The Denver Nuggets plan on playing "smashmouth basketball" under new head coach Brian Shaw.

"Smashmouth means that you are literally going to get your mouth smashed if you're going against us for a rebound or a loose ball," Shaw said. "We want to have a nasty disposition, both offensively and defensively."

Interesting.

I always believed that teams should be more physical regardless of the rules.

Why?

Eventually you're gonna get calls during the game, refs won't call everything so you'll get away with more than they're gonna call specially in the 4th.

Naturally, some calls won't go your way, but calls don't go team's way regardless.

There's also a difference between playing hard and physical and being downright dumb and aggressive. I think Shaw will show them old school defensive tactics and how to mask them from the refs.

FINALLY a team steps forward to be the antithesis of the soft ass floppers and ticy tac golden boys from LA (Clippers) and Miami cHeat. I'm sick of seeing such soft basketball at the professional level. This p*ssy ticy-tac flop era needs to TURN AROUND. Seemed like every team was following the soft trend until these guys spoke up. I look forward to watching some real basketball from them this season.

Physical play is great. But trying to hurt people..come on. Play basketball. The nugs are not going to do much this season I can already tell.

How? They have not got a single thug on the team? McGee/Hickson/Faried all play tough (on offense) but are not thugs or guys that hand out hard fouls on the regular. I don't think they got the personal to play smash mouth tbh.

isnt this a clear rules violation

resembles the saints coach being suspended a year for bounties

saying you're going to intentionally try and injure people is a clear cut suspension

Do they have the right players for this... Outside of Faried everybody tries to play finesse ball

Good luck with that. In todays game if you get too close to a star player it's a foul. And Javale isn't Charles Oakley.

Toughness isn`t a button you can chose to push. Either you have or you don`t.

Shaw learned from the Master of Smashmouth, Frank Vogel. This will definitely be a change up from what the Nuggets are used to doing.

Not THAT far off offensively. Denver destroyed the paint offensively last year. Defensively not so much but isn't hard to get guys to add a little extra on there fouls if that's what your after. Probably not the best strategy in today's league but we shall see.

Faried/McGee will get after boards. Danilo is a flopping bitch on offense but defensively gets after people and can get a little rough. Pretty sure Durant called him the toughest defensive player along with Tony Allen.

Overall I can't really see it tho, can't see any team really tho. Today's rules just don't allow it to work.

They can play tough if they want, but then they better not whine when their opponents get twice as many FT's.

This was pretty much the same squad that bitched and moaned how "dirty" the Warriors were in the playoffs and all of sudden they are going to play mouth smash basketball......
