View Full Version : Recommend me some good movies to watch (Thrillers/Mystery/Action)

I haven't watched a good movie in quite a while. Sometimes I see a trailer that's look like it could be a good movie, but I end up forgetting all about it. So I was hoping you guys could name some movies that you guys have enjoyed. It doesn't have to be new, just good movies in general. 90's and up
I would prefer thriller type movies, but wouldn't mind watching some good comedies. In fact, name some of those super hero movies too......I don't think I've watched any of those. I just want to compile a list a movies I can refer to when I have some free time. Thanks guys!

Netflix movies:
Y Tu Mama Tambien -spanish comedy but has English subtitles, I highly recommend it
Ip Man- awesome martial arts flick
Ip Man 2- same as above
Act of Valor-the actors suck but the action is tight and it depicts navy seals pretty accurately, or at least better than the charlie sheen flick from the 90s
End of Watch- badass cali cop movie, pov type, lot of action
Elite Squad- brazilian cop who is fighting corruption, tons if action
There's more that I'm forgetting but you can always check out the classics and well known movies:
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Fight Club
Black hawk down
Boondock saints

Shutter Island was sorta confusing, that I literally forgot the plot the next day.
'The Notebook' is good. It's got Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling.
'Source Code' is pretty great too. MIND****ING movie.

Memento's the kind of movie that gets better with repeated viewings. Things start making a little more sense. At least that's how it was for me.
I'm a fan of Christopher Nolan movies, so I'd also recommend The Prestige.
Watch Eraserhead. It's a really good action movie.
Anyway, how about you watch a review of an action movie? http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/indiana-jones-and-the-kingdom-of-the-crystal-skull/

Any Tarantino film. Don't forget Jackie Brown. The more time that passes, the more it seems people overlook that particular film.

The one that sticks out is Prisoners. And its certainly a thriller and mystery so it fits your genres of choice.

I like horror movies too. I like watching them late at night with all the lights turned off. And when the movie is over I always hear strange noises and get lightweight paranoid. :oldlol:

Prisoners

I just finished watching Prisoners and I thought it was a very good movie. It was a thriller with the right amount of mystery to keep you craving for more. This is exactly what I like, but it was disturbing as fvck. OMG, now I know why this movie was mentioned in that depressing movie thread. There's almost too much digest.

Somehow in 1 post, you have managed to mention 2 movies that have angered me by having (IMO) decent first halves and horribly bad 2nd halves. Not often have I found such disparity in quality from 1 half to the next as I did with those 2 movies.

Like I told Draz in the other thread when he was asking for horror movies...
Watch Cabin In The Woods, one of the smartest movies with horror elements I've ever seen. You'll really enjoy
Insidious was purposely campy in the second half, though. What's your beef with 1408?
If you want to talk about bad last acts, look no further than Sunshine and 28 Days Later, conveniently made by the same man. :biggums:
Well, I guess Insidious purposely made the 2nd half shitty then :D
Seriously though, it went from genuinely creepy to a bad (campy if you insist) Poltergeist rip off. The final act just did not fit to me with the rest of the movie.
As for 1408, (spoiler in white) the worst part about it was the fake ending. It dragged on way too long for an obvious fake ending. I can't remember the actual length, but if felt like there was about 20 minutes where they tried to make it seem like he was out of the room when it was obvious he was still in it. Maybe if somebody fell for it then it could be effective, but I didn't buy it which made me feel like the director assumed that his audience is stupid and it just felt like a giant waste of time in the middle of the movie. Those 20 minutes or however long they were just needed to be edited completely out of the movie. It has been way too many years since I've seen the movie, but I feel there was something else in the second half that I hated (the end?) but the part in white is what really stayed in my memory as the primary reason I thought the 2nd half ruined the movie.
(if my post is quoted, erase the white text as to not reveal the text for somebody who chooses to watch the movie)
There are like 20 alternate endings to that film. People complain about every single one. I always find that amusing.
I can't remember it all, but I believe (check white): the one where they are on the beach and life seems all perfect. That is the one I remember dragging on forever. I probably hated the other false endings but I don't remember them.

Cabin in the Woods is more comedy than horror.
There are more than enough horror elements to classify it as a horror movie, despite the tongue and cheek nature of some of the plot.

Why only '90s and up? You're really limiting yourself. Hitchcock was a master at suspense, mystery, thriller type films. Here's a list from the '90s and up that haven't been listed yet:
Misery
The Game
Leon: The Professional
Blood Diamond
Traffic
American Psycho
V for Vendetta
Collateral
Syriana
The Sixth Sense
Narc
True Romance
L.A. Confidential
The Fugitive
Boiler Room
The Illusionist
Fargo
The Town
Gone Baby Gone
The Butterfly Effect (a number of people don't care for it, though)
The Machinist
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Insomnia (the original Norwegian version is supposed to be a little bit better)
One Hour Photo
Donnie Brasco
Primal Fear
Barton Fink
Cape Fear (the original is better)
Se7en
No Country for Old Men
The Silence of the Lambs
Se7en, No Country for Old Men, and The Silence of the Lambs are the best of the bunch. Also, check out all of the Bourne movies if you haven't done so.
