GRINNELL, Iowa -- Jack Taylor renewed his membership in the Century Club.
Taylor scored 109 points for Division III Grinnell College on Sunday, shooting 24-for-48 on 3-pointers in a 173-123 win over Crossroads. He poured in 53 during the first nine minutes of the second half.
The 5-foot-10 guard from Black River Falls, Wis., set an NCAA record for any level by scoring 138 points last Nov. 20 in a 179-104 win over Faith Baptist Bible College.
The only other player to score more than 109 in an NCAA game was Rio Grande's Clarence "Bevo" Francis, who had 113 against Hillsdale in 1954.
Against Crossroads College, in Rochester, Minn., Taylor was 35 of 70 overall from the field while playing only 29 minutes. He made 15 of 17 foul shots.
"Just like last year, I couldn't have done this without my teammates," Taylor said. "I give so much credit to them. This truly was a team effort. I'm thankful for the program and the people I have playing with me."
Taylor scored 71 points in the Pioneers' 144-99 victory Friday in the season opener against Finlandia.
I just don't understand how you can get that hot.

Look up his college team and youtube, they take the first shot they get every time down the court and they just swarm on defence. This is the team that also sets out to break specific scoring records.
I saw an article about him a couple of days ago and about how he got injured last year and wanted to prove he can score 100 again. Good for him I guess.

He just shoots open shots without running back on defense at all. You just need a good arm stamina.

You can't even really call what they do basketball. It's a system they run, they pick out the worse teams in the league and then pull this on them to see how much he can score.

their system really is crazy, there's a reason the other teams score so much against them too. They swarm on d and then just pass to one person who shoots no matter what on offence in as short a time as possible, they try to break certain records. This kids a good shooter but other than that he doesn't really play actual basketball.

Damn lol. What a ridiculous way to play basketball. The guy put up 70 shots in 29 minutes of play.

they sub in a new 5 every few minutes or something crazy too so they stay fresh, they leave players back waiting at the 3point line and don't mind giving up a 2 on the other end just to lob back for a 3. Crazy system. There was a bunch of articles around when he scored the 138 or whatever last time

It's 3rd division, they play for fun.
You would have never heard of Taylor or the team if it wasn't for this particular system.

I guess. I'd be just fine with never hearing about him or the team though. I don't care what level you're playing at, if your main goal is to break records rather than win(although they seem to do that quite handily), I can't respect that.

It's about on par with Euroleague level talent/competition. So this kid would theoretically be dropping 100pts on Euroleague teams.

Nobody goes there to be developed into pro material.
The main goal for the coach there is for his team to have fun and enjoy playing basketball while they go to school there. So he came up with a system that ensures everybody will play and score baskets, even 15 guys. They get a chance to break records most people thought would never be broken, I bet that's a pretty cool experience for a random guy playing 3rd division.

Slow down there... you're giving the Euroleague too much credit, my high school varsity basketball team could blow out the best of them.

It varies. Obviously you'll have some awful players but there's also a fair amount of pros that come out of D3 and work their way into solid and lucrative professional careers.
One particular example that comes to mind is Andy Panko.
He played D3 for 4 years and worked his way up through Europe. He was the Spanish League MVP in 2012 and has played in Euroleague.

I realize this but I guess I just love the sport too much to respect that. I've played very, very low levels of basketball and I would feel disrespected as f*ck if people were going out there trying to get in the record books against me/my team while we're playing the game to win. Taking shots within 2-3 seconds of getting the ball, etc. and I definitely would not choose to play for a team like that.
Good for him and the team getting their records, but I don't like it. Just me.

Guys like Teodosic and Diamantidis would be able to be stars in DIII but not get close to scoring 100, DIII is about half a tier above Euroleague competition IMO

Real Talk: Orlando wouldn't win the Euroleague w/ their current roster. Final 4 at BEST.

D1 - 325 teams
D2 - 265 teams
D3 - 325 teams
NAIA - 259 teams
This doesn't include technical colleges, MANY of which would club this team.
Naia member schools are scholarship eligible so they are definitively higher than D3 schools. Period.
There is a 65 team D3 tourney almost identical to D1 March Madness. Not only has this team not made the tournament, but only once in the last 6 years has any team in the conference made the tourney (losing in the first round). Never once during Jack Taylor's tenure has this team been in the top 2 in the conference and hey have not won a single conference tourney game.
The game he scored 138 was not even against another D3 team. It was an UNAFFILIATED team, which would essentially be a club and not one of the 1159 organized university programs. Crossroads College appears to be the same thing. Crossroads College is the new name for Minnesota Bible School and has 174 students, so probably ~90 guys go to school there.
Look, there are plenty of impressive D3 teams and players. This isn't one of either. All these games are against teams that don't have coaches and aren't even real organized basketball. It certainly isn't one of the best 1000 college programs in the US and I would bet there are hundreds of intramural teams that would beat Grinnell. Thousands would beat Minnesota Bible School and anyone that would put teams like this on the schedule to break records against is an embarrassment. If it doesn't happen against an organized team it didn't happen.

If a team was chucking 3's early in the shot clock against my team when they were up 50 points, many elbows would be thrown. Jack Taylor would never score 100 points against my team.

Looks like a legit game to me. Don't matter what kind of defense is being played, you gotta get mad hot to score 138.

Good for Jack Taylor, but I'm not all that impressed. 24/48 from the 3? College 3 pt line is short, too. It's like taking a relatively long 2pter.
