Before 2011 right?

Kobe and Duncan kept the era alive for a little longer. But their days are numbered.

No, after the Bulls were dismantled.

The Spurs have been winning 50+ games every single year (on pace for 50+ in 99) since that time. Even in Duncan's rookie year they won 50+. They've done with drafting, scouting, coaching, and a committed core. If there was a player who got of line in the media or didn't fit, they didn't last long in San Antonio despite being a good talent.

Even this year they still made the Finals and took it to 7 games. They are what every franchise should be like if you dislike the "buying" of star players.

But they didn't win.

Miami's "model" is winning out (and getting more popular by the second).

Is this thread trying to validate Costas as some sort of mastermind?

It's Boston's model, really. They did get talent through trade to get a title. The big difference for Miami is that they bought the talent, but I'm pretty sure it was the Boston Big 3 that started the influence.

Infact, the 11 Mavericks weren't a team that was built like the Spurs either, it was trades. Nor were the 09-10 Lakers. The 04 Pistons were group of players that nobody wanted either, but worked out in terms similar to the Spurs (more team chemistry, defense, coaching having the first say, etc...)

The Spurs are the only difference since the Bulls dynasty ended in terms of building. Miami doesn't have their consistency and we don't know how many they will win the future. It won't have a lasting effect with today's salary cap either.

He has some great insight on the game, IMO.

is getting more popular to casual fans and those who enjoy the spotlight more tha the game itself.most of them don t even know the basics of the game and how its played aka most celebrities you see in games.i hate the fact that they can afford first row seats and instead of watching the game the are busy with their phones

In terms of building, team chemistry, coaching, loyalty, etc... starting from the same team ? The Spurs are that team since the Bulls, so I guess he was wrong about that.

But they were veterans.

The Rockets did the same in 1996-99.

All the players on those teams had been loyal during their primes.

The Spurs are the last bastion of that kind of team.

I think the Spurs will be the last of their kind.

And I think the Heat fully realized the situation that Costas predicted.

Now every super-team imaginable has become "fair game".

To be fair, I think Shaq should take more flak for this then he has.

Jordan/Bird/Magic didn't go running off to another franchise after 3-4 years, leaving a perfectly good situation in Orlando.

Yeah, yeah. People always say "the last of that kind" and then another team like that shows up again.

Ironically, the Heat super team isn't by any means all that refined and certainly not the perfected model. It has paired up two redudant superstars who literally cannot work cohesively on the court, and added another soft big man who has turned into a spot up shooter.

The scary thing is that they've won 2/3 years through pretty much sheer talent alone. I can see in the future when it's properly done and you have a team so dominant it's reminescent of the 60s Celtics.

Its almost like the 77 Sixers, except the Heat are winning titles due to more cohesion and better defense.

Good lord at that Jordan dick riding at the end. Costas would fit right in with the Jordan stans on this site.

Keywords "Athletic Integrity"

Is everyone paying attention, LeBron?

Anyway, eloquent as always from Costas. And shockingly great foresight of the not so distant future and essence of professional sports.

The loyalty and the consistent cast around the major stars added character, and texture to teams. It made them likable and recognizable. More importantly as teams they developed true championship chemistry.
