View Full Version : Do you sit properly while on computer?

andgar923

For years I was hunched on my couch as I propped my laptop on a table. My couch was deep so I had to lean forward to use it.

That f*cked up my posture, gave me back aches, neck pains.

I've had an actual desk and desk chair for almost a year now. A 25 inch monitor that's crystal clear.

Yet I still sit leaning forward, hunched up trying to use the computer like a caveman.

How bout you guys?

Oh... post your setup as well... I'll post mine in a bit.

I used to be leaning forward. I actually still find myself doing that. Unless I'm in my bed which I am right now leaning backwards. It's bad.

Yeah, Axiom 49 takes up too much space. It's too big and clunky to have on the desk. The one you see there is the Keystation Mini 32, very compact keyboard that is just enough to do the job (barely).

I use Reason, have tried using Logic, Live, Cubase but I always go back to Reason for it's workflow.

Electric Dance Music...... i don't make it, but I could if I concentrated on it. It can be very technical tho. More time consuming than I have the patience for to be honest.

Did apple start selling furniture?

LOL not mine.

I had a cheap black glass table from Staples that I bought for $65, my sis moved and didn't have space for her desk. It does look like an Apple desk tho.

Unless you are super tall, that set up is probably going to hurt your back. Your monitor is up way too high. You shouldn't have arch your neck back to see your monitor.

Yeah. That's bad.

Here's OSHA's recommendations.

The top of the monitor should be at or slightly below eye level. The center of the computer monitor should normally be located 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level

I'm guessing you're young and your body is still forgiving of issues like this, but it will catch up to you.

It's a Herman Miller Caper XR. Think they're discontinued. They might still sell the guest version without adjustments and caster wheels.

Guess no audiophiles noticing the most expensive thing in those pics; the McIntosh stack and HPM 100s.

The room is an addition from the 50s (wood paneling) and the only corner in the house my toys are allowed.

*Edit, they brought them back with a new name* (http://store.hermanmiller.com/store/servlet/dynamicKit__10151_-1_10051_8274?utm_source=Google-Product-Search&utm_medium=CSE&utm_term=Caper_Multipurpose_Chair&utm_campaign=Official_Online_Store&device=c&network=g&matchtype=&gclid=CPyCz4ed-7oCFbFxOgodqgwAFA)

I bought mine on Craigslist from a guy in Philly for 90 bucks.

okay, thanks. i need to buy a new chair with better lower-back support, so that was a good prod.

amazon review:

1/5 stars. Not worth it, you are only paying for the brand name

By RadioRoom233 on March 15, 2012

When you pay upwards of $500 for a single chair... it better have a foot rest, or a head rest, or arm padding, or tilt functioning, or cup holders, or ANYTHING. This chair offers none of those options. It is uncomfortable, the arm rests wiggle, and they look cheap despite them being worth more than I pay for rent.

I have had multiple experiences with these chairs. First I went to school at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and being the pretentious art school it is, it ordered these exact Herman Miller chairs for the entire Photography lab and ALL of it's classrooms. I have spent three years, 6 day a week, 8 hours or more a day (transfer student) sitting in these god-forsaken roller chairs. I KNOW these chairs. They are so. so. so. uncomfortable.

Beyond my experience at school, I am also sitting in one of these chairs right now. I am at work at my equally pretentious media company 9-5 job. Our studio ordered these chairs... and my back hurts more and more every day. Why on earth, with all of the crazy cool options available for chairs, would you want to order THIS f*$#ing chair!? It's like it is haunting me... following me everywhere I go. Do yourself a favor and find a chair with some actual lumbar support. Get some butt padding, some arm padding, something that helps you sit for hours at a time. Save your money and buy a Wii, or a bicycle, or Minecraft... anything. But for the love of all that is holy and good, do not buy these boney ass, cheapo, good for nothing brand name chairs. This is America for f*$%#s sake! Your butt and your back will thank you.

Ah yes, I clicked on this thread because of this chair before I got distracted.

This chair forces you to have good posture because it doesn't have a flex net backing like the 800 dollar Aero or Steelcase's Leap. Therefore, if you don't sit properly it will punish your lower back and spine. The plastic backing is sturdy and molded to the curvature of your spine, but if you slouch forward it murders you.

ah... now that you describe it, i remember trying one of those, once. was definitely an odd experience. i'm not sure how well i could train myself to that. but maybe i could buy a used one in this struggling economy as a limited gamble.

in the past, i've also enjoyed one of these backless chairs:

http://images01.olx.com/ui/1/70/33/8206733_1.jpg

my legs used to fall asleep a little bit on it, but on the plus side, it did keep my spine straight as an arrow. i could probably just switch back and forth between my executive chair and one of those. hmm... decisions, decisions.

It keeps your hips in the right position which is very good for your back and it forces you to use your core to stabilize yourself, so you back gets better.

i see reviewers liking it, but also complaining about the hardness and wideness of the seat. is that actually kind of the point? as in, the stance is purposefully encouraged to widen and stay in close contact with seat?

They make a narrower one called the pony saddle. The hardness of it never bothered me. If you're sitting on your sit bones, you should be pretty balanced.
