Something about having Birds as pets has never sat right with me. It's not that I don't like Birds, it's just something about caging a creature that can fly feels wrong.

almost everything we do is harmful to life on earth, so i don't see this as a big deal unless the species in question is doing poorly in conservation status.
parrots are mostly very social creatures who thrive with caring owners. any good owner will want their bird to spend as much time out of the cage as possible... also, those cages are usually very large, and there's a high responsibility to provide adequate toys and to keep changing them up for the bird's healthy amusement.
obviously there are going to be plenty of crappy owners out there, but that's not my point. i would love to have a parrot one day. just won't be able to use teflon cookware once i do!

Whats the difference between a bird caged and chaining a dog up all day.. he coulda been running free as well.

I wouldn't own a dog if I had to keep it chained all day. I wouldn't own a large dog living in an apartment or condo either.

It really depends what kind of birds we are talking about. And the wrong purpose of choosing birds as pets and average human ignorance about it. Here's some pics of my falcons with all the freedom in the world.

Chickens are OK if you have the room to keep them.

I totally agree, we had a couple of birds when I was a kid and I feel pretty awful about it.
So cruel to lock in birds in small cages, you basically take away the thing they're made for which is flying.

Birds like parrots and cockatiels can be nice pets, my gf's family has a pet cockatiel and he never stays in the cage unless he goes there himself.
They are freaking annoying though, need constant attention :oldlol:

Birds, especially the intelligent species, are a massive responsibility. Unfortunately a large portion of owners don't know what they're getting into and the birds really suffer for it. Buying a Grey is a life long commitment.

Yeah, the birds life. Which can conveniently be ended at any point.

I'm cool with birds. Don't want them. You have to talk to those things and they are very high maintenance.

yes, but i think he was referring to how a decent human being would handle it, not a total douchebag. :)
What makes a birds life more special than a squirrel or a cawkroach?

To the due with the awesome falcon, what is stopping it from just dipping? Why doesn't it just peace out into the wild? I mean, what can you really do about it?
It's trained in captivity, which means it likely lost most of its sense of survival. The bird knows that it has a safe home and consistent, healthy food so it has no reason to leave for hunting purposes.

I'm guessing it's more of a psychological thing. The bird got trained to come back to a certain place for food, etc.

Proper training, weight management and other more complicated stuff. Training is based strictly on positive experiences. These birds are not like dogs or horses which want to please the owner and are capable of social connection, raptors are made to catch, kill, eat and rest and are trainable only because of their strong ''greediness'' for food.

You're only right on the consistent food part. The main point of falconry is to actually hunt with your falcon and to prepare your bird to be as mentally and physicaly strong as birds of prey in the wild. That means trying to make an ultimate hunter out of your falcon which equals very high sense of survival.

caging birds is fcked up IMO
the worst situations though are reptiles...people throwing 5 ft pythons in a little aquarium, the snake doesn't even have room extend or slither.
owning large salt water fish/sharks/rays/eels is also fcked up IMO. I used to be a salt water aquarium enthusiast, going to different stores I saw some really bad situations for animals. Small reef fish seem okay in a large tank, but some owners have a larger shark or something that only has room to go in a little circle its whole life, it's fcked up.

I have a family member that has quails and parakeets and some parrot he got for free off craigslist from some guy trying to get rid of it. He takes very good care of his birds but I f*cking hate going there. That damn parrot will fly and just sit on your shoulder or head. Not a big deal until it sh*ts or pisses on you.
He harvests the quail eggs for eating. They taste exactly like chicken eggs.

you would probably really hate that shit then :lol
its what you said but with 10,000 lb whales, just sitting in dark tanks for most of the day.. coming out only for a few hours to entertain and going right back in. Their top fins flop over and become limp from the inactivity.. and there among smartest animals in the world
It reminds me of the space jam scene where they show MJ just in shackles only playing to entertain the kids on moron mountain
