View Full Version : Super Typhoon in the Phillippines: Winds up to 235 mph!!!!

Damn.

Super Typhoon Haiyan, which slammed into the Philippines early Friday morning, is one of the strongest storms ever recorded on the planet. Here are some fast facts about the storm: (http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2013/11/07/super-typhoon-philippines/3468165/)
Super Typhoon Haiyan has winds of 195 mph and gusts of 235 mph. This is one of the highest wind speeds ever recorded in a storm in world history.

• The strength of Haiyan is equal to that of an extremely powerful Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. (Typhoons are the same type of storms as hurricanes).

• No hurricane in the Atlantic has ever been this strong.

• It's possible Haiyan could become the strongest storm ever recorded to make landfall, anywhere on Earth.

• The storm is over 300 miles wide: The width is about equal to the distance between Boston and Philadelphia.

About 10 million people live on the central Philippine islands and are most at risk of a direct strike from Haiyan.

• A storm surge as high as 15 feet is possible in some parts of the Philippines.

• A 50-mile wide swath of 8+ inches of rain is predicted to cross the central Philippines, which will lead to dangerous flash floods and mudslides.

Scary stuff. A storm surge as big as Hurricane Sandy's with much higher winds.

Hurricane Sandy strongest point was when the low pressure hit 940 mbar before it hit land was like 970 when it did.

This is well below that at 895 mb pressure. No storm has ever hit land at this strength before. (http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2573) Just saw a hurricane expert say the devastation near the coast "will be complete."

so the super typhoon likely made landfall with winds near 195 mph. This makes Haiyan the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in world history.....

Extreme damage likely in the Philippines
Wind damage in Guiuan (population 47,000) must have been catastrophic, perhaps the greatest wind damage any city on Earth has endured from a tropical cyclone in the past century. A massive storm surge must have also caused great destruction along a 20-mile swath to the north of where the eye hit,

doesn't matter how much time they had. much of the country is so poor and the infrastructure is so bad that they would have nowhere to go. praying for my friends there and the entire pacific rim. casualties are going to be massive :(

You can see these storms coming days in advance but the problem with these typhoons/tropical storms is that it's pretty hard to predict when it's an exceptional one. The Philippines are hit by what, 30 odd potential typhoons a year? It's not very feasible to mount massive evacuations for a threat that is so common.

It's A VC3!!!

i was reading about this storm this morning. i couldn't find how many casualties they expect? i hope the number is not high, nor the cost of the storm. the philippines will receive american aid but i hope it's not overly-expensive.

If it's actually the "strongest ever recorded" that makes it hard to predict no? The strongest typhoon last year caused close to 2000 casualties in the Philippines, but that's an exceptionally high number.

Well, from my limited anecdotal experience they are very fickle. The strength, trajectory and speed can change quite dramatically within a 12 hour window.
okay, thanks. i recall we had more time with sandy, although of course that was a different storm. i suppose there's no easy warning formula for this stuff.

i figure these storms are only going to get worse in coming years, though, which is a second reason why i find this one pretty terrifying.

My wife and two sons are in Cebu right now. I can't get in touch with them right now. Probably by tomorrow after the storm passes through. Luckily they are in the countryside up in the mountains. No need to worry about flooding there..only mudslides. When I heard this news it got me sick to my stomach. But I feel confident that they are ok. This storm is humongous. It's pretty much covering the whole P.I.

Everybody needs to get to their red cross and give something, even 5 dollars is going to do something positive.

These poor people, reading there were entire tent cities gone... The earthquake created so many homeless they were living in tents and makeshift housing and many had no place to go when the typhoon came ashore... those that survived lost literally everything.

It's surreal because you always see and feel for those who go through these tragic events but when it happens to your own....it's a nightmare.

There are dead bodies every where....and the Govt has yet to reach out to the more rural areas. Many people have gone with out food or water for days now. There are no medical options there is also no law. Looting is happening very where.

some people have already ambushed Red Cross volunteers. in response, one city Mayor who have sent relief teams have ordered his teams to shoot people in the foot if they are ambushed.

atm machines have been broken into and every supermarket and convenience store ransacked. it's kind of depressing that some of the items looted were non-food items. people were seen stealing TV sets, luxury bags, cell phones.

and the looting started just a day after the storm. it's not like people were already driven into hunger. it was like the people there were just looking for a reason to loot. makes you think about what would happen really when law and order starts to breakdown and there's no one to stop people from acting out their savagery.

not really, the BIR will only not tax if its coursed through Goverment agencies like the DSWD, if it goes through any other source it will get taxed, and no one wants to let the relief goods go through goverment hands lest the f@cking politicians use it again for there ulterior motive

i was talking about this article:

Donations from foreign countries will not be taxed and will only require, among other documents, a letter of intent to donate goods, bill of Lading or airway bill, and a packing list and/or a commercial invoice for its immediate release.
The streamlined procedure was posted on the BOC website (http://customs.gov.ph/news/2013/11/12/processingreleasing-of-foreign-donated-shipments/) on Tuesday.

so i guess they don't really have to go through gov't agencies to get exempted from taxes

Storm Surges are pretty terrifying, they are similar to a tsunami. A Tsunami might move faster though

In Tacoloban the waves were 20 feet high. (http://www.firstpost.com/world/typhoon-haiyan-how-tsunami-like-storm-surges-undid-preparations-1223135.html)

Initial reports were saying that most of the people killed in the storm surge were killed by trauma, not drowing. They died because they smashed into something or something smashed into them

my girlfriend lost her grandmother in the storm. exactly the case, was killed by a falling tree that crushed her house.

Anyone checked on Lebron23?

Lightweight would be blown of the face of the earth with his size.

If the typhoon manages to kill the Marcos family, then I'd say its incoming destruction will deliver about a surprising gift.
