While has Steve Nash battled back pain for the last couple weeks, it appears that it's getting worse. Those around the game were starting to wonder if this was a career-ending injury, but the Lakers and Nash himself dismissed those thoughts.

But now, there are reports that Nash is taking that idea a little more seriously:

@PeterVecsey1

I'm hearing Nash's pain is forcing him 2 seriously consider calling it a career. He'd still get $ this yr & next & LA'd get cap relief next year

The injury, pain caused by nerve damage in his back, is causing Nash serious pain. He was scheduled to take a two week break from game action, but it appears that treatment isn't solving the problem as quickly as they would like.

Nash was averaging 6.7 points and 4.8 assists in six games this year.

It would help the Lakers but... but... its Nash :(

Of course he'll get paid. I was thinking there is NO WAY he would retire because Nash is all about the money.

How can he get paid and LA get cap relief? Medical retirement? That's probably the only way I see. Otherwise, LA gets no cap space if Nash still gets paid.

nba contracts are awesome... retire and still get paid!

someone should go sign a $100m contract and then retire the day afterwards.

oh wait, that already happened... well, sorta, kinda, almost.

If a player retires for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing, then the player does not count against the cap.

You guys realize that this is based on a single tweet for the source right? And it is just a guy saying what he thinks he heard.

It isn't really an age related issue. If Kobe comes back and struggles no one is going to proclaim he should retire. Did people say Derrick Rose should just hang it up? I mean what is the difference? Nash takes better care of himself then those guys. Rose won't even be around at Nash's age. Nash broke his leg a year ago and is suffering from pain. Isn't that to be expected out of a player at any age when it causes nerve damage?

Riiiight.... dude, injuries pile up with age, and it takes longer to heal.

Back issues, leg issues, etc, etc.

You think Nash would be "seriously considering retirement" at age 21? ...

Lets be realistic.

We're not talking about a young person recovering from a major injury, like Rose last season or Griffin in his rookie season.

He should have never gone to the Lakers.

I hope he doesn't retire yet. I think he could still win if the Lakers sign some worthwhile players in the summer of 2014. Who cares if he has to ride the bench for it to happen? My childhood will officially end when either Kobe or Nash retire. And I can't allow that to happen yet!

True; but I'm pretty sure the rules require that player to go an entire season without playing prior to the team receiving that relieve. Here's what Larry Coon's site says

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player is no longer playing or has retired.

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is excluded from team salary. This is when a player suffers a career-ending injury or illness. The team must waive the player, and can apply for this salary exclusion beginning:

- If the player played 10 or more games in the current season, on the one-year anniversary of the player's last game.
- If the player played fewer than 10 games in the current season, 60 days after his last game, or the one-year anniversary of his last game in the previous season, whichever is later.

If he went to miami instead of LA, he could've had his deserved ring.

Such a shame.

Most players love the game too much to retire. They all try to get back in the league as long as they think they're still able to play/compete, even if they have a huge contract still paying them out.

Nash could have played in the league for another decade if he stayed with the Suns. :ohwell:

You don't know this. Miami won by such a small margin during the Finals that anything could have changed the outcome.

Come off the bench for a team that are chasing for a ring. Minimal minutes. One more shot man.

Lakers won't miss him if Blake keeps playing like John Stockton out there

This gives LA more freedom to make a move this summer if anything

Couldn't get Nash waived and sign with the Spurs to ride the pine on his way to a title this season? (like Tmac did last season)

It's a complementary for him.

His career doesn't deserve the label (0 rings).

Amazing that 2 of the best ever PGs to play the game doesn't have rings, Nash and Stockton.

He should've done this after like the 2011, or 2012 season. He's like 2 - 3 years late joining the party we have that we all like to call reality. He's been atrocious this year, wasn't much better last year either. It's been a surprising career. Ride into the sunset rubbing your nipples Steve.
