The one where Paul George blew past Lebron is alot worse :confusedshrug:

Jordan did an ok job staying in front of Iverson til the last big crossover which got him in that gif. Iverson routinely beat guys off the dribble with his quickness and handles, Jordan as good as he was couldn't stay with him on that play and I guarantee Lebron would of been left flat footed.

poido123
09-02-2013, 12:45 AM
To answer OP's question, not shut him down, but force Rose to make alot of hard shots. If Rose has a run up and he makes a move one way or another, nobody in the current or former NBA could stop him. However if Rose is trying to beat Jordan off the dribble, he will have difficulty getting round him off a step.

The only player in the last 30 years who could shutdown Rose is Chalmers. He's easily the best perimeter defensive player in the league and perhaps his generation.

Seriously man, that is one of the most overrated plays ever. Iverson didn't blow by him, Jordan didn't fall, and Jordan recovered enough to seriously challenge a bad percentage midrange jumper... Also Iverson was young and Jordan was in his 30s.

Iverson said this too, verbatim how he gave Mike his best move and still almost blocked his shot.

As for OP, Miami shut Rose down. Not LeBron. He just helped make it more difficult, that's all. MJ is a better, quicker man defender than LeBron so I'm sure he'd fare better most likely.

Lebron helped defend Rose with collective trapping and sliding defense to cut off driving lanes. But of course you wouldn't be able to grasp that because you're a simpleton

A healthy Derrick Rose is arguably a top 5 player in the league. Even if Lebron (and the rest of the team defense) were relatively successful 2 years ago, when Rose was forced to be one man show alot of the time already, due to the lack of offensive talent on his team.. Doesn't mean players just shut him down on the regular. Not Lebron and not Jordan.

I mean, did ever MJ even shut down anyone except for midget Bogues? Although it's not like there was any competition on the perimeter in the 90s.

How do we know if Rose is even coming back next season? For all we know, he still hasn't recovered his muscle memory.

Less than one month before training camp opens on one of the most anticipated seasons since the dynasty ended, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau made good on his vow to visit Derrick Rose's offseason base outside Los Angeles to witness Rose's workouts.

Rose, who is set to attend training camp in late September after missing last season following knee surgery, is set to travel to Asia Sept. 4-16 for his second shoe promotional tour this offseason. Before then, he is working out with personal trainer Rob McClanaghan and other NBA players, including Jimmy Butler earlier this week.

[B]Thibodeau traveled west Wednesday to check in on Rose, who is sporting increased range on his jumper and a left-handed floater that he has worked on extensively this offseason.

Thibodeau said last month at the summer league that he doesn't envision

First off, let me state that Michael Jordan is the most overrated defender ever.

Jordan wouldn't be able to stay with Rose on the court. Only superior defenders like LeBron and Pippen would have the lateral speed and length to shut down Rose.

LeBron held Rose to 6% shooting.

For the millionth time, no player is shutting down INDIVIDUALLY a star like Derrick Rose 1v1. LeBron did a great job on Rose, actually fantastic, but it was a team effort to shut down Rose, and this is coming from a person who watched every minute of that series.

The offensive talent of superstars in the NBA shits on the defensive talent produced individually. If you want Jordan to stay in front of Rose and "shut him down" you better hope you have a GREAT help defense behind Jordan.

09-02-2013, 11:37 AM
Young MJ could guard Rose as well as anyone. Not "shut down" but back when Jordan's quickness was at it's peak the combo of size athleticism and quickness would be a headache for any guard.

Getting crossed by AI proves about as much about a defender's ability as getting dunked on by Shaq.

Everytime i see this all i think is how well MJ recovers.

In terms of fundamental defensive strategy, MJ covered him really well. It's stuff you learn in grade school. Watch MJ's left arm, it's always anticipating the move to the right.

He cuts off the burst to the right that Iverson obviously wants, makes an initial swipe at the ball (Iverson still can't blow by him), harasses him on the second move to the left cutting off that direction as well.

Iverson gets MJ to bite with the delayed carry, but MJ recovers well, getting his lower body to cut the space between him and Pip, and then he challenges the shot.

Iverson wanted to blow by him but what MJ does forces him to take a tough shot.

:pimp:

What was more impressive was Iverson had the advantage in this situation. He had a wide open court and had MJ on his heels. But MJ learns and he knew what AI wanted to do and cut him off and stayed with him. That move AI made on him was extremely quick, even AI was a bit out of control due to the speed. Yet MJ still not just managed to stay with him, he managed to stay with his second move and even then contest the shot.

Not bad for an old man.:pimp:

There's a vid on YouTube in which Mj basically prevents Zeke from getting past the 3pt line in almost every possession he's guarding him (i think it's their first meeting after the all star game). This is Zeke a player many here consider having the best handles in history, a player that would break down any player, yet he couldn't shake MJ.

Not to say MJ is perfect (he clearly aint) but it's just an example of how great he was.

Great defenders can get crossed over too. They're the ones who are most likely to get shook because they aren't scared to actually get up on the guy and try to play defense. Instead of most of the guys in the NBA who play off their man so they won't get embarrased., Vince comes to mind. Hell Lebron comes to mind.

Yeah - this right here. Nobody shuts down elite players like D Rose, not even MJ if he played full defense and let the rest of the team work the offensive end. Now you could talk about how far off his regular average MJ would make him go.... but shut down? Nah probly not.

Weren't Bulls fans saying Jimmy Butler shut LeBron down even though Chicago had the whole team collapse on him anytime he drove?
Let me school you real quick one time, bro.

Butler locked LeBron's ass up in ISOs both contested shots, but more importantly off the dribble.

LeBron COULDN'T beat Butler off the dribble due to his man defense. So how could the Bulls collapse on his drives?

Bulls didn't collapse, they have Noah in the paint to contest. Besides the point, LeBron has superstar help to distract the defense: Wade and Bosh.

2011 Rose didn't have any offensive distractions near that caliber, he was a solo gunner act, while also being playmaker and shot creator for everyone. Playing PG and SG. Thus the waisted energy, in turn resulting in low shooting percentage while 6'8 super freak athlete contests his jumpers and gets hyped up by the media as stopping the MVP in "one on one" ...

The reality? Rose was facing MJ and Pippen esque athleticism double teams and defense shadowing him with a constant rotation of Chalmers, Wade, and help defense with Haslem and Bosh to contest at the rim.

LeBron merely stood in front of Rose and contested a man 8 inches shorter than him's jump shot. Big deal.

His defense on Tony Parker in game 6 and game 7 was legit. LeBron didn't lock up Rose on his own. It was team defense. It was Rose not having weapons besides himself to keep the defense honest.

And at any rate, what's more impressive? 22 year old Rose struggling v.s. top ten all-time, 2x MVP, DPOY candidate, super defensive athlete 8 inches taller than him, with help defense from another MVP caliber player, taller than him as well, just as athletic.

Meanwhile, with significantly more offensive help LeBron gets LOCKED up by a rookie defender.

:oldlol:

You LeBron Stans brought this on yourself by exaggerating LeBron "shutting down Rose" solo and holding him to "6%" FG in fourth quarters. And he was 22, facing your boy you guys claim to be GOAT.

Us Rose fans make no excuses, just tell you the truth. Meanwhile back at the sizzler, clown ass LeBron stans make excuses for 22 year old LeBron getting locked up by old ass Bruce Bowen at the same age in his ABYSMAL Finals showing in 2007.
