After ineffective play inside led to a disheartening loss, the Brooklyn Nets put forth a dominant performance in the paint to help Jason Kidd notch his first win as coach.

They'll try to exploit the Washington Wizards' suspect interior defense Friday night.

The Nets (2-2) were stunned in a 107-86 defeat at Orlando on Sunday, Kidd's first game on the bench after serving a two-game suspension due to a drunk driving charge. They managed just 26 points in the paint and shot 38.2 percent overall.

Brooklyn bounced back to score a season-high 58 points in the paint in a 104-88 home victory over Utah on Tuesday. Brook Lopez scored 19 of his 27 in the first half and shot 10 of 13 for the game.

The Nets, trying to avoid their first 0-3 road start since 2009-10, had been outscored by 28 points in the paint in the first three contests.

"I think as a team that's what we talked about yesterday. When we looked, you know we were kind of a jumping shooting team (in Orlando)," Kidd said. "Yesterday's practice was, the only way you could score was by getting the ball in the paint and the drills and the things that we did. The focus carried over to tonight."

Lopez totaled 24 points and 7-of-22 shooting in his past two games against Washington, but the Wizards (1-3) are one of the worst teams in the league in interior defense, surrendering 52.0 points in the paint per game.

They're also allowing opponents to shoot 50.2 percent from the floor, though they're coming off a 116-102 win at Philadelphia on Wednesday -- five days after the 76ers knocked them off in their home opener.

Washington was again outscored in the paint, 42-38, but hit a franchise-record 18 3-pointers on 33 attempts. John Wall led the attack from long distance with a career-best five 3-pointers while scoring 24 points. Six Wizards made at least one 3.

Wall entered as a career 25.8-percent 3-point shooter and had never hit more than three in a game.

"It's something I worked on this summer," Wall said. "Some games they're gonna fall, some games they're not. They were doubling in the post off me. I just had to be confident and be able to knock them down and tonight they went in."

Brooklyn allowed its first three opponents to hit 41.3 percent of their 3-point attempts before limiting Utah to a 4-for-18 performance.

Washington, which had averaged 18.7 turnovers in its three losses, committed 11 in its first victory.

Paul Pierce has scored 61 points over his last two games against the Wizards while going 20 for 37 from the field.

Deron Williams has averaged 24.1 points in his last eight contests against Washington while hitting 50.0 percent of his 3-point attempts.

The Nets have won five of the past seven meetings.

My 2 cents: The interesting thing about this game is this is a team that wants to push the pace, albeit a team not playing well. Will it have an impact on what the Nets are trying to do? Can a (very) inferior team stick with the Nets just by exploiting their weaknesses? Unlike the Jazz, the Wizards actually try to win games. A loss here heading into the Pacer showdown would be a bit disheartening.

I'm looking for Deron to pick his performance up, starting tonight. He's passed the ball really well but has missed a lot of layups and mid-range shots and he needs to make those otherwise the opposing defense is not paying the price the way they should. Also, I know Joe is playing alongside a lot of other shooters but he needs to be a bit more assertive. He had two points in the loss to the Magic and that is unacceptable for any starter in the NBA, let alone a $120 million man.

1) Brook Lopez is both our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. He's our most consistent scorer, however his inability to guard the pick and roll and his inability to grab a rebound are really hurting us.

2) IDK if it's the offense, or Derons injury or respect for his teammates, but Deron really needs to just be let lose. I'm tired of all these set plays and just swinging the ball. Let Deron run the pick and role and penetrate and create for everyone because this really isn't working.

3) What is with these half assed pick and rolls? You'll see the big man come and set the pick and then the ball handler just picks up the ball and holds it deciding what to do. When the offensive player sets a pick, ball handler needs to keep moving or there really isn't a point.

4) We need a more consistent way of scoring in the paint other than ISO Lopez. Pick and Roll, cutting, whatever.

Again it's only the 5th game, but unless Lopez learns how to guard the pick and roll and rebound and Kidd let's Deron off his leash, this team isn't going anywhere.

Players arent robots, it does take time to gel and for everyone to learn offensive and defensive schemes, if you've played anything in your life you would know that. Hell, Kidd is still working which schemes and tactics to use, what rotations, etc.

We will truly see what Nets are capable off in 2nd half of the season at earliest, or even in the Playoffs. Sometimes it takes couple of years (like for Heat), etc.

The best defense in NBA by Pacers is Def Rtg: 90.7 (1st of 30)

Offense:
Clippers - Off Rtg: 112.8 (1st of 30)

Granted, its very small sample of games and even smaller sample of Nets starters minutes, but potential is huge, just isnt maximized yet. Especially lacking is proper bench chemistry.

Again it's only the 5th game, but unless Lopez learns how to guard the pick and roll and rebound and Kidd let's Deron off his leash, this team isn't going anywhere.
D-will running set plays doesn't limit his game, It actually helps him out a lot, as long as those plays are effective like in Utah.

Players arent robots, it does take time to gel and for everyone to learn offensive and defensive schemes, if you've played anything in your life you would know that. Hell, Kidd is still working which schemes and tactics to use, what rotations, etc.

We will truly see what Nets are capable off in 2nd half of the season at earliest, or even in the Playoffs. Sometimes it takes couple of years (like for Heat), etc.

Granted, its very small sample of games and even smaller sample of Nets starters minutes, but potential is huge, just isnt maximized yet. Especially lacking is proper bench chemistry.

Even Andray said in his postgame interview last night, these are games that should be won and create no excuses. The Nets have a lot of smart players and should figure this out rather quickly. If the Nets started out the season playing the Spurs, Bulls, Thunder, etc... than we can say, "ok, it's early". But damn it, look at the competition. There is no way we should be losing close games. These are the games that the Nets experience and talent should win.

I'm going to give this team some time but FFS, they need to wake the **** up and start closing these teams out. They were up by 7 points with three minutes to go in the fourth. How the hell do you still lose? It's infuriating.

The thing about Utah is that they VERY rarely ran set plays on regular offensive possessions. The Utah system was all about reading and reacting.

Garnett and Peirce don't look old at all. They look off their game. Age isn't what's effecting KGs jump shot and Peirce was playing damn well until tonight, but he was sick so it's ok.

We had the same defensive problems in game one yet it has regressed from game one to game five. Why do people think time will automatically cure everything? If that were true then we'd be seeing the nets progress on the offensive end and the defensive end little by little but instead, they are not. The nets are veterans. They know how to communicate and play defense and they are going to do it or they're not.. Simple as that. Losing to this teams is infuriating.. People bailing the Nets out when they have shit losses is even more infuriating.

No ones bailing the Nets out. I'm saying that you need to relax and that it's not time to blow it up after they struggle in the first 5 games and the first game where their starter wasn't on a minute limit. You're completely overreacting, really look at what you're saying.
