View Full Version : Where do you rank Melo?

Ok, as we know, ESPN made Melo #15 in current NBA rankings.

IMO, they are nuts. Dont know what you guys think, but no way there are 14 guys better than Melo in the NBA right now.

WTF are they talking about? Anthony is coming from maybe his better overall season, winning his 1st scoring title with 28.7 ppg + 6.9 reb, Nba all 2nd team and 3RD place in MVP Race.

And they say Melo in #15? :facepalm :facepalm  :biggums:

For me, Carmelo Anthony is a TOP 5 right now. Where do you rank Melo?

The ESPN rankings aren't actual rankings. They purposefully put in ridiculous and controversial rankings because it gives them media attention and more people want to view their rankings.

Of course he's 14th. Paul George is clearly a superior player who everyone would take over Melo.

Last week they spent time analyzing why the Knicks were only estimated at 37 wins and how stupid that was. Note that ESPN was the one making the prediction. So they were analyzing why their own prediction was bad.

As a Heat fan, I would not take him over Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Howard, CP3, Durant, Harden, Dwill3, George, Hibbert, DRose, Noah, Irving, Nowitki, Drummond, Monroe, Steph Curry, Griffin, Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Garnett, Aldridge etc so he does not belong to my to 20 and I have zero problem with that.

A great player, that has the ability to be the best on the court on any given night? Is that a good enough answer?

Carmelo Anthony is probably the best Iso player in the NBA. He might be the best 1-on-1 player in the world as well. And he is certainly an offensive weapon like few others. But once you start looking at his effect on games (+/-, Adj +/-, RAPM) you recognize he really doesn't have the impact that his offensive skills suggest.

He has played in the NBA for 8 years. His first three, despite solid statistical contributions, were essentially a wash: The Nuggets were almost the exact same team with him on the bench as with him on the floor (his RAPM were -.1, .1, .2). While he has improved, its not by as much as people think, and he is STILL a defensive liability.

Most consider last year his best season. He ranked 52nd in RAPM. His career best is 42nd. The painful truth is he gets the tough baskets. But tough baskets are inefficient. Being the best Iso player is akin to being the prettiest pig. Its simply not the way winning basketball is played.

Lower end top tier star.

Top tier stars are LeBron, KD, Rose, CP3, Kobe, Dwight, Melo, Westbrook, Kyrie, Wade, not in that order. He's not and never has been the best scorer, and scoring is all he does well

I'd say probably the lower end of the top 10, arguably just outside.

And RAPM? Seriously? All you gotta do is watch his game. He's a one-dimensional volume scorer.

Not top 15. The guy is overrated. His style of play is not winning bball, especially at his max salary. He is the typical player that is overrated these days- relatively inefficient scoring, no defense, ball hog and it's not like he is an absolute beast on rebounding to make it up- he is merely a good rebounder for his position. Players in this mold are glorified these days because of the media.

I've always said Melo isn't a top 10 current player. People say I'm trolling, but I'm not. I stick with my stance that he's on the same tier as Boozer and Griffin.

Great post. Now maybe people can stop whining about his ranking. There's a difference between great stats and playing WINNING basketball so people shouldn't get their panties in a bunch because somebody chooses to takes another player(who has more impact on WINNING) over him...If I just want nice stats, Ill go play NBA 2K...

You can't just throw those 9 in a group and say "rest in any order". There's some clear tiers and distinctions in that group.

As for Melo, I think after LeBron, Durant, and CP3 he's one of 5-7 guys right now who can legitimately be the 4th best player in the NBA over the course of the season. I mean he can even be the best for a 1-2 week stretch as we saw last year, but over the course of the season I think those are the only 3 players who will clearly prove to be better at this point. Someone may emerge this year, and Melo may even take a step back or something, so I'm mostly basing this on last year.

In no order when healthy:

Top Tier:
Lebron
Durant

2nd Tier:
Dwight
CP3
Westbrook
Harden
Melo
Duncan
Wade
Williams
Rose
Love

3rd Tier:
Curry
George
Rondo
Parker

Gasol, Holiday, Noah etc. are just glorified role players.

Kyrie, Lopez, Lawson etc. are too one dimensional to make the list.

Wall, Davis etc. haven't proven anything and are only ranked highly based off their potential.
