I've liked the NBA since around 2002. I only followed stats mostly for regular seasons since we never had cable and then I would watch playoffs. Of course I would always catch tmac if he was on abc or if I was at someone's house who had cable. For whatever reason I got really into the NBA during 2011 playoffs. During the 2012 season I began watching on streams and watched about 75-78 Heat games in regular season plus a but o other teams. Didn't watch quite as much this year but still a good amount. I'm still learning a lot about the game so my opinions are changing a lot in some ways.

Lol a biitchmade 27 year old begging a 14 year old to have his back. "Tell him something!"

What you don't realize is claiming you're 27 makes you look worst than being a lying fraud trying to prove he's knowledgeable. Because if you're truly 27, and this dumb and clueless, then there's no redemption for you.

I can believe he's 20. Maybe around 23 at the oldest. I mean, most ppl by the age of 24 usually don't even have the time or interest to troll to this kind of extent. It would definitely be sad, though.

I first watched in the late 70s, but games weren't broadcast that often locally or on national TV. I started watching regularly in the 79-80 season when all Celtics games were broadcast locally. Good timing, don't you think?

Kblaze8855
08-14-2013, 08:41 AM
Truth be told a person could easily be 19 and know the game. Even the games of players he missed to some degree. Ive seen Larry Bird play live....but my clearest memories are of games I watched recently on youtube.

IVe been on ISH reading since 00/01 and posting since 01/02. And I was briefly on the site many of us were on before ISH had forums. HTV. Which was maybe 2000. So 13-14 seasons with a few of these people left(Gobb for one...AP who shows up now and then...Crisoner). But even us who assuming we were at least 8 when we got here....have to be adults by now...

Really...how well do you remember the 06 Grizzlies first round series? I watched it. You likely did. What specifics can you give me? I dont have many. A few. Not many.

Well how do you think I feel about the 1987 Bullets/Pistons series?

Im sure I was in front of a tv when it was on. But I dont remember specific plays. Or who was hot. I just watched it and then it faded to nothing.

You really just get a feel for the people you see a lot. But you can tell who saw them and who saw highlights.

Its mostly in what they know of the guys history doesnt credit. LIke...the Kemp/Payton sonics. Everyone knows Payton and Kemp. You watched that team though...you know Payton was scoring a lot in transition and now and then on the block or a quick open jumper. And that half the time Kemp got hyped up pregame only to play 27 minutes in foul trouble and score 14 points 8 at the FT line. You watched that team...you saw Detlef and Hersey Hawkins as 2 of their more reliable halfcourt scorers. Detlef would be played through a lot. In the post...facing up. He might handle the ball up top and call a play. Crafty pass to an open teammate. Ball fake and a jump hook. Reliable jumper. He was almost as important as the 2 stars and he flat out took over a number of games down the stretch.

Its guys like him...Jeff Malone, Thurl Bailey, and Jeff Hornacek on the Jazz.....the European guy whos name I wont butcher who attacked the basket like crazy on RUn TMC. Anthony Mason being a point forward with handles and not just a rebounder and tough guy the way he appears to people in highlights. Brad Sellers who only gets mentioned as one of jordans scrub teammates that I remember as a 7 footer who was mobile as hell and played 2-5. Not great. But I liked him at times.

Those are the people who make it clear if you saw a team play for years and not on youtube.

But most of what we discuss here...the people we bring up? The major names?

Guys can see about as much as guys my age remember clearly on youtube if they care to do it.

Most just dont. Which is fine. Its only annoying when they dont care to learn...but still want to pretend they know something.

Like the clown who made this topic who now and then claims random white people from the 90s who played well as old guys vs people still in the league now couple make the league today.

If you dont know go learn. Dont...just pretend to know. These days knowing isnt that hard. Its a google away....

I'm gonna say around 1989 or 90. I was 7 or 8 years old so I wasn't a fanatic yet. I don't even think I had started playing it really. I still remember that I thought Scottie Pippen was the best player in the NBA lol. I liked it, but at 7 or 8 years old I don't know of anybody that could fully understand basketball. Like all the nuances of the game and what not. So now I'm 23 years in. I love basketball as a whole, but the older I'm getting the more I look at things from a coach's POV and not so much a fan of the players. I don't look at just the end result. I look at all the factors as to why the end result happened more than the end result.

Started watching the first year Jordan retired. I think it was '94? Was a hardcore fan from '95 until... 2011? Since then, my job has me working most nights, so I still love the NBA but have probably only watched 20 games total in the 2.5+ years I've been at this job. Still a diehard fan in how I feel about the game, but I don't get to watch/follow it as much as a casual fan, much less a diehard.

Edit -- 20 non-playoffs game. I ask off for the Bulls playoff games and the Finals

Exactly most games faded in obscurity over the years. Up until '04 I stayed up late to watch 3-4 games a week(EC games basically run at 1 am WC 3 am over here).

I only can remember very few RS plays and some playoff moments, but when I rewatch stuff it feels like I've seen that yesterday.

Detlef was awesome and I loved the Sonics back then, but kids here get indoctrinated to hate germans and as I was very young at that time, the detest was bigger than the appreciation for his game.

A friend of mine who only followed MJ back in the day acts like watching Kemp was watching an endless highlight reel and now watching Griffin sucks, because he has games were he doesn't do a flashy highlight dunk. I was really like wtf are you talking hearing that.

the European guy whos name I wont butcher who attacked the basket like crazy on RUn TMC.

Sarunas Marciulionis, when I started watching he fell off already and played for the Sonics IIRC.

I started watching in the 94-95 season, but that was also the season I started playing myself and didn't get most of the stuff going on. I was ten at the time. The 95-96 season was the first season I could grasp what those guys were doing.

Anyone who witnessed all the 90's saw probably the deepest level of talent the NBA has ever seen, 80's were pretty good too.

Prime KG, MJ, Mcgrady, Penny, Shaq, Kobe, AI, Grant Hill, Allen, Kemp, Payton and the list goes on and on...

I've been watching ball since 94. Jordan got me into the game and he was my favourite player all time up until the Lakers got swept by Dallas. After that series Kobe became my favourite player all time, mostly because I've gotten to see his whole career, unlike MJ, and because I'm a Laker fan for life now (became a fan of LA after Shaq got traded to Miami since I hated Shaq), so I really should have a Laker as my favourite player. I supported the Sixers, Wizards, and Nets after MJ left because of AI, J Kidd, and Jordan's return before becoming a Laker fan, but I think that's understandable since I was still a kid. I've been a Laker fan since high school and I'm 26 now, and the Lakers are my team for life now.

I started watching in 94, and that's why I don't make GOAT lists. It's so funny though, that a bunch of 16-18 year old kids on here make GOAT lists and act like they've seen Russell and Wilt's careers when they haven't even seen MJ or prime Shaq lol.

In between learning to count on Sesame Street you were watching Jordan play the pistons? By 7pm you were out cold still sucking on your moms tits. Get the fukk out of here with that weak bullshit

1991-92 was my true full season really following the NBA. I'll be honest around 1999-2007 I stopped watching because the NBA was becoming wack and I was just busy with life. I came back around 2007 full time. The NBA is still kind of wack, but I love the game of basketball.

I remember as a kid watcing NBA in the 80's and liking the Celtics. Probably because I'm white from Oklahoma and my Dad liked the team led by the white guy. <-- Sad... but those were different times.

I remember in High School when Michael Jordan came on the scene in the mid 80s to 90s. For the next 10-15 years MJ took over the planet. MJ basically had his own Sports Center time slot. Everyone with cable had WGN and could watch every game it seemed like. The MJ and the Bulls were the NBA.

After the second 3 peat I didn't really watch much until I started getting into the Mavericks and they drafted this kid named Nash and this funny looking German named Dirk.

30 or so years all told.
10 or so years as a kid casually watching what my Dad watched.
10 or so years of being obsessed with MJ like everyone else in the world.
10 or so years of being obsessed with Dirk and the Mavs.

Wonder who will be next and what will come in the next 10 years?

I've been a casual fan since 2004. The 0.4 shot was what made me a fan of the NBA. I've never really taken the step towards becoming a hardcore fan, mostly because in Canada we get full Raptors coverage (:facepalm ) and only the occasional good regular season games from other teams, and also because I enjoy watching hockey and tennis more than I enjoy watching basketball. I have to say that the statistics meta-game part of basketball is what keeps me interested in the NBA.

Hehe, you're getting old?! Try 50 years. I started following the NBA in 1963.

I saw every televised Russell/Chamberlain "battle" throughout the rest of the 60's.

Saw Gus Johnson a few times and got to see his spectacular windmill dunk a few times. No doubt that's probably how he broke at least one of the three backboards he broke.

Got to see Red Auerbach in action a few times before he retired after the '65-'66 season. Red was as entertaining to watch as the game was.

Saw Kareem in his early years when he was most dominant.

The showtime Lakers were the most fun team to watch. Nothing quite like watching Magic leading the break.

Seen a lot.............it's been quite a ride.

Then I started following the Heat in '05.

started paying attention, watching highlights of almost every game, during the 2007 season. back then, nba.com made me think that every team was worth watching :oldlol: . every team had at least one player worth checking out, like i gotta watch these t-wolves highlights to watch kg get 18-10 and the wolves to get blown out by 20.:lol

it kinda sucks that the more ive gotten into the nba, the more ive appreciated it, and specifically, the more ive gotten invested in the cavs, they have gradually gotten worse. their very best year was the year i paid least attention, and the year i finally get league pass is the year they are the third (i think) worst team in the league.

next year they should be better, and i wont have as much time to watch the games.

i probably started watching games regularly in like 2009, and i felt like i really started appreciating the xs & os in like 2011, rewinding plays to see how somebody got open, etc. then in 2012, like i said got leaguepass, i watched pretty much every cavs game.

This. Idiots in here talking about watching since they were 4. Yes, we all saw games when we were little kids. That's not what we're talking about here. You're not a hardcore fan who understands the inner workings when you're 4. 4 year olds aren't tracking stats and calculating metrics to judge player efficiency and really analyzing the game. 4 year olds aren't intellectually debating MVP candidates or power ranks or career legacies.

That's true. I don't think kids under ten are really gonna understand what a great assist is or appreciate a lock down defender. All they are gonna understand is when their team get's a dunk or a 3 pointer. Hell, I can remember watching the Lakers when I was that young, and I remember all the big names, but Can't tell you a whole lot about their games. Meh!!

Die hard fan since 1986-87 season. I was 10 years old. Watched every lakers game. If I was going to miss the game, I would set the VCR to record it. Yes at 10 I knew how to operate a VCR (knew how to set the timer and everything). Loved magic, worthy, Kareem, Scott and of course Chick Hearn.

At that age I played rec ball. And played everyday at recess. After school me and a group of friends would hop the fence at the school to get a game. If we didn't hit the school, we would play in my drive way or at another friends house. If I wasn't playing with my boys, I would shoot around in my driveway by myself emulating my favorite NBA players. I played or shot around everyday it wasn't raining.

My life at 10 was school, playing ball, nintendo, riding my bike and the Lakers/NBA. There was no internet or 500 channels on cable.

Been watching for roughly 26 years

That isn't true at all.

I was introduced to the game at 4. At 5 in 1990, got my first pair of Air Jordans. By age of 6, I was in my first basketball league, and professionally I could tell you the vast majority of the best players in the league by name.
There is a significant difference in knowing facts about the NBA and understanding how the game of basketball works.

If you understood how the game of basketball worked like zones, double teams, skills, etc. at like age 4-5 then you are probably a genus or a child prodigy and more of the exception to the rule rather than the general rule.

With my passion for starting lineups and basketball cards, by 1991 - 1992 I could tell you players stats and everything. For football as well, some baseball. Watching WGN and Sports Channel any chance I got with my pops.

I remember that summer watching a NBA entertainment Dream Team preview video all summer long. I remember watching NBA Jam Session VHS, playing NBA Jam, watching NBA Superstar videos non stop in my free time.

By 8 years of age in 1993, I was really into basketball / football / baseball. Was in leagues for ALL of them, playing the games year round. No internet, no video game system in my house, all I did with friends was play on our hoops, hit baseballs, and toss football around in winter.

By 10, I knew the game quite well. Between the ages of 11 and 13, given the amount of the game I played and watched, enthusiastically ... I was more knowledgeable about the sport of basketball than most of the current 16 - 21 year old posters we have here right now on ISH.

By 1999 / 2000, around the ages of 14 and 15, I had seen and been apart of so much basketball I was bored with the sport for a year or two. Burnt out on it.

Honestly, the youngest you should be able to starting counting from is when you are 12-13, I suppose then you can use logic when watching basketball.
Horse shit. Don't force your mental capacity for the sport on others, who picked it up more innately than yourself. I was raised in athletics, and wasn't forced either, it was a legitimate passion of mine. Along with movies, Batman, Ninja Turtles, and cartoons.

The game of basketball isn't as complicated as football, you're making it sound more intricate than it really is.

Double teams is self explanatory, RG. I didn't claim I understood the nuances and complexities of the four corner offense, or the triangle.

I understood zones. My father taught them to me. You play an area, not a man. It's not as complicated as you make it sound.

No I wasn't an expert on the game at ages 4 or 5, but given the amount I watched with my father, every year I learned more and more. The basics of the game are easy to grasp.

To say someone doesn't know the game until 12 or 13, is utterly retarded.

I was just giving examples off the top of my head. Either way, most people under the age of 10 do not understand how basketball works other than which team is which, 3 points, 2 points, dunks, Michael Jordan, etc.

It's good to see you understood the basics then but there is still a lot more to it.

It's why I said understand the game in a logical standpoint. The youngest I could see understand the game is like 8-10.

There's a difference between watching a guy make a certain pass and understanding he did it. The reasoning and real time decision making of the offense and the defense. Even today most people just watch what happens without really understanding the mental game of why people are doing what they're doing and how other players are baiting or forcing certain actions.

Bingo, that's when the full concept of what was happening totally set in from an understanding perspective (age 8 for me, 1993)

But I'm not going to sit here and act like between the ages of 4 / 5 - 8 I didn't understand what was going on. As if I was sucking on my mother's titty and was an infant who can't understand what is in front of him. Being a kid doesn't mean you're retarded.

Notice the thread title, how many years have you WATCHED the NBA. Not how many years have you been a complete nuanced, educated fan. Reading comprehension.

And yea, you have been watching since '86, and the first movie you saw was Nightmare on Elm Street at less than a year old (great parents FYI) and we're the same age? Right.

Nightmare came out in '84, you're claiming you were essentially watching the NBA @ 2 years old. What sounds more plausible, 5 years old, or 2 years old and memories of what happened and being able to actually process information?

Your boy LeBron is the same age as myself, and he claims to have grown up watching Jordan. That's why he wore his hero's number of 23. Would you claim he didn't see or process Jordan's impact on the game?

I was ages 6 - 8 during MJ's first three peat. The clone of MJ, Kobe, was 12 - 14 during MJ's first three peat. Is that too that deep of a significant difference in understanding of basketball?

Introduced in late 80's-
me: oooh what's this? Awww man that was cool. So many people watching at the stadium. Whoa!!! what's? who's that?

Started watching more regularly in early 90's -
me: Channel surfing, Oh...basketball is on, I'm going to watch this. Michael jordan and Magic are playing? Awesome! Warriors are playing? Awesome! Chris Mullin is cool.

Became more of a real fan of the NBA in the mid 90's -
me: Are you watching the finals? Hakeem and Shaq are going at it. Damn Penny is dope. Jason Kidd and Hill are siiiick! Co-ROY? Man, Hill was better though. MJ making a RETURN??? CRAZY!!! Man, he's going to dominate.

I'm in my 30's now, so make an educated guess.

I mean, I could have been a douche and said I've been watching since '86, but I had the common sense to say 92 when I became an actual hardcore fan.

The first movie I ever saw was nightmare on elm street. I was less than a year old. Does that count as being a horror fan since '84?
Reread the title. "How many years have you watched the NBA"

I was born in 2003, so I have seen a good amount of NBA history.

Been probably around 20-21 years now. I was 7 or 8 when I can remember watching it a lot (a LOT of Bulls games, since they were always on, plus the occasional Spurs or Mavericks game since I was in Texas).

I am sure I watched before then, but i wasn't as cognizant and have less full memories before about then.
