View Full Version : Thanasis Antetokounmpo "Greek Streak" Signed By 76ers D-League Team
Euroleague
11-11-2013, 11:02 PM
The Philadelphia 76ers D-League team, the Delaware 87ers, signed Thanasis Antetokounmpo to a contract.
Because he is an international player, and because he is 2014 NBA draft eligible and has not yet been drafted, he cannot be signed by an NBA team.
However, there is a loophole in the NBA rules that allows an NBA team's D-League affiliate to sign such players and keep them on their D-League team until they are no longer draft eligible.
They can then be signed to an NBA contract as long as no other NBA team drafts them. So, the 76ers can then sign Antetokounmpo this summer, when he is no longer draft eligible, if he does not get drafted.
From what I hear, the 76ers, and 2 other NBA teams, have plans to draft him this summer, if he is available.
He is the older brother of Giannis Antetokounmpo. He is a 6-7 215 SF. His nickname is the Greek Streak. He is known for his freak athletic ability and his 44 inch vertical leap.

It's been said that he has been measured with a vertical at that height. He has had his head above the rim numerous times.

Sports photographers these days use every perspective trick in the book to inflate and exaggerate the promoted athleticism of players. Those photographs are misleading for several reasons. All we have to do is watch the highlights you provided which clearly shows that guy's head never ever goes anywhere near rim level.

Angles and a standard dunk literally every single young SF should be able to pull off in this league. Not a single dunk look impressive and nothing even remotely hinted at such a ridiculous vertical. Considering his size and length, he should be able to do retarded dunks without even trying.
I dont care about a kid who has a name I cant pronounce first and last.
How does this D league team thing work for the Sixers? So the players who play for them they have no rights too? They just play there as another option? :confusedshrug:

Is this a joke? His head is nowhere near the rim in either of those pictures. It's just a deceptive camera angle.

This is from an angle which would not help in the illusion. This is legit but not quite over the rim level. Still insane.

No, hoopmixtape of all places is the most frequent abuser of taking advantage of perspective to embellish player verts and athleticism on camera. The camera is crosscourt with a zoom lens, and the dunker in the air is closer to the camera than the rim is too the camera and combined with the placement of the photographer this is ALWAYS going to inflate the appearance of the player and reduce the appearance of the rim. What looks like an imperceptable gap from that angle could realistically be a huge gap to anyone who was up close and saw the dunk happen in person.

I cannot stand that people are more athletic in the modern age
That angle is ABSOLUTELY NOT HELPING IN THE ILLUSION. If it was, the inside back of the rim would be clearly visible and show that it is indeed shot from the ground up to appear as if he's head rim. It's not and you are wrong.
I mean, he's not even head level here and this dude is lauded for his freak athleticism. Exactly what is the issue here? I'm genuinely concern for your well being.

Could I see the link to the vid of him dunking that? He could be closer to the camera lens than the hoop is. Anyways, even if he can get his head to the rim his athleticism doesn't appear to translate into games. Not really explosive if you ask me.

The current word is that NBA teams are absolutely drooling over Thanasis after seeing him up close in just a little bit of playing time in the D-League.
A lot of NBA teams are now supposedly currently planning on taking him in the first round of the draft.

In the Israeli League game between rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv, Sofoklis Schortsanitis went into the crowd after some fans in the stands supposedly used a racial taunt against him........
Here is a link with video of him being escorted out by security:

Here is a story in English:
http://www.eurohoops.net/2014/04/flopping/46139
Sofo attacked the stands of Hapoel
The 83-80 road win of Maccabi Tel Aviv over Hapoel Tel Aviv, for the domestic Israeli league, was marked by the unprofessional behavior of Greek center Sofoklis Shortsanitis. After the end of the game, Big Sofo attacked the stands of the home fans, as you can see in this report and video. According to Maccabi Tel Aviv’s sources, their player was provoked by racist chants, however, this kind of outburst is unacceptable, especially when among the fans there are children, like in this case, the four year old son of Hapoel’s coach, Erez Edelshtein. Sofo was escorted by his teammates to the locker room, while Hapoel is asking for his banishment from the league, until the end of the season.

So the combine lists Greek Freak 2 as having a 39.5 inch vertical, with a top touch of 12 feet.
But, Thanasis is saying that he was only allowed to jump to the 12 foot bar, because of the rules of not specifying beforehand.
But he actually jumped to the next bar at 12 feet 6 inches, putting him at 45.5 inches for his vertical.

At the video link above he is talking about it briefly, starting at the 1:30 mark of the video.
