Now, for next year they invited also Australia's league, Africa's league, and Asia's league, and they all accepted.
But the NBA, which is also invited for next year, has not answered. The tournament does not get voided because the NBA refuses to play. I don't get what your point is.

Just show me a post where I don't know the difference between Euroleague and Eurocup. For example, some guys said D-Will played in Euroleague. But I didn't. Wanna know why? Because as opposed to some inbred shithead living in a trash can in Arkansas with nothing but some newspapers to cover his body and his trusty Spanoulis action figure, I'm actually from Europe.
You're probably confusing me with the voices in your head.

The first edition of the new FIBA Americas and Euroleague Basketball Intercontinental Cup will take place at Arena Barueri in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the first week of October.
So they (FIBA) knowingly schedule a "World Championship" during the NBA's first week of training camp and idiots wonder why the US isn't taking part :lol
FIBA's purposely avoiding having the best players/team show up to prop up their lower level talent

Exactly. NBA teams already have red vs. blue shirt scrimmages, so the Intercontinental Cup is redundant.

Looks like the NBA is the league with some minor league level teams.
Yes but Bilbao is also in the Spanish league ACB and was 6th place and made the playoffs being eliminated by a Euroleague Final Four Team Barca. While Unicaja which was a Euroleague team and actually advanced to Top 16 in Euroleague was 9th place in the ACB and missed the playoffs.
So the national leagues are a lot closer to Euroleage than the Euroleague is to the NBA.
And must I remind Euroleague's record against the NBA the past 10 years.

Yeah but Greece lose to Nigeria..
