I was thinking, I'm not sure if I could think of a definitive best-in-franchise-history dunk for the Detroit Pistons. Grant Hill on Zo came to mind, but that's about where I stand right now.

Rockets: McGrady on Bradley? Olajuwon had some vicious putbacks in his younger days. And Francis had so many great ones. But that McGrady one was probably the most memorable.

As far as Kobe goes, I think the dunk he had against Denver where he switched hands behind his back and went 180 for the right hand finish is one of the most incredible plays I've ever seen.

Wade's dunk on Varejao easily. Its an all time great dunk.

Wade's on Jermaine was nice in terms of Heat history and Wade announcing himself to the league, but it doesn't come close to the Varejao one.

Another few that got me out of my seat was Lebron on Terry, and Wade on Perkins, while proceeding to do the stirring pot dance after.

I remember those two.

Poor Brandon Knight. Props for him for attempting to contest, but Brandon Knight season died that day. I think he went on a bunch of unlucky streak. He got crossed over too.

And the Vince Carter one on Mourning was sick. Mourning was blocking every single shot that year it seemed, and Vince Carter wasn't having none of that. I think that game Carter outplayed Wade as well.

I love that Carter dunk on Zo.

Two things stand out to me:

1) Stylistically, it's one of the best looking posters I have ever seen. Everything from the build up of the loose ball to impact at the rim. It essentially became what people do at parks where you have a shot blocker and a dunker. The two meet with one trying to get the poster and the other trying to get the block/force a miss. I don't know what the name of that game is, but I'm sure there is one. As you can see in the video, when Carter makes his drive, everyone other than Carter and Zo clear out making it a 1v1 play.

Then Zo and Carter time their jumps perfectly, and it looks to me like Zo might have forced a miss if Carter didn't meet with Zo's chest sideways. I believe that's an important factor to consider when observing the quality of a poster. Really, how good of a dunk is it if the defender has zero chance of defending said dunk?

Added on is the unusually prolonged "poster moment" where both players are at the apex of their jumps (and this one so happens to coincide perfectly). Most dunks are bang-bang, but this dunk literally gave you about half a second to get the perfect picture, or poster, right before the actual dunk occurs. There's a frozen moment in time, if you will.

Lastly, the two qualities I always favor in a poster: One, a wing (Carter being in that perfect 6'4-6'7 range) versus a big man; a prominent shot blocking big, nonetheless. And secondly, it's done in front of the dunker's bench. My only gripe was the initial Miami crowd reaction, or lack thereof.

2) This further confirms why Vince Carter is the GOAT dunker for me.

Ignoring, though not overlooking, his aesthetically pleasing movements and the natural combination of power and grace... Carter grabs a loose ball, gathers himself, takes one dribble in a halfcourt set, and still explodes enough to catch one of the best shot blockers in the game, playing as good defense as he could have in that situation. All of that happens in the matter of 2-3 seconds. Many of these so-called posters are of players either running at a full out sprint or dunking on players with no ability to defend the shot.

I believe what most considered the three best posters from last year (DJ on Knight, Barnes on Pek, & LeBron on Terry) all fit one or both of those unseemly qualities. Don't misunderstand me, I'm a fan of those three dunks. But Carter on Zo is a poster dunk at it's purest form, imo.
