Anybody want to join an ISH competition when the reg season starts?

Thank you to everyone go signed up. Rules will be posted by tomorrow (Friday, Oct 11th) atleast by 12 pm PST.

If anyone has suggestions about rules, PM me.

Active members only. People who have been known to have multiple accounts are excluded. New members (Apr 2013ers) will be under review for eligibility to join.

We'll all pick our winning choices for various match-ups. For instance, if it's Heat vs Bulls, a participant will pick one of the two teams, predict how much said team will win by. Say something like, "Heat by 5."
You'll gain 1 point for every correct winning prediction and an additional 2 points for every time you get the margin of victory correct.
Obviously, it'll most likely get difficult keeping track of everyone's picks if there are 10+ competitors here and there are 5-10 games every night. Instead of doing that I'd prefer just picking specific games for an entire week and then tally up the scores at the end of the week.
I'm even thinking about going through the regular season, picking out the games beforehand, and then having all competitors pick before the season even begins, but that'd be slightly unfair since we never know how injuries will affect teams, trades, a cold streak, etc., so it'd take the fun/interest out of it.

I'll explain more as we get closer to the start of the season, but for now I'd just like to see if anyone is interested based off my explanation. Once I have a definite 10 player list, I'll start the main thread where we'll discuss the game and tally scores.

I'm also considering doing something like a regular season competition and the top players compete in a playoffs during the NBA Playoffs. That depends on the number of participants.

I want 10 people to start off, but I'm willing to go up to 20 if someone else is willing to help me keep the game organized by keeping track of people's scores.
If at any time we all feel like any one person is disrupting the game, he/she (who am I kidding? Just "he") will be booted from the game.


Lastly, I don't have a prize to give. I suppose the best you can get for winning is to say you're ISH's 2013-14 Champion.

If you are included on the list above, please check into this thread within 24 hours minimum or you won't be added. I am going to allow 30 players to sign up. If we can't get to 30 in a reasonable time, I will possibly suspend the 30 man list and stick with 20 or work out something different where it'll have to be another even number of competitors, such as 26 total (so 13/conference).

Note: I have decided to give the clearly not-so-active members a chance since it turns out that this game is drawing as many regular posters' attention as I had presumed. It wasn't favoritism that made me say, "ACTIVE MEMBERS ONLY." I just assumed those folks are on often so they'd want to reserve themselves a spot. Oh, well.
Now I feel bad for kicking dr hee out, so if you're reading this, dr hee, and your pride isn't shot, please post within the 24 hour gap and I'll add you on.
Lastly, I am taking a huge risk by allowing people who aren't active to sign up for the last 10 spots, so pleas ONLY sign up if you're 100% certain you'll actively participate. It may be as little as 2-5 posts per week of activity in the game thread.

Nah. I'd like to keep it the way I suggested because it's just simpler overall. 1 pt per accurate winner prediction & 1 pt per accurate marginal of win. Maybe another pt for accurately predicting who is the leader in points, rebounds an assists for the game. Idk. I'll think more about it in the next few days.

here is how it should be. pick any 5-6 games for the upcoming week with the week starting from monday. post these games on sunday night so there is no confusion and every participant has to pick their wins for the upcoming week 2 hours before the first game on monday. this way , it will be easier to keep thread updated if people make choices before any games begin rather than waiting for every game to start.
If you picking against the spread then you get 2 pts for the win. For just the win/loss bet, you get 1 point if you win.i don't like any points for picking any type of stat leader as it is too obvious in a lot of games. better would be points scored by either teams, amount of 3s made etc.

Since I'm the only guy in this thread with less than 1000 posts and you judge based on post count...I had like 130 posts in the recent Eurobasket thread alone, but whatever. You probably don't care about those eurobums. Pretty much all of my posts were during the last few months. Sorry for wasting your time. Maybe you can give me an estimate of how much I have to post during the season to be worthy next year? Don't have the time to get to 10,000 or something, but maybe I can earn a spot. It would also be helpful to have a list of topics you tend to read, so I can earn your attention.

Yes to both questions. Actually I'm even considering doing 5 games only because how difficult can it really be to just pick 5 winners? I'll pick different teams per week (so nothing like Monday: Heat @ Pacers, Tuesday: Knicks @ Heat), though I'm sure nobody will be interested in a match-up like Bobcats vs Celtics.
Another thing I want to implement is everyone picking one player per week on a Sunday evening/Monday morning and then getting additional points depending on how that player plays, but I think it's a bad idea because everyone will just go for guys like LeBron, KD, etc., so it wouldn't be very competitive.

One more idea that I want people's opinion on:

If we get 30 people to join (probably will just stop at 20, though), I'll split everyone into separate groups called Group A, Group B, Group C, etc., and each group will be designated specific games per week, so that way no one ends up having identical votes outside of those groups. Does that make sense?

Example (not the actual NBA schedule):
Week 1
Group A: Heat @ Celtics, Kings @ Clippers, & Rockets @ LAL
Group B: Kings @ Clippers, Thunder @ Knicks & Bulls @ Blazers
Group C: Rockets @ LAL, Nuggets @ Sixers, GSW @ Pacers
Etc.

Then members of each group will make their selections off those games. If you're in group A, you only pick through the games included in group A. I'll add one game that every single group will have, something down the lines of what Rose suggested where it'll be a lowly match-up but if you pick correctly, it'll worth an additional point.

Lastly, I want to implement a once/week betting system. You can call someone out and say, "I'll bet you 5 points that the Cavaliers beat the Nets tonight." If other person accepts then the bet is on. Whoever's choice wins gets those points, and then those added points can be doubled or canceled if both sides agree to something else, such as "If the game goes into OT, the bet goes to 10 points" or maybe "If Cavaliers win by exactly 16 points, you will give me additional 5 points."

These are just suggestions for now. I'll include them if most people agree to them. We still have a few weeks to work out the rules and regulations of the game, so if anyone has better ideas, shoot 'em at me. I'm all ears. I want this to be as entertaining as possible.

However, I dislike the idea of certain groups picking out of certain games. Because sometimes you'll draw predictions of picking out of horrible team v horrible team. And nobody wants to say Suns>76ers, or even worse the dreaded b2b home-home games of like atlanta-charlotte.:lol

I like the idea of groups though for deciding playoff rankings or maybe to skew the points in betting against each other the "rivalry" games would also either be worth more points per time i.e. minimum wager, or there's an extra 2 points or something for whoever wins regardless of whether or not 10 points were bet or just 3.

I like your player idea too but you could make it a matchup type thing. Where I bet LeBron scores more than Carmelo when they play.

With the group thing, I could move people around. For instance, you're Group A one week and the next you're in Group B? But whoever was in Group A with you doesn't get moved to Group B. idk, though. Sounds like too much work to keep track of who has already been in groups with who. That way it's always a fair match-up on a week to week basis. Like Group A might get a powerhouse match-up of Heat vs Thunder, but then Group A might not see the Heat or the Thunder in any match-ups for the next week or two.

throwing an Idea out there. At halftime you have one opportunity to switch your pick on who will win, but it will only count for .5 points if you get it right and it will be -2 if you get it wrong.

There are plenty who don't need to check in because they post enough for me to know they're still here, but the inactive members are the ones making me hesitate.
