Can you disable smiley emoticons on android phones?

I recently bought an HTC One and when you text it turns a simple ":)" or ":P" into a weird android smiley. Is there any way to disable this?

There's no way to disable them they're built into the Htc one software... You might wanna try downloading a messaging app if its really bothering you
