View Full Version : NBA Slam Dunk Contest History - Individual Performance Video Reference

Sometimes dunking performances (for better or worse) get lost in the shuffle out there. We tend to know the basics of the big years (Spud produced in '86, Jordan beat 'Nique in '88) but I also think it's worth knowing Tom Chambers was in the contest in '87 and finished one dunk.
As such, to cut out the middle man that is shuffling through 50 minute videos to find each dunk from a particular player, I thought I'd provide a player by player video rundown from every dunk contest. It's a work in progress, but I'll slowly be working my way upward in chronological order.
If you're looking for specific years, players or teams, it may be helpful (for those who don't know) to press CTRL+F and enter your search. Without further ado:

Some really and really underrated performances, from guys like Woolridge, Stansbury, Otis Smith, Edgar Jones even Drexler and Nance(who won it).
Those are some really underrated dunkers though (in-game), especially a ***** like Woolridge or Nance, along with guys like Chambers, Griffith, Cooper, Gerald Wilkins before injuries...

1989 is in the process of being added this week. Shelton Jones had an underrated performance.
Larry Johnson in 1992 was impressive in its own right.Yep, that was his contest to lose that year. It's almost a shame '92 is always remembered for Cedric Ceballos and his blindfold dunk. I think LJ had the most impressive performance until he reached the Finals. I'll post that one soon.

Even Carter in dunk contest didn't get me interested.

Drexler in '88 :lol
what the hell Clyde? That was like the the most wrong dunk selection ever. All things considered, I thought Clyde had a solid contest in '88. I'm not sure why he went for the same windmill during his first two turns but for the time, the rest of his arsenal wasn't too shabby. In fact, it was probably one of Clyde's best showings. He might the first player I've ever seen perform a clockwise 360 (his last dunk in '88).

The 1990 NBA Slam Dunk Contest is completed and has been added to post #2. I actually believe that should have been Kenny Smith's contest. Dominique was booed after victory for bringing absolutely nothing new the table yet still emerging victorious. Felt like a make-up victory for 'Nique after getting jobbed in '88.

Smith had one of the most creative contests in the history of the dunk contest up to that point. He was a guy with a plan, knew what he was doing, and executed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbCFWkCfSs8

:lol Dude barely moved outside of the foul line his whole routine. Pretty non-shalant attitude the whole time but still I'm pretty sure that was the first off the head alley oop ever and he surprised me with the creativity of the tosses. Not bad overall.

Was Houston serious? He should have entered the 3 pt contest instead.

If you guys get a chance, could you give it a shot and provide any feedback or shortcomings? That's my first go-around on Sporcle creation.

ESPN.com is celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the first NBA Slam Dunk Contest by creating a dunk bracket, composed of 32 dunks by 32 players. Maddeningly, one must vote via Tweet. So for those who are Twitter-free, no dice. Further, the poll chose Vince Carter's between-the-legs as his dunk, not his clockwise 360 cuff windmill. Still, if you want to give it a look...

2002 has been added. Before this year's contest, 2002 was probably best known for containing the worst rule change in history: The Wheel, which essentially sapped Steve Francis of any chance at winning. Nothing like forcing a 6'3'' two-foot jumping guard who can't palm a ball to execute a Statue of Liberty 360 from the dotted line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K26yoKd4TJo
Jason Richardson emerged victorious on the heels of that nasty bounce reverse swing jam. But it's worth noting a young Gerald Wallace also made a solid run of things.

They were truly the last great Slam Dunkers.Yeah there was a thread that popped up a month ago asking for each of our top five dunks from contests between 2001-20013 and I began to realize my top five was pretty much just made up of various Desmond Mason and Jason Richardson flushes.

Pretty great article on Vince Carter's 2000 performance: http://www.cbssports.com/nba/feature/25064836/the-night-vinsanity-was-born
"Not only did I want the score, but I wanted to wow you," Carter said. "I want to strike fear into the next guy. Just let people know, ‘Yeah, you thought this is what I could do but now you're getting to see it live and it's better than expected.' That's what I'm trying to get out of this."
McGrady needed to know what was about to happen.
"He's like, ‘Cuz, what the hell are you going to do?'" Vince remembers with fondness and glee in his voice. "I was like, ‘Man, just bounce it and step back.'"
Is it safe to say Dwight Howard will never be that guy again?
