I've never heard the term before now I see it everywhere. It's like people are purposely trying to go out of their way to use "selfie" in a sentence or a status update

Man I feel like a dinosaur. So behind in today's slang. I still haven't figured out hashtag and YOLO

I get that, but the term seems to be the popular word to say lately. You know it's getting out of hand when people go out there way to say it

The term according to urban dictionary started december 2012. But like the word "swag" it seems to have reached a cultural high point and become a trendy word after it's inception. I personally haven't heard it before this month, but lately it's posted everywhere

Funeral Selfies

Posing in church bathrooms, before coffins and next to hearses, teenagers have been posting enough self-portraits taken at funerals to compile into a blog.

The Tumblr Selfies at Funerals documents a bizarre social phenomenon that tangles solemn occasions with contrived poses and fashion comments.

Teens post pictures of themselves dressed in suits or black dresses, sometimes pouting, sometimes, oddly, smiling, and then they tack on hashtags such as #funeral or #funeralselfie.

yeah its just the new gay word that everybody has been using lately. But like yolo and swag, the popularity will die out. Although this one really is particularly annoying to me and I don't know why

Damn, the funeral selfie thing is just sad. Probably a case of teens being so emotionally isolated from the people around them that they don't have an outlet when things actually happen in their life.

its the main manoeuvre in the attention whoring vehicles of Facebook, Instagram etc.

people love themselves some them.

this shit (caring about day to day randomness and feeling the need to share it) will level off in the next few years once hipsters deem it camp.

Lord knows I can hardly wait for the day as I fight off vomit which rushes up my oesophagus on every third Facebook post I read.

Its always the same:

Look at me doing something.
Look at me here.
Look at me I have friends.
Man life's so rad!!!

Those people are always the most deranged in real life too.

We are living in the era of stupid f*cks thinking they're special. Everyone HAS to have a FB or there must be something wrong with them. If you use social media regularly, you MUST post about "fantastic" things you're doing. Everyone has to know every small detail about your daily life. "Eating @ McD's #BigMac #I'm300lbs #EarlyHeartAttackHereICome #LookAtMyDuckFacelollmaorofl"
In the funeral self-portraits posted earlier, the first one is of some dumbass kid smiling while posing in front of his grandmother's open coffin. The caption says something about him not knowing his dead grandmother is in the background. Wtf? Did he not review the pic before sharing it with the entire f*cking world?
I am mortified by the very thought that one day our world leaders will be dumb f*cks from our current generation. Expect wars to be thrown over comments made online, folks.

UD has to be wrong on that one.

I know for sure I've heard it for longer than a year.

I'm sure it's been around even longer. Probably when phones had cameras. The word swag has been around since I was a teenager

My point is that it's turned into a hip word to say now

:oldlol: well maybe we're not as hip in Philadelphia. I already pointed out I am a dinosaur. My point wasn't when this word originated, it's how it's a pop culture term now. I've heard it more used in this last couple of weeks than I ever have.
Seems like other posters are agreeing :confusedshrug:

I am to date with the slang and trends for the most part, but it's weird to me. I hate getting my picture taken as a focused subject so I guess that ties in as to why I don't like selfies.

Would you agree that the actual term "selfie" is become a trendy pop culture word now than it's ever been?

I don't think the word selfie has ever been commonly used. It could have been one of those overly cute nicknames couples use on one another like snookems. So yes, it is considered a trendy pop word at the moment.
