All athletes worldwide, ages 35 and under, from all sports, from all countries were considered.
This is the inaugural award. The first ever time the award is officially given, for all athletes, from all sports, from all countries. From now on, every year, the Vatican will choose the world athlete of the year, whom will be honored at the Vatican.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Vatican.
Vassilis Spanoulis won the inaugural award, for the year 2013.
It was also announced that the official press conference will take place on November 28th, 2013. I will provide video of the press conference when it happens. It should be available in both Italian and Greek.
I would have posted this in the original thread on this topic, but as usual, some jerk water mod deleted the original thread.

Sources also say initially LeBron James was chosen as the winner but reportedly said that the award was "not worth his time" so it was given to Spanoulis.

Believe it or not, there is a world outside of just the USA. Even though Americans don't realize it.

I bet if i went to an euroleague forum and did a poll about who the best athlete in 2013 is, even they would not say Spanoulis.

After a lengthy buy-out process, the Houston Rockets finally brought "Euro Kobe" to the league in 2006. Euro Kobe? Shows how crap the European leagues are then. He initially made Jeff Van Gundy's rotation, but quickly had a falling out with the coach, who criticized his turnovers and poor outside shooting. Van Gundy even unleashed this gem of a quote: "(Spanoulis) says, 'I was [Tracy] McGrady back home.' Great. McGrady is McGrady here." After one season and 32 games played, Spanoulis fled back to Europe.

In the NBA, PER 36 minutes:
11 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 turnovers shooting only 42%.
More turnovers than assists too. Love how bad this scrub is.

Awards with ambiguous names are always legit.
Larry O Brien Trophy, Bill Russell Trophy, etc. - obviously not legit awards, since the official name of the awards is ambiguous. Of course you clowns would not even know that the media never uses the official names of the awards.
The level of idiocy in this thread is ludicrous.
Amazing how simply using the official name of an award and putting someone's name on it, automatically made it meaningless according to the geniuses in this thread.

Lionel Messi: I know i didn't have my best season, but even if i did im not sure i would have deserved it over the great basketball player Spanoulis.
Usain Bolt: When i watch him i feel like i can run even faster. He is such a good motivator.
Novak Djokovic: When i started getting into sports i liked basketball the most, but when i saw Spanoulis playing i knew that i would have no chance of being the best basketball player so i decided to start playing tennis. Not a bad decision huh?!
Lebron James: I had a great season, won my second nba title, but this very prestigious award belongs to only one man- Spanoulis. After Mr. Spanoulis lead his nation to a win against the USA in 2006 he told me: 'Dont worry kid, one day you will be good'. I will never forget those words and i believe he is the reason for my success today.
