View Full Version : Heat fans.... Still Mad About 2011 Finals?

You know, I was thinking about this just now. It sucked at the time, but I think its a good thing. The Heat got their rings, so it doesn't really matter, but I'm actually glad that guys like Dirk and Peja get their rings. You never want to see great players have to retire ringless.

I'm not a Heat fan, but I think losing the 2011 in retrospect changed the mind set of LeBron.

Its OK to be hated when you are a winner, but to be hated and be a loser is something no one wants to be.

LeBron said after winning the 2012 Finals, "I just went back to playing the game I love, having fun. I'm was done being the villain."

I think that experience made LeBron a better player.

I don't know.

We might not have went out and gotten Battier.

And Lebron might not have practiced so hard in the summer that year and came back with a stronger jump shot.

2011 was the first time one of my teams reached the big game (in my life time) and lost. The 97 and 03 Marlins won the WS, and the Heat won in 06. This really hurt (especially game 2), but despite all of the trash talk from my friends and family (all Bulls, Celtics, Knicks, ect. fans- ISHesque), I said wow my team actually made the Finals. I was so used to losing being a Dolphins, Panthers, Marlins, and Hurricanes fan, that I put things in perspective and I got over it very quickly.

However, I still had it in the back of my mind all of the next season and every time they seemed to be down (game 3 against Pacers, game 6 against Boston), I got very worried of them being a colossal failure, but they overcame all adversity after 2011, and won two titles. Now even if they lose this year, I enjoyed the ride.

To make a long story short, I got over it quickly, but it lingered in the back of my mind until they finally won the title.

Depends on what you mean by hurt. It doesn't make me really sad or emotional when I think about it like after they lost, but it still pops up in my mind once in a while. You can't dwell on the past.

Until Miami won the championship in 2012, I was still mad about the loss. You just never know when your team is going to get back in the finals. Down 3-2 to Boston, losing Bosh, etc. raised my anxiety through the roof. Having to deal with Miami haters another season was going to be too much. Thankfully Miami won and shut the haters up for a while.

This. I sometimes think, what if they had won 2011 and this would now be a 3peat instead of a repeat, but I'm honestly not sure that would have happened. I'd prefer these 2 over a possible 1 and done.

The scenarios are different. 1999 was a disney movie where the bad guys won. I felt like it was destiny that we were going to win.

The Heat underperformed in a finals series that they were supposed to sweep or win in 5 , it's disappointing but not heart breaking.

Also, you won 2 titles....

so...I guess I can see how people get over it. The knicks spiraled down into the pits of hell after 1999

It's heart breaking seeing your favorite team lose no matter what if you are emotionally invested. Even if Miami choked, really disappointed, or whatever, it still hurt me being emotionally invested. The Heat could win 10 titles, and 2011 will never disappear.

you represent the smaller percentage of true FL sports fans who aren't front running bandwagon jumpers.

Its not your fault obviously but that's the effects of what LBJ, Wade, and Bosh did, or even more than that, i guess its how they did it. There are no excuses for those douchebags.

The city of Miami deserves all the hatred over the Heat. Its a phase down there, and it will be over soon and people will go back to not giving a shit about the Heat.

There's a winning culture here when it comes to the Heat and the Heat have been the only consistent franchise. It's going to take a lot for people to start not giving a shit about the Heat. Miami is a football city first, but until the Dolphins or Hurricanes ever go back to how they used to be, I don't think this will change anytime soon.

Possibly. To me, losing their first year together sucks, but its understandable. A team making the finals their first year together is pretty good.

Would losing this past year have been worse than losing in 2011?
If we won in '11, it wouldn't have been that bad. Win in '11 & '12, lose in '13. It would've been disappointing though. With the 27 game win streak and 66 win season.

DaSeba5
10-17-2013, 04:22 PM
Would losing this past year have been worse than losing in 2011?

No because:

1. Miami was the clear favorite against Dallas, so everyone tends to discredit how good Dallas was and emphasize how much Miami choked.

2. A lot of people said Miami was the favorite, but not by much. In fact, many picked the Spurs to win in 6 or 7, or for Miami to win in 6 or 7. We were equally matched.

3. If they had beaten Dallas and I'm assuming they beat OKC in 2012, a loss after winning 2 in a row doesn't hurt that bad.

Although being the first team to defeat the Spurs in the Finals is something a franchise can brag about if they want to be considered one of the best franchises in the league.

A good comparison would be the Celtics "big three"... They won it all in their first season and never won again... That game 7 loss to the Lakers had to hurt more for Celts fans than the 2011 loss to Dallas for Heat fans

Well, that's largely due to injury and getting jobbed in the game 7 4thQ.

Not hurt at all.
I watched Michael Jordan lose over and over in the late 80's hoisting up 30+ shots a game, and he learnt from it and became better.
Lebron did the opposite, he wasn't attacking enough with his scoring (that said he is a different player) and he learnt from it and moved forward.

The Heat have been very fortunate to play in 2 cakewalk finals runs the last few years, and Lebron has been very lucky to get away with some of the situations he got himself in like last year, where Allen saved the day.

It was a tough final to watch. I still remember Dirk and Terry going HAM in the 4'th when the Heat had double digits and Wade struggling mostly by himself. Gotta give credit to Carlisle, he dominated Spo in every aspect of the game, he was the most important factor imo. Dirk was incredible, i remember i was watching the game and was thinking "damn, when will this guy miss one".

I still think it helped the franchise a lot. Spo got a lot better, Wade, Lebron and Bosh found their place on the court, they changed their mentality and it showed.
