Think they made it to the checkpoint with the metal detector if I'm not mistaken. Havent read up on it just heard what happened. If that is the case its not hard to get a gun in an airport. If they got past checkpoints then something is fishy.

something similar happened to me on my way to nyc when i was at iah just a few months ago. a gunman made it to the first checkpoint, pulled out a gun, shot it in the air, and then just shot himself. crazy guy, but at least he didnt hurt anyone else.
