three little birds(def puts me in a good mood)
in no particular order, but rat race is def my favorite "in the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty"

I am a Bob Marley fan. He made some amazing music.

But fill me in, other than smoking hella weed and making good music, what else did he do to make you look up to him and want to model your life after him? I genuinely don't know him as anything but a musician and a bud smoker.

Bob wasnt just a weed smoking music maker... He was an inspiration.. he got shot trying to bring together 2 opposite parties vying for power in Jamaica.

He was really about that FREEDOM and if you listen to what he says in his songs?

you will understand the depth of the struggle that the underclass has to endure.

here is a video detailing his concert in jamaica where he risked his life of some political bullsh*t

bob marleys music has surrounded me my whole life. i grew up on reggae, and it was mostly bob, and that kinda irked me. there is probably no artist who is more of a face of one genre then bob is to reggae.

goat of goats, but its a shame a lot of his fans don't really listen to other reggae artists. kinda like eminem fans :D

One of the issues Im truly disappointed with black folks is our failure to promote Bob Marley.. Black radio made a conscious decision to shut him out because his message and look was so "radical" ... We had disco back in those days and I cant be mad at the disco talent (EW&F and others) but I blame black radio for not promoting Bob marley.. I was robbed and I am mad about that.. I go to concerts for Bob... Guys like barret (family man) and some of his former band members show up and I dont see any black folks there!! :( White people are more in tune with what Bob meant to the world than black folks.. Props to the white folks I see at the concerts  they know what time it is.. Blacks folks, we dropped the ball on a true legend :facepalm

okay, putting on my headphones for these!

you know, it just hit me... i wonder if a big reason i always liked the police is because of the way summers played rhythm guitar, bob-style. sort of like a steel drum with a softer sound and lower range.

I've been listening to Bob everyday for 20+ years. His influence on my life has been invaluable. He has not only made me a better person, but has also made me a more aware person. The man is a pure musical genius (both musically and lyrically). He is the only person I would call my hero and idol.

Much love and respect to Bob Marley. Not the king of reggae, the king of music, period!

To anyone else who may be interested in this generation of reggae, you may also want to give these artists a try:

Peter Tosh
Bunny Wailer
Jimmy Cliff
Jacob Miller
Toots and the Maytals
Desmond Dekker
The Heptones
Gregory Issacs
Beres Hammond
Lee Perry
Max Romeo
The Melodonians

Can't think of more right now, but there is also a huge list of one hit wonders who also made some great tunes. Bless

A few more I forgot to mention steel pulse, burning spear, and Barrington Levy.

Along with many of the songs already mentioned in this thread, I also love Trench Town Rock (just got done listening to it coming back from the gym)

"One good thing about music, is when it hits you feel no pain"

And of course the classics like Three Little Birds, Is This Love?, Could You Be Loved?, Kaya, Exodus, Iron Lion Zion, Buffalo Soldier, and Stir It Up.

I could listen to this stuff all day.

yup. Peter >> Bob. Peter was a real ass ngga

I think its easy to feel this way because Bob is so ubiquitous, listeners are now somewhat desensitized to him.

Both are great. No reason to worry bout ranking one over the other IMO.

I was just stating my opinion, musicians or music can't really be "ranked"

You are right.

Tosh was Malcom X to Marley's MLK, if that makes any sense. They've been talking about a Marley biopic starring one of his kids for a while now. Personally, I think a Tosh-centered film would be far more interesting.

Coming form a long line of Jamaicans myself via grand-maternal lineage, I think I would probably be uniquely qualified for the role of either a young Nesta or a young Peter Tosh. Hopefully the producer of such a project will reach out to me, because I would definitely be willing to pick up the phone and listen.

missed this... but that sounds great; i hope both pics happen. multiple pics, in fact.

dunno if ken burns (or whoever) is still making docu series, but he did one on jazz. why not reggae, too? it's got plenty of backstory and content IMO.
