View Full Version : Why do players jump on Wade's fake?

I've seen it earlier, but I was watching 'The Clinic" video (one of the best mixes ever) and players are jumping on fake/step back on 3 pointers. I guess it's just a reflex because he does it so well but the coach has to be saying "DONT FALL FOR WADE'S FAKE'. You want him taking a long jumper, not putting him at the line or getting a potential and 1.

Why do people respond to emails from nigerian princes claiming to give you a fortune if you pay them a small sum?

The world will never know

I'm sure the scouting report says if he dribbles left he is going to show the ball before he shoots but Wade has crazy timing of knowing that once a defender changes direction his reflexes dominate and his conscious mind shuts down for a few seconds and abandons the mission.

It's interesting that Wade's fta's are up so igh. He's averaging 8.2 fta right now on 13.3 shot attempts. He hasn't average over 8 fta's since the 2010-2011 season and he was taking 15 more shot attempts that season. He seems to be attacking the rim a lot now this season. Him and Ray are a good 1 2 combo at sg. Ray is averaging a nice 11.5ppg 4.0apg 0.8topg .516FG% .423%3fg and weak for him (lol) ..857%ft.

If you played basketball, you'd understand how long it takes before correctly and quickly recognizing fakes. There were guys at the playground that used fakes so well, I would fall for them each and every time.

Because for most players it will be only way they will be on a highlight.

People can't help it.

It's like that Steve Smith move, you know it's coming but you just can't help going for it.

Plus in the heat of the game you don't really think straight

It's a very underrated skill and Wade has absolutely mastered it. His timing, instincts, and selling of the fake make it nearly impossible not to bite on. The fact that every player in the league is aware of it yet still routinely fall for it is remarkable. It's also remarkable how often he hits the shot for the and one.

Because he sells the move well. Same goes for Kobe, and many others ... it's harder to think rationally when defending these amazingly skilled athletes who perform said moves very quickly right in front of your eyes ... and you're stuck having to be reactive.

At this point for Wade I wouldn't be leaving the ground. I'd still try to get a hand in his face but I'm trying my hardest to avoid jumping.

Quick trivia, Wade said he learned about the pump fake watching Sam Cassell growing up

because he is a world-class basketball player and that what those elite guys do?

It's like saying:

why do players fall for Iverson's crossover?
why do players jump at the Dream Shake?
why can't players stop MJ's fadeaway?
why do players bite on pass fakes?
why do professionals miss free throws?

it looks extra easy for people from the outside looking in.

Kirk Hinrich stopped 8 years ago. He held Wade in check for years.

I don't care what anyone says...nobody should be falling for his shot fake anywhere near the 3point line, if he wants that shot, let him have it, get a hand in his face if you can. Around the free throw line, then I can see falling for it but nobody should be scared of Wade consistently hitting long jump shots....

How many people actually fall for Wade's fake? He takes 8 FTA per game, 6 in the past 2 seasons. Means about 3 to 4 fouls from the opposition. Surely he got some legit fouls in there. So about once or twice a game people fall for his fakes that resulted in FT. Doesn't seem like a big deal.
