I just wanna hear some music other people like. Right now I'm listening to a lot of slow, depressing sounding stuff. Probably the change of weather makes it more appealing.

Anyway, I'll kick this off by providing the metal perspective.

Warning - Footprints (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=774GvRN2yKk)

Woods of Ypres - Traveling Alone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUUL2MuwuN4)

Woods of Ypres - Silver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_IHItcjNto)

Woods of Ypres - Alternate Ending (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgrmXIrPQeQ)

That last song is especially depressing, because the singer died in a car accident shortly before this, their break through album, came out. It almost seems like he's describing his death before it happened.

Swallow the Sun - The Giant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZY6nNNGQME)

Anaal Nathrakh - When the lion devours both dragon and child (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxCq8-vnvW0)

This is a little more aggressive. Okay, a lot more aggressive. This is one of the few bands I can only listen to in small spurts otherwise the onslaught of the music just starts to overwhelm me.

Bonus non-metal song Aesthetic Perfection - All Beauty Destroyed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptINdWHLtX4)

Alright, I wanna hear some of what you guys like now. Doesn't have to be metal.

Good stuff. I'm digging the first track here. Their style really reminds me of something, but I can't put my finger on it. The bass in the background is really nice, too.

i'm not in to metal like OP, but i've always tended to like minor chord songs.

IMO music can be a powerful tool to express and articulate your feelings, and sad songs are no different. here's a couple of my faves by george harrison:

Give Me Love. somehow it's upbeat and sad at the same time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-KAvPbO8JY

Isn't it a Pity. i love how this song slowly builds in power until becoming a wall of sound.

I love The Beatles. I think they're actually my all-time favorite band. I used to have this insane collection with over 100 hours of live performances, weird B-Sides, goof ups, variations of songs, etc, stuff like that.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a favorite of mine.

16 Horsepower - Harm's Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQo8pfbOm_Y)

This isn't metal. They're sort of a folk band, I guess. I don't know if this song is necessarily sad or depressing or what. But I get such a strange sensation when I listen to it. And it isn't a positive feeling I get.

Carolina Chocolate Drops - Leaving Eden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itTJhMSDe3U)

No metal either. An awesome folk band. This song literally gives me the chills. I was fortunate enough to have seen this band perform live a couple years back. They're great and deserve all the praise they get.

Thursday - Full Collapse - Understanding in a Car Crash

The band wrote the song about a friend they lose in a car crash. I saw them perform it live back in 2005 (I think) and it was amazing. You can feel the emotion in the song and how much it means to them.

That's rough. The band I started off with, Woods of Ypres, had their singer die in a car accident and it ended the band. My friend that does a yearly metal festival out here in Portland, Oregon had them booked to play and everything. Then the singer died. Sucks. :(

Happy Birthday - Flipsyde

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bQG8v8kTGs

Man, that's pretty rough. Especially as I reach the age where I'm actually getting the really strong urge to have kids of my own.

Here's another song that I really dig. Pretty messed up lyrics, though.

Lupe Fiasco - Little Weapon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rKmdRdNO7s)

Evergrey - In Remembrance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPekddqz7Rs[/URL)

This one is pretty sad, too. Vocalist is great IMO.

Nevermore - The Heart Collector (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-5T1L23q2k)

This is, in my opinion, one of the finest metal albums ever crafted. This song comes from the album "Dead Heart in a Dead World". I think it's a song even non-metal folks would enjoy (the vocals aren't harsh or anything and the guy has an awesome voice).

Nevermore to feel the pain
The heart collector sang
And I won't be feeling hollow for so long
Nevermore to feel the pain
The words fall out like fire
I'll believe when you can't believe anymore

That f***in' chorus, man. So damn good. Amazing guitar work, too.

I was growing a little worried that people were becoming too happy on ISH. So now I have another set of tunes for ya'll.

Woods of Ypres - Finality (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI9iRfCdiIQ)

Really, if you only listen to one song I make in this post.. this should be it. This song gives me the chills. I've probably listened to it like 50 times in the past 2 days.

When we have all gone, to the silence of eternity...
To first be forgotten, and lost in, the records of the earth
Could I still miss you, then, in the time and space after life
When no one is searching anymore, and where we are nowhere to be found

We didn't spend our life together
and I will miss you forever

The choice was mine, To long for a time, that will never come
Though we leave the world apart, I, still went peacefully, quietly,
with you, still, firmly... in my heart.

I will wait forever. I wait...

:(

Bonus: There are a couple cool covers of this song, here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gw5U3AnwELc) and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKnY2f_rpRA).

The Wounded - Smells Like Teen Spirit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSFoo7iAauA)

A very slow and heavy cover of Nirvana's track from a doom/goth metal band.

Primordial - Gallows Hymn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4pUaEQz_Aw)

Doom/black metal band that focuses mostly on historical events and times. Clean vocals make it a little easier to get into for people that dislike growls/screams/whatever.

Thanks for all the posts. I try to listen to everything that gets posted.

To the people that have posted songs but offered no explanation, would you care to offer one? Why does the song come across as sad? Is it the lyrics? The voice? Perhaps the sound of the instruments? Do any of the lyrics stand out or strike you as having powerful emotions behind them? Does a song remind you of a situation or person?

Yea it's very applicable to my life. I'm certainly no failure or anything but I haven't created a family of my own and my life has been a little unconventional. I can relate. Overall, I'm blessed and been very happy in many areas but there have been periods where I had to ask myself, " What happened to my optimism and desire for the nuclear American ideal?"

The Antlers - Kettering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4DBi3fUYEQ)

The reason I posted that is because it is basically the saddest song I have ever heard. The album it is from is a semi-biographical documentation of the lead singer watching his girlfriend die in hospice care. The lyrics for Kettering are pretty devastating.

The back story behind the Eric Clapton song is his son had crawled off a hotel balcony and died at 4

Runaway Train is written about kids who runaway from home and have resorted to drugs. They look desperately for somebody to save them and bring them out but they've become too addicted that it leads to suicide.

I guess I never became aware of this until having my son which opened my eyes to these lyrics and feel the pain of losing a child. These sons were hits when I was a teen so I really looked at these tunes as yawners, never really looked at the meaning

First, I think this is a great thread.

The song I would like to add to this thread is called "Ready for Love" by India Arie. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxkMlS2nuU8)

I recently fell in love with this song after watching the video. She sings it with so much emotion and it seems like she really means what she's singing. There's a part between 2:53 to 3:27 where she just seems so vulnerable and it makes me feel a certain way inside. I'm not even attracted to her, but the way she looks when she's speaking those words really gets to me. I just want to comfort her and give her what she wants.

I know most of the guys on here are unemotional "tough guys" but take the time to watch this video if you get the chance. It just shows how emotional women can be and how strong the feel about finding love and things like that. As a man, sometimes its good to try to see things from a woman's point of view.

Thanks for the song. I think it's cool that she also plays an instrument. Seems in popular media today a lot of females in the music biz don't do that. I sort of consider them to be entertainers as opposed to actual musicians or artists.. but that's a rant for another day.

And, are you sure it's not just her voice but the combination of her voice and the look she's giving the camera during that time? :D
