Grizzlies-Clippers Preview

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO

The Los Angeles Clippers won their first division title last season, but further celebrations ended immediately at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies.
The high-scoring Clippers have a chance to exact a measure of revenge Monday night when they face the Grizzlies for the first time since being ousted in the opening round of the playoffs.
Los Angeles (7-3) set a franchise record with 56 wins and eased to a Pacific Division championship by nine games over second-place Golden State. The Clippers also appeared on their way to advancing in the playoffs after winning the first two games against Memphis, but went on to lose the next four.
A right ankle injury to Blake Griffin played a part in the postseason exit, while the Grizzlies reached the Western Conference finals.
The injury limited the All-Star forward to 13 total points over the last two games of the series, including nine in 13:56 off the bench in a 118-105 loss in Game 6.
Griffin continues to be a force for the Clippers, averaging a team-leading 22.9 points this season. His impact is felt beyond the scoreboard, as he's tied for fourth in the league with 10.4 rebounds per game over his first four seasons.
That's reason enough for Los Angeles to be concerned when he hurt his left ankle in Saturday's 110-103 win over Brooklyn. Griffin left the game in the third quarter, but returned 2 1/2 minutes later to finish with 30 points and 12 boards.
"I just came down normal and felt something in the back of my ankle," he said. "It scared me not knowing exactly what it was. It's better than it was but not normal. I can put full weight on it without unbearable pain."
While Griffin should be ready to face Memphis (5-5), star guard Chris Paul isn't prepared to be without him.
"I need him like none other," said Paul, who had 12 points, 13 assists - six to Griffin - and seven rebounds against the Nets.
Paul averaged 22.8 points and 6.3 assists against the Grizzlies in last season's playoffs, but he was ejected late in Game 6 for crashing into Marc Gasol on a missed free throw.
Griffin also found himself in trouble with officials, wrestling Zach Randolph to the court after a basket in Game 6 to earn the fourth double-foul of the series for the duo.
They'll likely find themselves contending under the basket again, as the Clippers attempt to improve to 6-0 at home for the first time since 2006-07.
Randolph, though, has totaled 50 points and 21 rebounds and shot 20 of 30 from the floor to help Memphis win the first two of this four-game road trip - its first back-to-back victories this season.
He scored 22 on 9-of-12 shooting in Sunday's 97-86 win at Sacramento.
"Zach is playing well right now," said guard Mike Conley, who had 19 points and nine assists against the Kings. "When he's got it going like that and is in a zone, we try to get him the ball."
That certainly was the case in the playoffs against the Clippers. Randolph averaged 24.8 points on 57.4 percent from the field over the final four games after totaling 26 points in the first two.
Randolph and Conley each had 23 points in Game 6.
This time, however, Griffin and Paul may have some help from J.J. Redick, who is averaging 18.2 points at home. He had 26 on 9 of 14 from the field - 5 of 7 from behind the arc - against the Nets.

Always a good game. Memphis is getting long in the tooth and hasn't improved. But these teams hate each other. Plus everyone is healthy which is good.

These games are always chippy. It's going to be interesting to see if Griffin will get bullied around by Randolph, or as Griffin promised, he wouldn't be soft this season.

No they don't. Ralph Lawler is very objective. Mike Smith is at times a homer, but not enough to detract from the game. You don't watch enough Clipper games apparently.

qrich
11-19-2013, 02:16 AM
Clippers have the same issue with Doc that they had with Vinny, and that is starting out games, and quarters, lethargically. Basically, every single game, to this point, the Clippers have been playing from behind and that can not continue. It is an issue that can be fixed, rather easily, but how long it has been lingering is worrisome.

Jordan was real solid tonight with 8 points, 16 boards and 3 blocks. Four key late points and three rebounds gave the Clippers a glimmer of hope. 18/9/11 with only two giveaways for Paul was real solid as well as the 23/11 for Biff.

But when your starting guards and center, along with backup three and two guard combine for a meager 17-52, you aren't going to win very many games. Only nine fast break points, against a grind it out squad, just won't cut it either.

All in all, was a good performance, just need a few tweaks and Paul/Redick/Crawford/Barnes aren't all going to be off in the same game very often.

Absolutely. I'm not blaming Doc in the slightest, just pointing out my frustration with how little effort is being put into starting the game.

And those two key late missed free throws really helped too.

Not sure if you meant that DJ missed since he was 2-2, iirc, or the Memphis misses, but if its the latter, definitely agree.

Jordan just needed to be in much sooner. His energy to grab boards was vital and could have made a bigger difference. He still has ways to go to become an elite defensive center, but he is definitely climbing towards that area.

If he wasn't a good free throw shooter, absolutely. Otherwise, why give the opposition more time in such a close game when you can knock off 2-5 more seconds and still get to the line?

From his time with the Clippers, and the majority of times I have seen him, ZBo is real solid in the clutch from the line, and I'm definitely sure, percentage wise, he is in the high 80s.

I just think time is more vital with a trip to the line for a 80% guy from the line is better than four seconds.

Even if he is an 80% shooter in the clutch that's still only a 64% chance of getting 2 points. A layup is like a 99% chance. Not worth 2-3 seconds to risk it imo.

No but you play the odds. In this case the lay up is essentially a 100% sure thing the fts is the risk.

Which I'm well aware of.

But Z-Bo is solid in the clutch, and I would personally prefer one of my clutchest players to be at the line, shooting two and an additional 2-5 seconds to be burned off the clock.

Clips should have never let Reggie Evans go. he was the key to stopping Z-Bo

Think they should have went for Brand this summer over Mullens, Jamison and Hollins. Evans can be reacquired with ease, imo.

I guess you're right. I'll never question your logic again, since according to your logic, the Clippers win every game.

Nice reach.

You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later

What's Ivan Johnson doing? I'm sure they could use that guy he's a bull with a tough attitude and could really help them.

If I remember correctly, they couldn't offer him anymore than vet min because of salary reasons. Clippers knew they couldn't resign him because of how well he performed during playoffs so they helped him do a Sign and trade to Nets.

Clippers bench is horrible. On top of that Redick, Crawford, and Dudley were off. Paul and Griffin can't do everything. DJ rebounded well. But it seemed like every time the bench came in Memphis just scored in bunches and went ahead. They dug a hole too deep.
