This is the most biased post I'll write all week but even when trying to put those biases aside, I still think Robinson is an underrated dunker. I understand Shaquille O'Neal would get a lot of support for such a random title (best seven foot dunker) but I find Robinson to be more versatile in his slams than nearly any other center I've ever seen - windmills off one foot, reverses, 360's, facials, coast-to-coasts, double pumps, oops, power flushes, two hand windmills, etc.

Aside from O'Neal and Robinson, who are some other great seven foot dunkers?

Amar'e would be on the shortlist if he was an inch taller. But 7 foot is very arbitrary.

In real life Amare is probably 6'9 tops. There's no way he is truly 6'11.

In this day and age people use "seven footer" interchangeably with almost anyone who plays the position of "big." People call Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki 7 footers when theyre bascally Lebrons height.

Very few players in the league have ever been a legit 7 feet.

Larry Nance, Ralph Sampson,You know the funny thing about Larry Nance? Sometimes in clips he looks like he's 7'2'' but he was always listed around 6'10''. I think his slender build, the short shorts, and his wingspan just always made him look taller than he was. Good pull regardless. Big fan of his cradles.

Ive seen Blake Griffin in person. He is 6'8 at best. Not 6'10.

Measurements are always exaggerated.

He measured 6' 8.5" as a rookie. might have grown. I guess if he is looking for legit 7 footer there is not a lot of them.

crazy that Shaq measured in at 7'1 w/o shoes,

Wilt with Kareem had some pretty nasty dunks, just probably not flashy enough to qualify.

Hakeem fits the bill. Legit 7ft with loads of amazing dunks.

Garnett is a 7ft (asked to be listed as 6-11), had some great dunks.

Amare is like 6'9". Maaaaaybe 6'10" at best. Stood next to him at a club a few years back and I've been next to legit 7' guys and he wasn't close to that.

Whomever gets the nod, it would be shameful to not remember the creator of:

"The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam."

Lest we not forget the 'Rim Wrecker', the 'Go-Rilla', the 'Look Out Below', the 'In-Your-Face Disgrace', the 'Cover Your Head', the 'Yo-Mama', and the 'Spine-Chiller Supreme'.

Used to go by "Sir Slam", "Dr. Dunkenstein", and "Chocolate Thunder."

He's as close to 7' as some of the others mentioned here.

Was Tom Chambers 7 foot?

But McGee is probably the best 7 foot dunker. Doesn't get enough credit because he's not as good a basketball player as the rest of these guys.

no pun intended

No

Hakeem is about 6-9 and change to 6-10, Garnett was measured 6-11, he just asked for them not to lie about his list info like they do for pretty much everyone else (such as Hakeem). As stated before, not nearly as many true 7 footers are ever in the NBA at any given time as people would like to believe. There's like only a few dozen that even live in the U.S. If NBA list info was true that'd be pretty much every center in the league but truth is only a small handful of NBA players are legit 7 footers and most are generally a bit stiff.

Shaq, in my opinion, was the greatest dunker ever.
He doesn't have the flash, style and grace of a Vince Carter, but he easily has the most dunks in NBA history (not basing that statement on numbers.. but pretty sure I'm right here), dunked over a lot of guys and his dunks were hard.

In 04-05, when he was just past his peak as a player, 24% of his FG attempts were dunk attempts! (see 82 games). I wish I could get more numbers, from prior seasons as well, but I can't find them.

Rake, if the point of this thread was to point out how little great 7ft dunkers there are.. you've done a good job sir.

Young Artis Gilmore, Kareem, Robinson, Shaq, and Wilt were all frighteningly agile and strong TRUE 7 footers, the most agile and powerful of all time at that size. Anyone of them can have a case made here depending on what blend of power, finesse, style, or w/e your criteria is. A nod to Ralph Sampson too.

If every player who was listed 7 foot was actually 7 foot than it would exceed the u.s. population of 7 footers. If OP means true 7 footers, and not 'list info' than Ewing shouldn't count because many players active right now or throughout history are or have been Ewings height (the 6-10 range) which includes countless players including guys once listed as low as 6-9 (like Bill Russell) where as actual 7 footers are very rare which is I think what OP was getting at.

Shaq towards the end of his career was closer to 6-11 w/o shoes (knee surgeries, massive weight gain etc). He admitted so on Howard Stern (I believe he said 6-11.5 w/o shoes). Which still makes Dirk in that pic about 6-10 as stated before on here (though I do not agree with the claim that he's 'Lebron's height' he's definitely taller than the 6-7 to 6-8 Lebron).

And he certainly does things in game that haven't been done before... have many 7 footers attempted to dunk from the free throw line while jumping over a defender, in game? That he failed miserably is irrelevant, he gets kudos for even thinking it possible in my book :D

Garnett and Duncan are slightly smaller than Dirk. Durant is smaller than Duncan and Garnett. Lebron looks like he is about two inches smaller than Durant. It doesn't add up. If Dirk is 6-10, Lebron isn't 6-7 or 6-8.

Dirk said in a German Interview that he is 2.14 m, which is pretty much 7 feet.

Lebron as a 17 year old was measured barefoot 6'7" 2/4 and 6'8" 2/4 in shoes... he is easily closer to 6'8" barefoot right now, 6'9 in shoes tops... he said it himself a couple of times....

Durant is not 6'9... i mean yes he is measured that barefoot... but he is more like 6'10-6'11 somewhere in shoes... NBA measurements are usually in shoes, Durant got cheated

As far as this thread goes i vote DARRYL DAWKINS.... he is listed 6'11 or 7'0

That way the focus could be on dunking ability and not whether Patrick Ewing was wearing triple socks on measurement day and earned a seven footer designation thanks to the hightop fade clause.

I feel if someone is listed seven feet tall, it probably means they're pretty close to seven feet tall. If they're listed 6'11'' or 6'10'' they tend to be well short of the seven foot mark, with or without shoes. So again, for all intents and purpose, including listed seven footers in this discussion seems like an acceptable idea.
