View Full Version : Biggie's famous Juicy line no more real than Drake's Started from the Bottom song

So Drake got a lot of flack for saying he "started from the bottom", when in reality he started from middle class.

Well, throughout many songs Biggie said he was poor as shit, and specifically, in his song Juicy, he said:

"... my whole crew is loungin'
Celebratin' every day, no more public housin'
Thinkin' back on my one-room shack ...
We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us
No heat, wonder why Christmas missed us "

...when in reality his apartment wasn't that bad. It had seven rooms and a kitchen. His mom was doing pretty fine as a school teacher. See his "one room shack" that he lived in through "public housing" :oldlol: here:
http://homes.yahoo.com/blogs/spaces/notorious-b-g-one-room-shack-brooklyn-listed-210526687.html

And as said, Biggie didn't only say stuff like that in one song. So many of his songs were about making through the struggle and having it rough as a kid. Whereas Drake's "Started from the Bottom" song was an anomaly for him...most of his other songs are about girls or dealing with fame.

And, from the article...

"To me, that's a part of an alter ego," she (Voletta Wallace) said in a 2002 documentary called "Tupac and Biggie." "That's the rags-to-riches person that he wants to sing about. ... I had a seven-and-a-half-room apartment. I heard I live in a shack. My son said it was his 'one-room shack.'"

Or, as the New York Daily News quotes from Cheo Hodari Coker's biography ("Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G."):

"Eleven days after his birth, Ms. Wallace took her son to the place that he would call home for the next 20 years. Theirs was a spacious apartment, with a large living room, a dining area, a study, and three bedrooms. The one opposite the kitchen on the far end of the hall was Christopher's.

There's not one rapper that you can go through all of their songs without pointing out a lot of lies and/or exaggerations. It's part of the business. As long as they're keeping it real off record, then I have no problem with this.

People don't realize Tupac and Biggie were as fake as they come. :oldlol:

Tupac was a gay hip hop dancer when he was 17, and all of a sudden he's a hardcore thug who murders for fun? :biggums:

Drake > Tupac and that fat ass sensitive little bitch Biggie smalls. Lacked discipline in his diet so he took his inner frustrations out on the mic. ****in loser.

More importantly Drake actually did start from the bottom (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bottom&defid=892603).

I am wondering if Biggie's former apartment was redone with new wood floors and such and some of that $745k listing price is because of the mere fact that he grew up there.

A school teacher can't afford a home even 1/4th of that cost

This. Bed Stuy today is nothing like Bed Stuy 'do or die' from the 90s and before. Technically it's 'Clinton Hill' now. From the article:

It's in what the listing calls a "lovely limestone eight-unit building," in the gentrifying area of Brooklyn that's now known as Clinton Hill, on the border with Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy).

The neighborhood has prospered enormously since his childhood

It even mentions the people selling it bought it for $450K in 2004 and will make a $300K profit from sales. Probably looks nothing like it did when the Wallace family lived there, same with the surrounding neighborhood.

where in "started from the bottom" did drake say he was actually from the hood? why do people interpret it like that? when it comes to rapping and singing, he DID start from the bottom in terms of making it in the rap game. he came from an affluent suburban neighborhood in canada, making it almost impossible for anybody to take him seriously. but he still made it by rapping about things he knew about. i mean jesus, he specifically said in wu tang forever (and other songs) he did NOT grow up in the hood.

"i find peace knowing that it's harder in the streets,
luckily i didn't have to grow there
i would only grow there 'cuz ****** that i know there"

yet somehow drake is the fake one

for me it's difficult to accept a middle class rap artist who is with YMCMB and constantly doing colabs with artists who DO claim to be hood...

you didn't see and collabs between Pac and Will Smith did you?

with the exception of a few lines like the one you just pointed out Drake does walk and talk hood...I am sure he only throws those lines out so he can point to them if anyone calls him a fake just like you have here...

"real ngga" this and that...saggin pants...etc

what you're doing with Drake right now is the same as a woman who dressed up in a sexy little slutty dress and is confused as to why she is being hit on...she might not be a slut, and she may even say multiple time she is not a slut, but she is wearing a slut's uniform

and Drake might not claim be hood but it is difficult to see that through all the n-bombs, f-bombs with Wayne, Birdman, Rick Ross, 2 Chains, etc posed all around him ready to talk about strippers and Buggattis and tattoos...he is hidden in a "hood" setting

dude i don't live in the hood and every single black person i know says ***** :oldlol: literally every single one. and most teens/young adults sag their pants, it's just a style. and calling yourself "real" doesn't mean you're a gangster. it just means that you're honest :confusedshrug:

and the reason he's seen with lil wayne, birdman, rick ross and 2 chainz is because he's signed to a major record label:facepalm is he supposed to refuse photos with them? esp. with lil wayne, that's his mentor and they're extremely close.

also strippers buggattis and tattoos don't mean you're from the hood...and whatever tattoos he has i doubt they're anything hood-related. the only tattoo i know he has is one of aaliyah's face :oldlol:

No comparison to drake.

1. New York City is sooooooo much different now then it was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. St James and Fulton st where biggie and junior mafia were from was not a very nice place. Things are different now. Try finding any apartment in Brooklyn for less than 2000 a month. It's almost impossible. Many of the New York City hoods from back then are no longer hoods.

2. I read the comments biggies mom made in Xxl magazine like at least 10 years ago. Cease and some of junior mafia who were younger than biggie used to stay in that apartment. Big's mom was a teacher and a single parent with no help. They had food on the table but far from rich. More like lower middle class.

3. Biggie dropped out of school to sell crack. Bedstuy was a drug haven and he grew up during the crack era. That property wasn't worth much back then besides being very spacious.

4. New York laws and gulianni changed a lot of things in the last couple decades, for good or for bad depending how you look at it, but either way much of the city is "cleaned up".

There's different levels of hood as well.

Just because you're from the hood, it doesn't mean that you are hood. And then there's different levels within that as well.

People from the hood will know if one is from the hood by the way they carry themselves also. And many will know what level they're from.

Some dude may size me up and know that I am from there, and what level of hood I am.

Being 'hood' also doesn't mean that they rob, kill, slang, etc.etc. NO

It just means that you're from the area, you grew up around certain elements, you know how to deal with certain things, you have a certain awareness etc.etc.

So yeah, BIG and most rappers may not be 'G' level 1. But most people will agree that they are from there.

Drake is one of the kids from a nice suburban area, that enjoys hip hop and gets highly influenced by it. But cats that are from the hood (regardless of which level) know he's a fugazi to the extreme.

But again

Most rappers are fake. I haven't listened to it/liked it since HS really but had an issue with it post HS when I realized being a white kid from a middle class home I was there target :oldlol: . I don't want to listen to a guy talk about struggle and how he'll straight up punk you and make tons of $$ when he's just a manufactured product that's put out to trick people into buying his albums. Same with Drake. Dude's not making music, he's selling a lifestyle. An image. Nobody would be buying his albums if he was talking about real things or anything other than women/booze/money etc. He knows it, studio's know it.

People get reaaal upset when you point it out tho. Everybody loves to think there favorite rapper keeps it real and Drake isn't just a guy who wants to make money. Only reason dude's rapping is because acting didn't work out for him.

And neither should you. But if you do, you should be consistent with it.

As long as they have talent, I myself don't care where they came from. And really we will never know the true story of these guys' in their youths unless we knew them personally.

So fukk it...if someone makes an album that I think is a 8.5 out of 10, it will always be an 8.5 out of 10 to me, regardless of where that person grew up.

Yes I am sure it was. I already took that into consideration.

The apartment always had 7 1/2 rooms though...like his mom said. Yet he tried to say it was a one room shack and that he got it from public housing.

I don't know why Biggie said "no more public housing" and then followed it with "We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us"

there would be no landlord in public housing

I love Big, perhaps the most talented rapper ever...but those lines are inconsitant and just bad

The difference is Biggie has amazing flow, and Drake doesn't.
I'm not the biggest drake fan but if there is one thing that's great about drake it's his flow, he has like 10 different flows in his arsenal lol
