View Full Version : Should I grow a beard?

Or has that ship sailed? I'm not talking about a Harden or Napoli style chin nest, just a regular ole beard. I had a goatee back in the late 90s that had a good run but never sported a true beard.

What's the word on the ISH street?

My wife and I had a big debate about facial hair...here is a fact: WOMEN HATE IT

My wife's mother is a writer, she writes romance novels (aka porn for women) and it was pointed out to me that the one thing that has NEVER been seen in a romance novel is a man with a beard, because the truth is, it is a major turn off for women...and that is just about ALL woman...have you ever heard a woman say "oh what a sexy beard"?

THAT BEING SAID...you're married with kid(s)...not single a dating...so fck it!!! :lol

goatees are weak sauce. Do it if you want to. It will definitely make you look more manly if you can grow a good (i.e. not a lame redsox hotmess) beard. As I recall, you have a weak chin? Helps with that as well.

[QUOTE]Last spring, the scientific community dealt a devastating blow to bearded men and the women who love them. After assessing the facial hair preferences of 227 women, University of New South Wales researchers Barnaby Dixson and Robert Brooks released a study suggesting that straight women deem men more attractive when they are beardless. As The Daily Mail put it: [B]

another study:

Men, you have a simple choice: If you want respect from other men, grow a beard. Aiming to attract a woman? Shave it off.

A study reported in Behavioral Ecology used pictures of men from New Zealand and Samoa in normal poses and making angry faces, both with full beards (over six weeks of growth with no trimming) and sans facial hair, to determine how the men were perceived. Researchers showed the before and after photos to 200 women, and asked the women to rate the men’s attractiveness. It didn’t matter the country — the women found the clean-shaven men significantly more attractive.

I've had lots of girls tell me it's hot and then I get bummed because I can't grow one, then that sadness turns to resentment for people with beards.
I've never heard any woman refer to facial hair as "hot"

I have facial hair myself...so I'm not biased

my wife makes a good point...romance novels are "porn for women" and the fact that there isn't a single romance novel out there that contains a bearded man says something on this issue

woman may say to their mate "oh I love your beard honey"...that means nothing...wives with bald husbands probably tell them they love their bald head too...that is just the equivilent of a man saying "naw you don't look fat in that dress" when they do lol

-p.tiddy-
10-30-2013, 03:18 PM
Well I don't think many women read romance novels... I've only known of one, my friends mom. I think for most women porn is porn.
their is a huge market for them actually, esp with older women

and there is romance novels for younger women too...usually consists of young vampires and such :lol

That's pretty much not true at all. Maybe if you live in some state where women can't handle a real man. :lol

It really depends on the kind of woman you're after. Out where I live, women are more inclined to date a guy with a beard than in other areas of the country. Hell, my brother's girlfriend pretty much made him grow a beard.

I'm rocking a beard and loving it. The only downside is that when I go out for my walks past the school and I'm dressed in dark clothing and a hoodie it seems to frighten little children. :lol But depending on your perspective, little kids not bothering you on your walk could be a good thing.

it is true though reppy....there are plenty of studies to back it up too

here is somewhat of an explianation as to why women hate beards:
[QUOTE]Confused researchers in New Zealand and Canada decided to conduct their own research to see if they could get to the bottom of why women were going against their natural instincts. To conduct their research, they rounded up some hairy men.

19 men with full beards had their picture taken, showing their beards in all their glory. The mighty beards were then shaved off and the men were photographed again

although I always assumed it because of the obvious fact you can't really kiss a woman right sporting a beard...

I've seen studies that say women are more likely to want to have a one night stand with a bearded man than without.

Since when do women want "safe" men? Does that mean you should be a scrawny wimp instead of having muscle because muscle is SCARY and could hurt you?

Scientific Proof That Women Hate Beards (http://gizmodo.com/5893506/scientific-proof-that-women-hate-beards)

here is more explaination:

Nick Neave, a psychologist from Northumbria University, explained to the Daily Mail that a man's ability to grow a beard is nothing to do with making them attractive to women. "[M]ales' faces and bodies are probably mostly designed to fend off other males and what females like is neither here nor there," he explained.

A natural bodybuilder physique? I think most women would go for that.

Go look at how many women went and saw the movie Magic Mike.

Anyway, doing what you do with your life because you're afraid of being "unattractive" to women is stupid. Not saying you're doing this..

Want to grow a beard? Do it. Long hair? Who gives a ****! Just make sure you don't smell like dog shit, your teeth are clean, etc.

There are enough women out there that like every style.

since you brought up "Magic Mike" though...he has no beard, and don't you think it would be odd to see a male stripper with a full beard?...I'm no expert on the male stripper scene but I doubt they rock beards...EVER...because women don't want that, it isn't something they fantasize about.

first, you are assuming some sort of universal standard of beauty. A study of samoan and new zealand women is not very encompassing. Age also plays a role.

Second, when you universally declare that no dudes in romance novels have bears, you come across as a dumbass. You are familiar with every single romance novel ever written? Just type beard and romance novel into google and it will show you that this is false as shit.

finally, I wont generalize my experience beyond what it is, but I know lots of women who like guys with beards. Not stupid duck dynasty shit or sissy goatees, but a well kept trimmed beard.

and here are a bunch of shite studies that refute your shite studies. so there you go.

A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of New South Wales and published in Evolution and Human Behavior found that women found men with beards — specifically 10-day-old beards — more attractive. Not just that but guys with full-beards were perceived as better and more protective fathers.

Both men and women had to rate the faces with varying levels of facial hair growth (clean-shaven, five-day stubble, 10-day stubble and full beards). While guys thought clean shaven looked better than a short, five-day beard, women actually rated smooth faces as the least attractive

A clean shaven man may be easier on the eyes for some women, but I bet just as many women prefer a man with facial hair. Every single woman I've dated has preferred my bearded look over clean shaven. This includes my first gf who started dating me when I was clean shaven. Now that I'm married, I've shaven it all off for my wife because she wanted to see how I would look, she loved it at first, but then made me grow it back.

heavy stubble, followed by full beard (grown out), then light stubble, and a clean shaven face the least attractive. My point is that these studies are not really reliable as overall cultural indicators. Blanket statement like no women find facial hair attractive (or all women do, etc) are ignorant and unsupportable. Who reads romance novels? Old women, who were enculturated in an age when beards were counter-culture, commie or otherwise not-mainstream in the US. Do you really think this generational view translates to todays 20 something? In my experience it does not. Again, my point isnt that there are tons of dudes with heavy stubble/ kempt beards on bodice rippers, just that there are clearly some.

Me and my friends think besides the beard I look nothing like him though.

My girlfriend doesn't like it when I shave mine off, I prefer when it's a bit shorter than it is right now but I'm lazy and can't be bothered trimming it. I hate when it's clean shaven though. all those say "10-day" growth to be specific..."stubble" is NOT a "beard"

women of all ages read romance novels, they are extremely popular right now for all age groups...I'm not just saying that, look it up

My wife's mother is the head of a romance novel group in Dallas, she has written dozens of them, and she has told me that the one thing you never see in romance novels is beards...and that includes both "YOUNG-ADULT" to adult...she explained that women's fantasy's don't include bearded men...women like to be kissed, and beards make for horrible make out sessions...etc

you found ONE out of literally a million...and it was from the 60s too...just think about that...don't you think if women wre turned on by beards it would be shown in covers, male-strippers, magazines, etc?

The beard gives the Boozehound an appearance to match his inner wisdom with his MISSION to become da professor, it gives the macmac the pimp edge to FINANCIALLY RUN THINGZ in montreal, it gives me the strength to tap into the reservoirs of strength of past Muslim warriors, it gives RIDONKS the distinguished respected look to bring credibility to his opinions and discourse on various subjects, and it will give RUFUS the fresh new manly look that will propel him OUT OF HIS MIDLIFE CRISIS into the deep rooted spirit of the European Renaissance man which he will B.E.C.O.M.E.

THE EDGE.

What the hell Prime.

This is worse than when you vehemently denied that Olive Garden reheated some of their products. That was a hot mess.

I can't believe you just said that, man. You're one of the most important posters here too.

Anyways Rufus hell yes. I bet your daughter would love it too.

You best watch yourself, aint nobody getting away with talking bad about Olive Garden when prime is around. :oldlol:

It was a trainwreck to see a grown man VICIOUSLY LASH out in denial as his Heroic Restaurant was exposed for it's imminent flaws. Not even those whose illusions of Santa Claus or their faith would have spazzed out on their keyboards to that extent.

:lol

Straight up bullshit. Some woman are crazed about facial hair.

This hottie has stated over and over again that she was attracted to him, because of his beard. She loves the lumberjack look. So one person's opinion doesn't quality for the rest of the population.

And to Rufus, how old are you? And can you grow a legit beard, or one of those patchy ones?

seriously would you not agree this is rare?

I'm generalizing obviously I know there is probably a small % of women with a beard fetish but they are in the vast minority I think...

so... back to the topic.

i've seen a theory somewhere which proposes that man lost his fur over time because naked skin is an easy indicator of parasites (like ticks, fleas, lice, etc). so nakedness not only helps others do a visual check, it's also useful in and of itself to cut down on infestation.

a furry state was probably man's regular condition for 99%+ of his history. but nakedness is apparently more attractive, so that's apparently how we evolved.

i'm thinking stubble is probably attractive because it indicates a person is well-groomed (includes the benefits of nakedness), there's paradoxically a roughness / rawness conveying strength / grittiness, and there's even the attractiveness of the furry pet aspect... of long stubble and light beard.

anyway, rufus, where lies the pic of you in order to answer this crucial question?

No it is not rare. Besides, most guys dont rock giant beards like that, but rather something like this. http://www.murdocklondon.com/tmm/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/George-Clooney12466y.jpg

I have had a beard since I was 18 and have had plenty of women tell me they love it, even just in passing at a bar. I think there are some women who cant stand it (rare) and some women who love it (perhaps rare as well). Most women dont care enough.

Though, I was having a conversation with two women yesterday and they both expressed a preference for bearded men (the one wont let her husband shave his off). I think your perspective is skewed by where you live and the type of women you associate with ( mine may be as well, though I have lived in ~10 different states for at least a year)

okay answer me this then please, seriously...if what you are saying is true, and there are lots of women who prefer beards, why is it that almost every form of "romantic entertainment" made for women excludes bearded men?

As for women liking it, I never considered growing a full beard until my wife mentioned how much she liked them.

I have a full beard, but I can't get a long one, once it's past a certain length, it gets crazy scraggly. My beard also comes in a different color than my head hair.

This stuff keeps it under control to a certain length.

There is no "women love beards" or "women hate beards." It's all relative, and I doubt there are many women that would make a decision as to whether or not to get involved with a guy based on his facial hair, provided that it's not unkept.

Women have preferences but are willing to overlook a lot of physical things if they are hearing what they want to hear from the man. The saying is, men are turned on by what they see, women are turned on by what they hear.

I def respect da beard, and again I have facial hair, I am not biased here at all...but I don't think "it's all relative" at all really...or that it women love beards and clean shaven "equally"...I 100% believe that the "majority" prefer clean shaven (which is why 99% of men on "romance media" are clean shaven)...and I also think that if you are single and dating you will have much better odds without a beard...unless of course your face is just ugly and the beard hides that fact.

If you're married, and done with the whole "make-out" phase...then sure okay, I can see the wifey saying "you look better with facial hair"...but I 100% think that when dating the majority of women aren't searching for bearded men.

Yeah, I can definitely understand why most women wouldn't want their man to have much (if any) facial hair. Just really inconvenient for women lol. It is a fair tradeoff tho because women basically have to shave every part of their body.

I have really shitty facial hair but I usually let it go until it is more than just stubble (takes like 2-3 days) simply because I'm lazy. I don't see myself ever rocking a goatee or any other style because I am just too damn lazy.

this is very different from your initial extreme view. You need to condition your facial hair (you dont have a beard obviously, so what do you have? a soul patch, mustache?) if its too scratchy. Again, my personal experience runs completely counter to your personal experience. I have gotten lucky explicitly because I have a luxurious, soft, trim beard.

okay, I stated yesterday I know I was generalizing...obviously not ALL women literally "hate" beards...my first post in here was "extreme" you're right. I'll make this statement, which can be taken literally. I fully believe "the vast majority of women who are actively dating prefer clean shaven men over men with full beards". And I would guess somewhere over 90% of actively dating women, and I feel like I am playing it safe with that number.

and I am fairly positive I am a "good kisser" because in just about every relationship I am in it is always me who gets tired of making out first...Girls love to kiss...guys don't nearly as much (yes that is generalizing too). If I liked to make out even half as much as my wife I would be clean shaven. Foreplay is something many women need though, and beards really get in the way of that.

so, of all the women who would date me, I lost 90% of them because of my handsome and trim beard? That is total bogus. Also, not really claiming you are a bad kisser (prove it big boi), but a trim beard really doesnt get in the way of kissing
