A lot of companies use Cisco products, so having a Cisco professional certification would definitely be a good thing. Do you have your CCNA?

Work on getting your CCNA first. If you can, enroll in some classes at a community college that teaches the curriculum; there are troubleshooting questions you won't be able to do without having experience in configuring network devices. Of course, you could always go the braindump route, but it'll be obvious you used one once you need to use the information in the real world. The CCNP is actually 3 tests (advanced routing, advanced switching, and trouble shooting), and I'm starting the classes for them next semester. I got my CCNA a few months ago, and working on getting my CCNA Security and VOIP certs at the end of this year. If you don't have any networking experience, getting ready for the certification test is going to be tedious, but a lot of employers really value Cisco certs. Good luck.

I'd recommend he'd go a step further and get into Network Engineering, and if its his thing, the network security aspect. Threats to security evolve daily, and being on top of that is a position that'll only grow from here.
