OKC is shedding a collective tear as we speak.

Why would OKC give a f*** after how well Steven Adams played in the preseason? Now they've got a 20 year old rookie under lock for at least 4 more years. To get Gortat they would have had to trade away someone like Lamb (making them even thinner in the backcourt) and a 1st round pick.

Instead, now it looks like Adams might actually be a serviceable center from the get-go, and they get to watch him grow and develop on his rookie contract for 4-seasons. Trade for Gortat and there's a possibility they lose some assets AND watch Gortat leave for nothing next Summer.

Gortat is obviously the main piece in this trade and he'll really compliment the rest of the starting lineup but I think Kendall Marshall is a great get for the Wiz. He can be an excellent backup point guard for Wall and a facilitator in a 3 guard lineup. Small ball with Marshall, Wall, Beal, Porter, and Nene/Vesely would be insane.

There is no reason to bring a cancer on board. This team lacks the experience and talent to do much either way. Just because we are going to tank, doesn't mean that the young players can not gain valuable experience.

The Suns made themselves the biggest player in the loaded 2014 NBA draft and put themselves in better position to trade for a major star by making a trade Friday that acquired another first-round pick and injured center Emeka Okafor from Washington for center Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown, Kendall Marshall and Malcolm Lee.

The Suns have settled their 2013-14 roster, made Miles Plumlee a starting center and Ish Smith a backup point guard by completing a trade with the Wizards that could give the Suns four first-round picks in June’s draft. The Suns will have their own and Indiana’s first-round pick for sure but could also have Washington’s pick (protected through 12) and Minnesota’s pick (protected through 13), which could even give the Suns three lottery positions in the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes. The pick the Suns acquired from Washington in Friday’s trade is protected through 10 from 2015 to 2019 with no protection thereafter.

The Suns take on about $370,000 in payroll with the trade but our still well under the cap. Okafor is out indefinitely with a herniated disk in his neck but could return this season. In the meantime, Plumlee’s rapid progress has earned him a chance to be a starting Suns center with Alex Len and Slava Kravtsov backing him.

“Miles Plumlee’s progress is a big reason we did this trade,” Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough said about his fourth trade since July. “Miles was a big part of the deal we did with Indiana. Our coaching staff has been very pleased with Miles. He’s improved every since he left Duke and a lot in the short time he’s been with us.”

The Suns roster is now at 14 and likely finalized for Wednesday’s opening night, meaning shooting guard Dionte Christmas has made his first NBA team.

We coming for you 6ers. My Suns on a serious mood for rookies development, and the upcoming FAgency. Always thought they did good drafting Len and Goodwin last draft. Goodwin is gonna be a steal. Yeah Marshall was a waste of pick, but it was the Suns' way of exiting the Nash's era, moreover they drafted Marshall before they signed Dragic. Marshall was a safety net, though a bad one.

I was thinking the they have too many guards on the roster. Marshall, Goodwin, Ish Smith, Dragic, Beldsoe, Brown, Green, Lee, Dionte Christmas. That's 9 guards right there. Good move to clear the log jam.
Suns gonna fill holes for next season. Fans can expect some big moves. Still feels bad for Gogi.

Absolutely love the direction Ryan McD is taking the Suns right now. Yes, it is clear they are trying to be bad this year, but I love what he's done. No longer are the Suns trying to put bandaids over problems and trying to tread water. They are tearing it all down and are starting from scratch by trading away basically anyone who has real value, and in return are getting picks, and cap flexibility. They just traded Gortat for a first rounder and are taking back an expiring deal. That doesn't happen often. For the first time since the 2010 WCF's I am excited as a Suns fan. At least now there is hope for the future.

I wasn't high on the Len pick, but everything else has been aces. Hopefully we draft well or turn some of these picks into quality players for the future. It will be interesting to see how the front office uses all of this to build the team back up.

Good deal for both sides. Wizards want to win some games short term, but they also don't hurt their long term cap. The pick shouldn't be too high and they don't have a ton of room for a rookie next year anyways.

The Suns get Gortat out of Len's way and get a pick and Okafor is actually a nice mentor for Len

Gortat averaged 16\10\2 two years ago while being one of the better defenders in the NBA.

Last year with the lack of touches he still averaged 12\10 on good defense.

I expect him to have a much better season than last year, and help the Wizards secure a playoff spot.

What don't you like for this by the Wizards, if I may ask? They get rid of a guy who might not even play this season and in return get a consistent double double big man who has shown that he can be durable the past few years.

I understand it's supposed to be a good draft year, and picks are important but I applaud the Wizards for making this move. Shows they're tired of the mediocrity and ready to make a playoff push.

Good move for both sides. The Suns are obviously tanking and the Wiz for a very solid physical center in Gortat. They are building the pieces around Wall so no excuse for Wall not to break out his potential this season and try to be the top 5 team in the east.

JMT
10-26-2013, 03:33 PM
Does that mean Frye will start at the 5?

Yes. They're still committed to bringing Len along slowly. In preseason they had some success pairing Gortat with Plumlee or Len, but because of the offensive shortcomings of both young guys and the fact that Okafor may miss half the season, they'll start Fry in a system that resembles what they did two seasons ago.

It should be absolutely horrible to watch, but it's a great move for the franchise going forward. It's the kind of forward thinking the old regime should have embraced when Amare left instead of trying to piece together crap with Shaq etc.

Emeka doesn't get that any hate for being a bust.

Probably because he's not that much of one, if at all.

First of all, look at that draft and who realistically Charlotte would have chosen. Ben Gordon, Shaun Livingston, and Devin Harris were the next 3 picks. Josh Childress following them (first non guard - not sure if that's relevant). All of them are bigger "busts" than Okafor.

Then his career hasn't been bad at all. He's a legitimate starter in this league. He did win ROY. When he's healthy, he's a high percentage scoring, double-double player, with good defense.

His career outlook might be different if he had not spent his entire career on shitty teams. His best team was that 2011 Hornets squad. Which he played well on.. 10.3/9.5/1.8 blocks .573% FG. Besides that, he has played on some really bad rosters. You would have to be Jordan good to turn those teams into contenders.
