The avatars take up bandwidth on the forum. So, when there's a lot of games or some really intense moments concluding from a game and there are a lot of posters trying to login and post at the same time... so the avatars go away to compensate for the traffic coming to the forum.

As for the most recent holdover ? No idea. Probably Jeff or Steve were testing something and had to take the avatars away for a while.

A couple of other examples I've seen is that when there's a lot of traffic (usually playoff time), people who don't have insidehoops accounts will not be able to view the board/threads. If you have an account, you can log in, but it will be very slow depending on the situation.

Maximizing the size ? Probably Jeff has control over that, like Beatlezz earlier mentioned.

You need to get the right size (the most the picture will allow) to make the avatar look big. Right now, that avy is too big when you tried to upload it, so it appears small. If you get the exact size, it will appear bigger, even a smaller sized one will appear bigger.
