View Full Version : Players getting paid "under the table?"

I know it's been rumored before, but are there any examples with some evidence that players are taking pay cuts to appease the salary totals, while being paid under the table as compensation?

I remember reading somewhere that Haslem has been taking pay cuts in Miami for years now but Arison "takes care of him."

This. It's so blatantly obvious.

It helps to (likely) have bank accounts in 2 different countries.

Wouldn't surprise me. I'd do it if I were an owner. It's my money and I can do what I want with it. Call it charity with an automatic writeoff/tax refund.

You're ridiculous if you think this.

Although, isn't there some tradition with the Laker greats getting shares or something?

Eh, Lebron, his family, his crew, all got comped pretty much anything they wanted at least while he was in Cleveland. Courtside tickets to away games, travel, meals, etc. I get that that's not at the same level as AK47 but i'm sure sh*t like that happens all the time.

But then he un-retired and had to give it back because owners can't be players. Then he retired again and got his 5% back, then he sold it again a couple years ago and bought a share of the Dodgers.

The only proven case is Joe Smith in Minnie. They were punished severely.

edit: We could consider JR Smith's brother getting signed an example of this.

wouldn't be surprised if some entity falling under the Big Three (individually) are gaining shares in Carnival Cruise Lines...it happens a lot, and definitely off-shore accounts too

I don't think it's "under the table" unless the player has a lot of genuine love and trust for the owner. Because say a player does agree, and the owner says oops, can't do it after the ink has dried on the contract? or a year later? The player has no recourse because if he rats he loses the contract he signed

The Joe Smith thing is more likely. Sign a guy for less, and three years later when you have his bird rights sign him to a fat deal. Thats illegal because the first contract is predicated on the second, fatter contract.

This. It's so blatantly obvious.

To anyone who knew his situation, it blatantly isn't, which you should know since your team was involved.
