A balanced scoring attack helped give the Cleveland Cavaliers enough to win their opening game for a second straight season. A 2-0 start has been a little more rare.

Cleveland will try to accomplish that feat for the first time in seven seasons when it visits the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night.

The Cavaliers had seven players with at least nine points, led by Tristan Thompson's 18, but it needed Anderson Varejao's jumper with 28 seconds left and Kyrie Irving's four late free throws for a 98-94 win over visiting Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Irving had 15 points -- despite missing 12 of 16 shots -- along with nine assists and seven rebounds. Varejao scored five of his 11 points in the final 1:43.

"It was a gritty, grimy, ugly game, just how I like it and it was fun," said coach Mike Brown, who returned to the Cleveland bench after two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. "I think our guys enjoyed it."

Cleveland also got a brief glimpse of new center Andrew Bynum, who played in his first game since the 2012 playoffs with the Lakers.

Bynum was traded to Philadelphia in August of that year but never played a minute for the 76ers because of problems with his knees. He signed a two-year contract with Cleveland in July, and had three points, three rebounds, two blocks and two assists in less than eight minutes.

The Cavaliers, who are seeking their first 2-0 start since the 2006-07 season, are expected to limit Bynum's minutes for the near future.

"We don't want to rush him," Brown said. "We want to make sure as best we can that we take our time and do this thing the right way."

The Bobcats also have a new center in Al Jefferson, but he is out for this game after re-aggravating his right ankle.

Jefferson signed a three-year, $41 million deal with the struggling franchise in July. After missing much of the preseason with a sprained right ankle, he had 13 points on 6-of-19 shooting and eight rebounds in his debut Wednesday, a 96-83 loss in Houston.

Charlotte shot just 36.7 percent and went 1 of 9 from the field during Houston's pivotal 14-4 run in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats concluded the 2012-13 season by shooting 50.7 percent in a 105-98 home victory over Cleveland that snapped a six-game skid in the series.

Kemba Walker led the way with 24 points in that win and Josh McRoberts matched a career high with 20 while making all six shots, including three from 3-point range. McRoberts had a team-best 15 points Wednesday.

Irving is shooting 55.7 percent in five career games against Charlotte, tied for his third-best against any opponent. He averaged 26.3 points and made 10 of 18 3-pointers in last season's three meetings.

tl;dr

- Al Jefferson is out, will not play tonight
- Bynum likely to play tonight, and sit out tomorrow @Indiana. Mike Brown expects Bynum to play about the same 8 minute ceiling limit as Wednesday.

Cavs need to learn how to play with a center, you have all sorts of advantages with a big man like Bynum in the game but you need to know how to capitalize on them. Cavs can't just feed him and expect him to score by himself, they need to put at least one guard up top in front of him so he can have the option to pass back out if he isn't feeling the shot down low or if he gets doubled he can hit the open man. A couple possessions ago they fed him and all the players ran clear to the wrong side of the court and he had literally no one to pass too. Also Kyrie's pass to him on his attempted P&R was way too low. Hopefully these mistakes will be realized by the team and begin to happen less and less.

I know it's two games into the season, but a couple things.

The Cavaliers defense starts off horrible in the first quarter the first two games. It's like they need time to adjust by the second half, and by that tim they're fighting for the lead when they should've be if they'd start off good to begin with

Irving has struggled mightily with his shot. He's not hit 1 three pointer in the first two games. 0-5. And he's 9 for 15 from the line. Missed two freethrows in a row tonight that would've tied the game. Makes me feel like he got in shape this off-season, but he broke his shot somehow. Again, I know it's just the second game.

Bynum had some nice moves, still rusty of course. Got more minutes this game.

Brown kept Waiters out the end of the game. A bad move I think. Grant it, jack was helping offensively, but that was when Irving was out of the game. Jack let Walker burn him twice for three with his hand down and too much space. And the last three cost us the game. Should've had Waiters in and I was screening for Waiters to come in with 4 minutes left.

Thompson has been playing like an all-star so far 21/11 tonight.

Can't be clutch when Jack decides to chuck up a air ball.

That is so what happened last year with the Jack-Curry combo. Don't get me wrong, Jack hit his fair share of clutch shots but often late in games he played like "**** Curry, gimme all this".

we could be in pretty good shape this year. tristan isnt gonna average 20-10, but if he can hit these shots with some regularity, we could be a nice team. there is no way kyrie is gonna be this mediocre all year, and bynum (hopefully) gets in better shape, because when hes out there he is a huge factor. jack is better than any bench player we had last year (even if that last 3 was indefensible).

clarke has had a tough start. he cant dribble, and he settles for jumpers way too much. and for an athletic guy, his activity level isnt great.

bennett had a quietly terrible game. really bad defense, (as AC pointed out), settled for tons of threes, gave up position on the boards.

the first game, he started out aggressive, but turned it over a bunch on ill advised drives, but then his a good few jumpers in the second half, and his defense was great. he had a pretty good game

nothing really jumped out from this game, tbh i was surprised to see he played that few minutes

i think brown just knew that he could get away with playing jack at the 2, since henderson is a smallish shooting guard.
