Documentary? Hoop Dreams.
Fictional Movie? Unfortunately, basketball movies almost always suck. Why can't they make a good basketball movie like they have with other sports? Baseball has some GREAT movies. The Natural, Field of Dreams, etc. Boxing has Raging Bull, Rocky. Hell...hockey has the Might Ducks.
Basketball? We have...

White Men Can't Jump is...aight. It's entertaining though.
I think the most impressive thing about that movie is that, supposedly, Wesley Snipes had very little, if any, basketball experience prior to making that movie.
Woody Harrelson played some college ball.

The ATR soundtrack was great. I'd give the nod to Hoosiers as a better all-around movie, though.
Meanwhile, Hoop Dreams is amongst the greatest documentaries of all-time.
no pun intended

Hoosiers
Hoop Dreams (documentary)
White Men Can't Jump
Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault (TV movie)
With those 4 you're all set up. Hoosiers is a really good movie, Hoop Dreams a flat-out great documentary, WMCJ is really entertaining and pretty solid, Rebound a pretty good TV movie, Cheadle is too short to play Earl but he pulled it off and much larger stretches have happened.
Then you also got He Got Game and Above the Rim, both solid movies, Coach Carter too. One on One is cool, The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend also. Finding Forrester and The Basketball Diaries don't involve as much of actual basketball playing but are good movies. Semi-pro has some funny scenes. Space Jam is cool for kids.

Hoop Dreams was a documentary but it set the standard of great film making involving protagonist/subjects as basketball players.
Any other movies seemed bland compared to Hoops dreams. Of course I haven't seen some of the movies listed on this thread.

Hoop Dreams. Great documentary dealing with basketball that touches on many social issues.
He Got Game is up there.
I liked the game action in Blue Chips. Such great talent on there so the basketball scenes were terrific. I remember watching it right after Above the Rim and it was a hilarious contrast in terms of the basketball scenes.

I love the father / son legacy story of He Got Game.
I know, but keep it real though. Ray Allen is a really bad actor. Yeah, I said it and you all know its true.
Anyway, the obvious answer is Teenwolf. Clearly the best basketball movie.

Ray's acting didn't kill the movie for me. Teen Wolf is an awesome movie even thought the subtext and stereotypes are quite clearly racist. Love Michael J Fox though.

No the wolf is quite clearly a metaphor for the black athlete. He becomes insanely athletic, aggressive, "cool", white girls just want to bang him not date him, all of a sudden he's a great dancer. And his ego inflates, thinks he's bigger than the team and becomes insanely selfish in the process. Plain old white bread, team first Michael J Fox wins them the game. 80s Hollywood racism at its finest. It was released at the peak of the whites / Bird vs blacks/ Magic basketball wars of the 80s. It great social commentary in subtext.

What I never understood about that film was that "bad guy's" girlfriend. She was working both of them and they both didn't even care all that much. How could they not see how much of a vapid POS she was?

Meh. I could just as easily make the argument that the werewolf is a metaphor for steroids.
I liked Hoosiers...
One not mentioned, and not a basketball movie per se but has a basketball theme is "Amazing Grace and Chuck" starring Alex English as Amazing Grace.. OK movie, a bit dated a bit cliche but a decent watch

You could but you'd be ignoring:
The swag / cool personality change
The dancing
The blacks on blondes subtext
The selfish black athlete perception
The excessive show boating
it's social commentary on race in sports dude
Meh, haven't seen it in a long time but....
Why does personality change have to be a black thing? People who suddenly become successful generally do gain confidence and become "cool" in the eyes of others. The same thing happens to Mark Wahlberg in that rock star movie. Pretty sure it's not because he's black. It's pretty universal.
Remember, this movie is from 1985. Don't apply today's sensibilities. If anything, his "swag" () is more along the lines of a Pistol Pete than anything else.
Did they ever specifically say he was a bad dancer before becoming a wolf?
What black on blonde subtext? He's not black. What, there can't be ANY blonde people? The "hot girl" role has pretty consistently portrayed as the stereotypical blonde haired blue eyed woman. Across the board. There is nothing about that that is exclusive to blacks. Suzanne Summers was a pretty famous hot blonde at the time too. I don't remember any blacks on threes company.
That's just way it has typically been. Hot popular girl role = blonde. Modest girl next door = brunette. You could just as easily claim this represents the old nazi claim of Northern Europeans being superior to Southern European. No less of a stretch.
Selfishness and show boating aren't exclusive to blacks either. That's in literally every sports movie.
Selfishness and show boating = poor sportsmanship. Yeah, it's a sports movie. That's a pretty standard moral. Don't be a douche and be a team player.
I think you're looking to deeply. You can find most of the same themes in teen wolf in mean girls which isn't even sports and the main character isn't black or any sports movie for that matter.
Teen wolf is not unique. It's been done many times in sports movies. You're a loser but then you gain powers. With your new powers, you become a douche. After realizing what a douche you are, you apologize to the team and become a good ol' team player. Standard stuff.

Because she represents selfish, agenda driven gold diggers. People forgive her cause she's hot. Has status. She's out for herself. A jock sniffer. The one who really loves him is Boof. The good girl. But apparently I'm reaching, or maybe some of you aren't smart enough to read between the lines. Not everything is spoon fed to audiences in the superficial plot of the movie.
I know what she represents and her character is obvious and stereotypical in these kind of films. What I don't understand is why I'm supposed to be sympathetic to either of the two when they're so naive.
Also, everyone randomly turning on some dude who defends himself after being verbally and physically harassed?
