Beasley NCAA: 26 ppg 53 FG% 12 RBD 1.3 STL 1.6 BLK

Rose NCAA: 15 PPG 48 FG% 4.5 RBD 4.7 AST 1.2 STL

Beasley was also younger by a year

It was a serious debate, tbh I think the only reason why Beasley went #2 was because he didn't have a definite position in the NBA

no pun intended

Cause Chicago loves their natives.

Lebron23

Remember criticizing the Bulls when Beasley wasn't picked first.

Also myself included calling him a bust because he played like shit in the summer league/preseason.

by calendar year but D Rose's bday is October 1988 and Beasley's is in January 1989. All of 3 months older than Rose beasley was.

besides this I agree...Beasley had one of the best Freshman season for any player in college ball history.

For the same reason Wiggins will go above Parker. For the same reason Dion Jordan went above Jarvis Jones. Same reason Bridgewater will go above Manziel.

The NBA draft isn't about what you do in college. It's a COMPLETELY different game. They factor it in, but it's more about how you project. Derrick Rose clearly was an NBA talent. Beasley wasn't quite there.

After Rose led his team to the biggest choke in NCAA history, Chicago couldn't pass him up.

11-19-2013, 05:09 PM
The real question is: Which would you draft first, going by THIS SEASON alone ?

Another interesting one: Which player would you rather be as of right now?

Beasley's future looks quite bright atm.

In addition to other answers given, college performance does not always equal NBA performance. Exhibit A: Adam Morrison.

If the Heat won the lottery that year, would they have picked Rose?

Given that we had Udonis Haslem at PF while our later pick Mario Chalmers essentially started for us at PG, I would imagine yes. But then 2010 most likely would not have happened as Wade and Rose would have done some work in those two years.

This is the right answer. Beasley/Rose debate wasn't even close until teams realized that Beasley didn't have a concrete NBA position.

Chicago lucked out and took the hometown kid.

Chicago would've alienated their fans by not taking the home town, golden boy. Besides that he was the better player, better leader, and clearly had superior intangibles. As he's proved in the league. Beasley is a mentally weak, tweener that just hasn't clicked in the NBA the way it did for him in college when the athletic, and competition playing field isn't as level.

Bulls owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, interviewed both players before the draft.

He asked them what did they hated most about college basketball.

Beasley answered, "the refs". Derrick Rose, "losing".

Think about that, if maybe chicago had picked beasley and heat rose, miami would not be a team that bad, and maybe the decision would never had happened. Lebron should thank chicago for getting rose, or otherwise he would still be ringless.

I don't think Beasley interviewed very well.

Will be interesting if Beasley's improvement continues, and he gets his career back on track in Miami (and with Rose free-falling), whether the story could be turned around and Beasley end up the better player for the rest of their careers :lol

By this logic Jimmer Fredette would have had more #1 pick hype than Lew Alcindor and Lebron James combined

From what I remember at the time, it was Rose's NCAA finals run that got him the attention. He wasn't a lock for the number 2 pick either at the time.

I also remember something along the lines of Wade being asked who the Heat would take, and he responded with "I don't know yet, but that Rose kid is playing a heck of a tournament"... After that I remember ESPN running with an article stating Rose could possibly be the number 1 guy.

They're just stats. Rose played a harder schedule in a bigger division. He had legit size and ability for his position while Beasley is still considered a tweener to this day. And Rose clearly had a higher ceiling.

there were plenty of questions regarding beasleys mentality at the time

i remember hearing reports that riley was trying to trade the pick, or considering taking mayo instead of beasley. it sounded like he really didnt want him, but with the stats he put up at k state, it was just too hard to pass on superbeas.

rose played in conference usa, while beas played in the big 12. conference usa is a cake walk for memphis every year, while the big 12 produced the national champion, kansas in 08

so beasleys conference was definitely harder

It was close and still is.

It's because by position Rose was head and shoulders athletically and size wise above his competition. He posted better combine numbers, speed, strength, ball handling, and poise. For a point gaurd in a pointgaurd driven league you do not pass that up.

For Beas they found out he wasn't the 6'10- 6'11 foot guy he was being passed off as. He turned out to be 6'7"-8"ish. Which effectively puts him as a jumpshooting PF or a slow SF. Unless he panned out athletically and ball-handling wise he would never slide over to SF. If he didn't bulk up he wouldn't be a PF, etc. Also I believe he bombed every team interview.

Personally I believe that if he went to a better situation for him, he'd have been more motivated. Instead they relegated him to the bench behind Haslem and Jones and Jermaine oneal :facepalm , and had him spot up off Wade, etc. He was putting up similar stats to Rose his rookie year but played in half the time.

He wasn't given free reign to just play 35min+ and mess up like Rose, Evans, Lillard, Durant, Irving.

fwiw, i dont think interviews are as important as background checks

people were talking about beasley's immaturity far before GMs interviewed him.

I don't think Beasley interviewed very well.

They asked him how high he thinks he should go...and Beasley said I can get very high.
