View Full Version : Another Greek Basketball Export Completely Owned Outside of Europe

Former Olympiacos and Greek National Team coach Panagiotis Giannakis lets 1.3 Billion people down as his 11th ranked FIBA squad and Asia Defending Champion China National Team (of which he is the coach) lost to minnows Chinese Taipei (42nd ranked in FIBA, with 2 players over 6'7", and not even a real country) in the QUARTER FINALS of the Asian Qualifying tournament.

Far and away the most talented team in Asia with former NBAers Yi Jianlian, Sun Yue and Wang Zhizhi, his squad was ill prepared and poorly coached as they gave up lay up after lay up and uncontested 3 after uncontested 3. Chinese Taipei shot 65% from the 2 and 50% from the 3, 'very typical of European defense' observers were heard to remark.

This now means Asia's most talented team will not participate in the World Championships in Spain next year, setting the country's basketball development back a decade.

Ironically, much like Vassilis Spanoulis, coach Giannakis was a point guard back in his day.

not even a real country

Some would argue otherwise.

Far and away the most talented team in Asia

Iran might say otherwise.

Yes they would argue correctly because the REAL country is Taiwan, it is simply the butthurt Chinese who force them to use the name Chinese Taipei.

China's roster >>> Iran's roster.

1-this thread is based in fact.

2-interesting you mentioned Euroleague because he had a thread talking about China and their movement towards Euroleague basketball and away from American influence.

this thread shows exactly how that is working out. The Greek coach was supposed to take China (ranked 11th in the FIBA rankings, admittedly *jokes* rankings but a metric nonetheless) to the next level and have them compete directly versus the top European powers.

what the hire has done thus far has exposed how bad a plan that was and how a much taller, much more talented team with a much much much greater pedigree can get bounced in the QUARTERFINALS of the Asian qualifiers, a tournament they almost NEVER fail to qualify in, especially in recent history.

China can't even qualify for the wild card tourney at the end of the year. Half a decade down the toilet do to poor tactics and horrible execution. Watching the Chinese players look hesitant and unsure while their NBA bigs chuck 3s instead of bang inside against much much much smaller competition was painful to watch.

This team was horrible, and the coach has a lot to do with that.

reality of the situation my friend.

To be fair

1. Iran was bounced in the quarter-finals of the last championship and they have come back stronger than ever.

2. China has been on the decline since the retirement of Yao Ming, look at their horrible performance in last years Olympics. Still without Yao they won gold and silver in the past two ASIA championships and actually advanced out of pool play in the 2010 WC.

Remember when China used NBA coach Del Harris in 2004 they not only advanced out of pool play in the Oympics, the hardest tournament to advance out of pool play in and beat the defending world champions Serbia. Now with a Greek Euroleague coach they can't even advance to the semi-finals of the FIBA Asia Champions which is now officially the weakest zone tournament after the African teams strong showing in the Olympic qualifying tournament last year.

Chinese are good at everything they put their mind too, work insanely hard and have a talent pool of 1.2 billion people+basketball is one of their most popular sports. It boggles my mind that they can be as bad as they are for so long.

I dont understand how it's even possible.

Del really took them to another level.

To also be fair, China won in 2011 post-Yao, so talk of their demise has been greatly exaggerated (till now obviously, so much face lost, the coach really hurt the feelings of the Chinese people). Of course peak Yao = peak China, but they are still far and away the biggest and most talented team in Asia and should have done much much much better.

Giannakis was not even allowed to coach the team.

The Vice President of China's basketball federation controlled the team's players and its tactics. Giannakis was not even allowed to choose the players or the lineups, and even the plays or assistant coaches. No wonder China's national team is such a joke.

very typical of a Greek export.

put them in a leadership position and they are unable to lead.

Just like Spannoulis complaining about Van Gundy, here we have another Greek 'leader' struggling to earn the respect of the people he works with.

Oddly enough this never happened to other import coaches in China, just this guy, sure they had the same battles with the admin, but they got results, but then again, other basketball minds and talents are able to thrive in less than ideal conditions...the Greeks...well, not so much.

too bad their wasn't a category for winging while overseas, the Greeks would dominate this stat.

Exposing trolls?...that's cute, lets call it what it is the number 11 team in FIBA lost in the quarter finals to Chinese Taipei (with two players over 6'7"). the BIGGEST choke job in the modern history of China Basketball, setting their development back half a decade, and who was in charge?

but but err err umm, it was the sports federation people in China, THEY ruined it!

Lets have some accountability here.

Strange, since they already announced Giannakis is staying and will coach through 2016. You claimed he was already fired minutes after they lost to Taiwan.

So let's call it what it is....you are a TROLL.

Giannakis is a legend. He whooped team USA in '06, among many other accomplishments.

If you're going to bash European basketball I suggest you find another target.

The chinese need to let good foreign coaches take over. They actually have decently talented players but they play really dumb and naive basketball.

Pretty sure Giannakis is better than Mike Brown.
