View Full Version : Fresh Bullshit: The stupid theory that Shaq came to LA to play with a high schooler.

Here are little brief facts about Shaq and his decision to come to L.A.
Most people would like to say Kobe was lucky to have Shaq on his team but also, at the same time, I like to say Shaq was lucky to have Kobe too. Thanks to Kobe, it landed Shaq on the Lakers.
Kobe Bryant joined the Lakers: July 1, 1996
Shaquile O' Neal joined the Lakers: July 18, 1996
Jerry West persuaded Shaq with an opportunity to win multiple championships with a young squad especially with a young SG, who had potential to be one of the greatest players of all time.
Shaq press conference mentions joining the team with Kobe:

Shaq on Jerry West, showing him highlight videos of Kobe, when he was being recruited by the Lakers:

I gave a well thought out explanation and backed it up with video evidence from Shaq himself. This wasn't a transcript of what he said but videos of him saying it.
I have also documented these instances in chronological order to give you an idea of what came to fruition as he signed with the Lakers.
It's a good thing the Lakers got Kobe, it landed us Shaq.

I have no opinion on the thread. It was started with facts and the events that led up to him going to Los Angeles.
It's because of Kobe that brought Shaq here and in return, them together, brought the city and fans a 3peat.

You made multiple mentions of RMWG changing the title and made a weak attempt to insult him (calling him real women wear pink). That would suggest you are upset.

I never stated an opinion in the OP or the premise of the thread. I don't see how it's over the top unless you are speaking about my opinion on Kobe, which is true.
Is Kobe not a perimeter player? Is he not one of the greatest players to ever play the game? Is he not a top 10 player on most people's list?
Then why is it hard for you to comprehend that one of the greatest players of all time, can't be the greatest perimeter player of all time.

Shaq's exact words when he mentioned Kobe:
"I'm not gonna, you know, take anything away from Cedric Ceballos game, or Nick Van Exel's game. Nick Van Exel is a point guard, the leader of the team; Cedric Ceballos is a slasher; Elden Campbell is a rebounder, scorer when he needs to, and Eddie Jones and Kobe Bryant."
That's it. That's all he said about Kobe. Only the most delusional Kobe fanboy would take that and turn it into Shaq going to LA, specifically to play with Kobe; a 17 year old high schooler that he probably didn't know shit about.

I knew Shaq seriously considered the Lakers after Lakers ambushed his team on the road. I could see from his demeanor and body language when he saw that team. A lot of those players he mention beside Kobe were getting into their prime and Lakers was a surprised team that year. He knew he could take those guys to the next level. I don't think Kobe mattered around that time.

Except he didn't. The Lakers didn't when until Phil took over after three seasons of losing in the playoffs as the favorites. The guys Shaq took to the next level were dudes named Kobe, Horry, Fisher, not Van Exel or Jones.

How was Olrando less of a title contender than LA was? Shaq left because he didn't want to be in Orlando anymore. And he probably was getting a little salty over Penny Hardaway's "best player in basketball" commercials.

If you look at the stats and career, I still believe Jerry West is greater than Kobe. West was a better all around player. Better assists, Better rebounds, better scoring, better efficiency, better EVERYTHING in an era when there was no 3pt shot. And if you know anything about Jerry West, you know he could have gotten a ton of points from the 3pt line like Kobe has.
And in the playoffs, West's stats go UP, whereas Kobe's goes DOWN.

And movies, and Rap records/videos, etc. People seem to forget that when Shaq went to LA, there was no Phil Jackson, or triangle at the time, but he did respect Jerry West, Buss and Del Harris as a coach.
It was Phil however who helped Shaq realize the importance of discipline and how in order to win championships he was gonna have to cut back on all of the side distractions and concentrate on his game a lot more, which Shaq did, to the point where Shaq did better than even Phil could have imagined, especially during their Finals runs.
But of course, leave it to 9er to imagine Shaq weeping in his pillow, imagining a high school star bailing him out, and finally getting him over the hump. Gotta love ISH man.

As someone who actually followed basketball back then (lol), the Lakers were becoming a "trendy" team by 1995 anyway. Van Exel, Ceballos, Eddie Jones, Elden Campbell were a good young nucleus and won 50+ games the year before Shaq arrived.
People were already saying "Showtime is back" in LA and the Forum was starting to sell out again even prior to Shaq going there.

No. I don't care if he said he looked forward to playing with the kid. Thats what the best player on a team does; they encourage their young players.
Your timeline is still off. The REASON the Lakers traded Divac for the #13 pick is that Shaq to LA was a done deal.
