The term according to urban dictionary started december 2012. But like the word "swag" it seems to have reached a cultural high point and become a trendy word after it's inception. I personally haven't heard it before this month, but lately it's posted everywhere

In the funeral self-portraits posted earlier, the first one is of some dumbass kid smiling while posing in front of his grandmother's open coffin. The caption says something about him not knowing his dead grandmother is in the background. Wtf? Did he not review the pic before sharing it with the entire f*cking world?

I don't think the word selfie has ever been commonly used. It could have been one of those overly cute nicknames couples use on one another like snookems. So yes, it is considered a trendy pop word at the moment.
